Picked this one up from Drum Center of Portsmouth, in celebration of their (I think it was the 10th year anniversary?) anyway, had to have it (who wouldn't?) but there was only 10 made so, my timing was fortunate. an absolute beast! every client that tracks with it... walks away smiling.

Being a big Alex Van Halen fan, THIS was a must have for the collection so, when it came out as the 40th edition... I jumped on it!

Wanted this one for a while so... when I got a price I could live with, I got it. why? it has a focused note to it that records well and sits in the track, in an appealing way. (to my ear) also, I like heavy steel shells, and this one checked all the boxes for a good investment.

This was an odd choice for me but when I heard it...I had to have it. typically, not a Pearl guy but this drum has such an incredible explosiveness to it...I had to add it to the collection. I go deep and criticize harsh but, this one's a winner!

Sadley, Gretsch only made these for a few years. not sure why they stopped production on these? as it is one of my favorite heavy snares to record with. I always tell clients, "If you can find one used...buy it" made a few mods as well so, you'll want to check this one out.

A rare bird for sure, but one of the very best studio snares (sound wise) in my collection. if you're looking for something different?... the spun fiberglass shell puts it in a category of its own. mods and opinions, as always.

Great video!
I picked up one of these solely based on this video. It's an absolute shotgun!
@@bencampbell198 Hey Ben! Congrats on a killer drum...it's sad more people don't know about it though.
wow, what an unreal snare. im a huge pearl head so this one speaks to me for sure too. thanks for sharin.
I had one of the first with drop g reissue badge and sold it like a dummy. Paid 300 used and sold for 300 many years ago, like 08 or 09.
Still not for sale? Lovely video
Play it
If someone was going for that Tama sound, do you think the Ref Brass, or Bronze might get a little closer than the Ref Steel, or? I know every drum is different to, so that's cool to know the Steel also sounds close.
@@jamescassidy4045 ref steel is closest to Tama bell brass(to my ear)
@@klauth_Yksyn That's interesting! Great to know though! Thanks for sharing that! Hey Klaus, do you have any suggestions, or ideas for somewhere to get just a shell for my Free Floater chassis? I think I want to go with aluminum, or brass, but could be fun to get something a little different too, and have a custom Free floater, like a cool wood, or even acrylic might be kinda sweet. Any thoughts? It's a 6.5.
@jamescassidy4045 i think you can buy them from pearl, give the guys at DCP a call...they should be able to get you what you seek.
I think a Ref Snare Drum will be my next drum. I've wanted one for awhile. I actually got a Pearl OG Ref kit for my first studio kit(22, 16, 12, 10), and so far I really love it, but been struggling with getting a mic'd kick sound I'm happy with. It's hard to explain, but the transient/attack just wasn't focused/sharp, and it was a little boomy/boxy sounding. I dunno if I just had it tuned to low, or something, but I've heard these sound pretty damn good in other recordings, so I'll keep working at it.
@@jamescassidy4045 Those are great kits.👍
@@klauth_Yksyn Thanks man! Yeah, they def sound a little different than your average kit, and def seem to have it's own vibe going on, but so far I've only had one big session with it. TBH, usually I can dial in a kick pretty easily, and get a sound I'm pretty happy with, but it didn't go as planned this day. It was totally useable in the end, but I was very unhappy with it. Any chance I could send you the Kick Wav files to take a listen to just so I can get some ears on maybe what was going on, or could be improved. I had new heads, my usual, a PS3 Coated batter, a ported Ambassador Coated, a couple towels inside gently touching both heads, and tuning wise the batter was more or less just wrinkles out, I think at the lugs I was around 80-90Hz, and the Reso was about the same, maybe a hair higher.
@@jamescassidy4045 Hey James, I only do in person drum tech service these days, I learned the hard way to what works for me...man has to know his limitations.

