How to use the built in Graduated Neutral Density Filters on the OM-1 Mark II
Today I travel back to Hartig Park. My goal was to retake the images of the old barn at 8mm using my Lumix 8-18 lens. I found the barn had collapsed during a recent storm so I had to move to plan B.

The sensor is not half the size its only 26.1%. Thus the advantage of your f5 smulders completely away compared to the full frame. Furthermore the background blur of the f5 on your micro four third is the equivalent of f11.

Nice, straight forward explanation of how to use the GND. Thanks. I recently started using my 40-150 in a similar way, to isolate an image. I find, for me, somewhere around 75mm to 100mm helps me isolate a nuanced image that would be distracted by other elements if I had photographed between 12mm and 25mm.

I have no problems. I find this lens as sharp as my RF 70-200 f2.8. I love this lens and keep it on my camera most of the time unless I am doing something that requires f2.8 or better. Given the ISO performance of an R6 MKII, I see no downside.

certainly with the 1.4 extender, I'm not overly impressed with the Canon 200-800's sharpness (as compared with the larger Canon EF500 f/4 IS ii, also with the same extender, and also on a Canon R5.

I have a Nikon DSLR that I don't use much any more. I do almost everything with my OM-5 now. A couple weeks ago I got tripped up when I tried to switch lenses on the Nikon. I couldn't understand why the lens wouldn't go on. Finally I realized I was trying to turn left to right to put it on, when I should have been turning right to left. I've been using OM Systems for a little over a year. Started with the PEN E-PL 6 (used, originally released mid 2013). Loved it. I bought the OM-5 new. Had never used ND filters or focus stacking. The OM-5 made this so easy to learning and experiment with. Paired with the 12-45 f/4, wonderful. Almost a year later, I take the OM-5 everywhere. Looking forward to trying the OM-1 mkii.

Thanks for sharing. I started with the Em-1 back in 2014. I loved the system but decided to try Canon FF mirrorless in 2020. I enjoyed FF but grew tired of the weight and their direction on lenses. I got an OM-5 to try for travel and video. I really enjoyed it. When I got a chance to try the new OM-1 Mark II I realized that I missed my Micro 4/3rds gear.

I've had my OM-5 for about a year. Love it! And paired with the 12-45 f/4 or 40-150 f/4, amazing. Small and light. I've used the 12mm f/2 for astro, but my favorite fast prime is the 20mm f/1.4. The OM-5 and the 20mm and 12-45 f/4 and the 40-150 f/4 make a great travel pack. All weather-sealed, so wet weather photography is worry free. Perhaps an OM1mkii for Christmas. Unless a surprise OM5 mkii shows up.

Thanks for the video, a nicely balanced opinion. I am in Western Australia and we get a lot of very bright sunlight, so smaller apertures are not such a problem. regarding the 200-800, it is tempting but I have the RF800 f11 with the R8, very rarely feel the need for a shorter focal range, but I do have the EF 100-400 L series mkii for those occasions, plus I have seen a few video’s that say the RF800 gives a sharper image..

Completely agree with everything you say! This was why I bought an OM1-N in 1979 and why I have just bought the new OM-1 Mk2. I was tempted by the OM-5 because it is even more compact and reminds me very much of the original OM1 but, in the end, the extra features of the newest OM-1 won me over. Be prepared, be specific, give people the answers they're looking for right up front. Don't say things like, "I'm not really sure what this is for, let's try it." That's genuine (I appreciate it), but that's not why people will subscribe. If you have the gear, and I don't, I want to know what you think of it from personal experience, not live experimentation. Well, I guess some people are born the just contradict. You could have done this about any other similar lens on the market, Sigma or Tamron150-600mm for example. It is obvious that you haven't even tryed the 200-800mm so why are you talking about it ? I have the 200-800mm and the R6 mkii and I can tell you that even at F9, there is no lighting conditions you can't use this lens. The R6 mkii is simply incredible for managing ISO. I often go over 12,000 ISO whitout any noise and with the help of a good noise reduction software 20,000 is not an issue. You will never ever get close to those results with your kit.

Your thinking, to me at least sounds a bit confusing if you don’t mind me saying so. You’re using a tripod for the cityscape and you’re shooting at F8. The 200 to 800 would give you serious flexibility for your cityscapes mounted on a tripod and shooting even at F9. For 1800 US dollars you get greater flexibility and if you want wider aperture lenses to do the same thing the cost is enormous. I don’t have the lens yet but it’s my intention to buy it and I have viewed the same reviews on you tube you mentioned and the overall message is far more positives than negatives with the lens. Keep up the good work you do and thanks for sharing your video and your thoughts.

I see the RF 200-800 as a wildlife lens. I like to shoot wildlife early in the morning, so that makes F9 a problem. I hate to admit it but I just like using F2.8 and F4 lenses. I’m looking at big dollars and weight to get something that fits my likes and style. Thanks for your comment.

@@Deweybing Thank you. I intend to use the lens for wildlife and sports. You’re absolutely right, F4 and F2.8 are much better lenses all round but their cost is just way out there. I have the EF 500 F4 mark II back home and I just love it. When I come to Florida each year I have the 100-500 and the 1.4x. I intend to trade the lens for the 200-800 as I’ll have 100mm extra reach and I’m hoping the af will be a bit faster without the tele converter attached. I’m looking forward to getting it and getting out here again in 2025 with it. Take care.

I was at Davu back in May. Did not realize you could get in there that early. I would suggest people look at using different ISO settings. Especially in low light. I'm no longer wedded to shooting at 100 ISO. During the when the light is bright, sure. One of the faults I have with Canon is you can't drop ISO lower than 100, which would be great for harsh mid day light. Thanks for the video. Love to see other shots you have taken, I live up the road from you in Springfield and find this area challenging to photograph. (From a landscape perspective.)

I like early morning or late evening wildlife photography. The light isn’t great so I need a low Fstops lens or very high ISO’s to get the shot. I did a couple of videos a year ago about early morning bird photography. I struggled with anything less the f2.8. Thanks for your comment.

Yes I prefer Micro 4/3rds over APSC. I like the smaller size of the Micro 4/3rds system. With APSC you get a smaller sensor but still the same size a weight. There is nothing wrong with APSC. I feel that if your going to have the size and weight you might as well go FF.

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Canon's philosophy when it comes to this RF system. I've been a Canon shooter since 1995. While I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a new EF 500mm f4 L IS USM II a few years ago, I was hoping for something a little more user friendly in the f5.6 range for situations where it is not feasible to lug out that massive lens. The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM just doesn't seem right for me. That f 7.1 at 500mm just sounds terrible and at $3,000 with tax, it puts it beyond what I want to spend for it. I feel like I would be throwing away money for less performance. The RF 200-800 feels equally compromised in performance in all but the brightest and harshest light.

Engineering is often a matter of tradeoffs. You want speed that comes with size and weight. You want convenience you lose some speed. I don’t worry about ISO. The cameras today do a good job of keeping noise manageable with recent software improvements. And I shoot birds late in the evening in swampy areas often covered by trees. I prefer lighter lenses and don’t have any problems with the RF 100-500mm and will shoot at 4000 ISO or higher if needed. If the exposure is accurate that will also lower the noise.
