The SHOCKING Legacy of British Imperialism EXPOSED
Join Sathnam Sanghera on a transformative journey to uncover the hidden truths of British imperialism, a controversial legacy that continues to shape global dynamics and modern society. Inspired by his acclaimed book EmpireWorld, Sanghera confronts the far-reaching consequences of imperialism, emphasizing the critical role of historical accountability, decolonization, and cross-cultural perspectives.
In this powerful exploration, Sanghera delves into the darker aspects of the British Empire’s history, uncovering its enduring impact on social justice, cultural identity, and ethnic narratives. Through a lens of decolonial thought and historical awareness, he provides a nuanced perspective on the empire’s influence on contemporary issues, including race relations, colonial legacies, and the ongoing fight for equity and justice.
This thought-provoking video challenges viewers to rethink their understanding of imperialism, shedding light on often-overlooked stories and fostering crucial conversations about the importance of confronting the past to build a more equitable future. With unflinching honesty, Sanghera highlights the lasting impacts of colonialism, sparking insights into how we can embrace a more inclusive and accurate understanding of history.

Yes, noted. How the 'Telangs' of the Madras army and the Bengalis were deemed a non-martial people, despite the fact that the British essentially conquered India with those two groups.

Sikhs fought the British in 1849, but then supported them in 1857 against the Mughal king in Delhi. William Dalrymple said in one of his books that the reason was that they wanted to get even with the Mughals, who had fought alongside the British in the Sikh Wars. What followed was the closest incident to genocide visited upon the hapless Mughals in Delhi in 1857.

@RamblingsofaSikh the irony of this is that Churchill was critical to sending British Soldiers (including Indian Soldiers) to fight a useless war in Galipoli but later on in his life he says "I hate Indians, they are a beastly people with a beastly religion!" -

Experimenting on Animals and writing about Human behaviour is non digestive to me. Even if one deals with Human on a daily basis especially his/her family members, one knows Nothing about others until They knowThyself. The learning is for everyone at their mental level. That's the reason spiritual teaching puts emphasis on individual growth by taking control of Your Desires- Lust, Anger, Greed, Attachment, Pride. I hope this makes sense.

Great to listen to this episode. Sadly, my Dublin born Gt Gt Grandfather was an HEIC soldier in the 2nd Bombay Regiment of European Infantry from 1854 to 1859 (a cooper by training so good to hear about Indian coopers at Gallipoli). I have an interest in the Singapore Mutiny of Feb 1915 and surprised it didn't get a mention given the poor management of the Indian soldiers in the run up to the mutiny. In Dublin's Croke Park stadium, what is now Hill 16 was orginally referred to as Hill 60, a reference to the fighting in Gallipoli. One of my recent reads was a book on the 1st Bn 89th Punjab Regt who had fought Turks in Egypt in 1915, sent to Gallipoli and then withdrawn because of the idea that they would be fighting Turks.

Because the nation state is the norm now, it's difficult to appreciate that it wasn't Britain that went to war in WW1 and WW2, but the British Empire. A very different animal. When talking about the time around the Battle Of Britain it's commonly said Britain stood alone. In truth that was very far from the case. If you look at Empire outposts like Gibralta, Malta, Cypress, Egypt, Aden, South Africa etc the one thing many have in common is that they were on the route to India. The decisions about them were made in India, not London. At one point early in the war, when Britain was in danger of invasion, tanks were shipped out from Britain to Egypt because protecting that route was so important. There were also contributions from Africa and the Caribbean that are not so well know. For instance, I wonder how many people know there were black Spitfire pilots and bomber crews. Or know about the Caribbean contribution to shipping the oil from Venezuela up to join convoys from North America. Whilst France was occupied, or Vichy, many of the Free French were actually from West Africa, Algeria, and Sengal for instance. Senegalese fought in both wars. Algerians fought in the WW2 Italy campaign.