Love the PanterA shirt. Just scored a ddrum Vinnie Paul snare. Dragon wrap.
Hey Vernon! nice score on the dragon wrap...Thats a keeper! 👍
Hey Klauth, Happy New Years, hope all is well. Is it cool if I run a couple things by you? I'm at the point where I've been trying to collect a little bit of an arsenal of drum's just for the studio, and to use when I'm working with band's, and just wondering if I could get your opinion/outlook on a couple things? I know what your outlook is on Vintage stuff, and after a few years of getting some vintage stuff, and continually having issues, I'm kind of at the same spot of just wanting to buy new, unless I can really really have the chance to inspect, and try something before I commit. I basically got three snares, and so far 2/3 which were snares I've particularly always wanted, and thought would be great snares to have if I could only have a handful of drums have ended up having issues in a sense. First was a 1972 Supra 5x14 that's actually had some history, and been on some big albums, then a vintage 6.5x14 Pearl Free floater. The third is an old first generation Bronze Pearl Sensitone 5.5x14 I believe, with tube lugs, a single flange hoop, but has those rimshot metal pad things all around it. Basically the Sensitone I'm just waiting to get here, and I have a month to take it back if it has issues, the Freefloater I actually traded a full Yamaha Stage Custom kit for, and the dude actually lied to me, and as soon as I got the drum upstairs I realized it had a homemade piece of welded aluminum, thats all warped, and the tube lugs were home machined, and sit all weird for a bunch of them, and throws off the tension/tuning hah. He acted all in a rush, take notes people, don't let a dude throw something at you, and say okay I gotta go, hurry up, so you can't inspect it. I called him literally 5 min after he left, asking for my kit back, and to come get his drum, but he just said he already dropped it off somewhere, and said he can't come back, then just blocked me everywhere hah. Anyway, the frame is all good, aside from needing lugs, and a shell somewhere hah. It has potential, and at this point I could do something unique for a shell, if anyone has any suggestions?? Anyway, here's my main question. It's on the topic of the 1972 Supra. Basically, I got a 1972 Supraphonic 5x14, but it ended up that it's just ever so slightly out of round, and just enough to where tuning is pretty hard, and though I can get the batter pretty even in pitch, it has the symptoms of like, you know how as you tighten a few of the lugs, the others will keep slipping, but way more than normal, and the biggest symptom is lets say i have the batter in tune at each lug pretty much, even though it's so called in tune, half the lugs will be super tight, and the other half feel like they are a quarter turn away from slipping out, and having no tension on them. I wasn't sure if it was the hoops to blame at first, but after trying quite a number of hoops, and actually measuring the drum (outside edge to outside edge lug to lug) I notice that on half the drum it's off. Like at one side to the other (4 lugs), ill get pretty much an even 14", and the other side is like 14" and a bit across(2 lugs), and the other two lugs are even a bit more. What I'm wondering is, is it even a possibility to somewhat fix an aluminum drum like this, and at least somewhat get it back in round, or better in round? I know I've seen people out there sort of re roll out, or flex brass shells, but I know a drum like this can't really be manipulated so easily, but are there people out there who could do something possibly with certain equipment, or am I basically screwed in terms of the shell? It just sucks, because it's actually in amazing condition otherwise, and has some neat history. Secondly, are there any things that could help with, or that you'd recommend for overall tuning ease/stability? I was going to get new hoops, and throw off, and clean/redo the springs in the lugs, and get those lug washers you always use, but in terms of like type of hoops, heads, snare wires(more/less strands) etc, do you have any recommendations? Thanks Klaus, and sorry if this is a lot of words. I just thought it'd be fun to tell a bit of my experience with buying vintage snares, and the fun it's brought me so far lol.
Hi James, Thanks for sharing. this is exactly why I don't get into vintage drums so, If it were me, I'd sell it. even at a loss and move on to something that is up to spec. Unless you're into fixer up projects? sounds to me like it could be fixed but, paying the proper person to fix it would cost more than a new drum so, unless you're in love with it...dump it and move on. as time IS money in the world of business.
I have 2 lm402’s. One with an extra wide strainer, and one without. I can’t tell a difference in the two. Both 6.5x14.
Appreciate the videos. Thanks! Ever thought about sharing information on your cymbal collection?
Hey Derek, I tried that a few times and no one really responded.
Thanks for the vid, Klauth!
Now I got a Neve 1073 and an API vision but you really should do a series on mics and snares and the different EQ’s you use for different situations
Hey Ramon, good to hear from you! I actually put out a few videos like that in the past and they seemed to confuse more than help. maybe a little to advanced for most? so, I gave up on that effort.
In my experience, you don't need Canopus leather washers with DW stainless tension rods. The thread alone on those rods is a finer pitch and isn't going to move. Though I understand the strainer change to the millennium, it's just a a finer throw and tunes easier; why the butt plate change, not sure on how that matters. Hoops will definitely alter the sound. If you are dealing with a 1.2mm shell thickness, you will certainly love 3mm hoops or even 4mm die cast. The blend of a feminine thin sounding shell with a more masculine thicker hoop just works. That's the old Gretsch formula. If you are playing an aluminum drum at 1.6 for 1.7mm (plated), a 2.3mm or especially a 1.6mm opens the drum up considerably. All in all, you have a very nice collection and have obviously spent time on doing some great mods for the sound you seek. Well done! One mod I make on my Hammered Bronze Luddy is the old Jim Keltner fan belt mod. I make a diagonal cut on a fan belt and spot glue it into the bottom inside lip of the snare drum. It offers a bit of ring reduction and helps me avoid any further muffling. Jim gave me this mod decade's ago. Is it a dramatic change? No. But does it just cut some ring? Yep.
Hi Lou! Good stuff! thanks for checking and sharing. 👍
I gots some Wigs. Tune them with a Tune-Bot to 295/398 Your pretty darn close!
Klauth, I do not mean to offend but all I hear in this demo is varying amounts of unfocused tone with snare wire spray. I had high hopes from watching your earlier Supra mods video. Do you think these examples in any way sound Bonhamesque? Sincerely, Walter
@@waltgdrums1 Hey Walter! Thanks for chiming in 👍 I intentionally made them sound like that. One extreem to another (buzz to snap) as I wanted to let the shell material differances to be heard vs trying to replicate Bonham sound, which is an entirely different tuning frequency. Appreciate your feedback, no offence taken.
Man, I’m thinkin of buying that Supraluxe DCP exclusive snare, I like 8 lug snares and cob idk shiz ain’t cheap tho, cool video I’m sure that snare sounds killer
Thats a cool snare!
Get those rubber gaskets out of there! They really mute the shell. Don't worry about the little extra rod splay. Means NOTHING to the performance. Also, remember..... Bonham was playing Ludwig snares with 1.6mm (1/16") hoops. Makes a difference!

is that hammered acrolite a 6.5"? Where in the world did you get it?
Hey Bryan, thanks for checking in. Got it from, drum center of Portsmouth. it's the driest of all the aluminum drums I have.
I'm curious how you're using DW lugs on that second drum since they have a finer thread pitch. In that case, I'm guessing you would have had to change the part that the lug screws into (the swivel nut I think)?
@@hamjam4 Hi Ben, the DW tunning rods come with their own swivel nuts so, you just swap them out.

I LOVE these drums. I have the smooth and hammered versions and will never sell either. They can take just about any tuning, head combo, or hoops (especially those beefy Ludwig twin channel marching style hoops). Really makes it easy to slot into any situation or genre.
