Love the bus, used to drive them while I was in college, but I'd prefer the 4 speed manual.
The manuals are certainly fun to drive!
Great video!
Thanks DotaRoom! Much appreciated. We just spent the weekend in 100 degree weather and it kept the bus "comfortable". It's a bit lacking if you like ultimate comfort, but I plan to install a 24V unit on the back wall above the bed sometime soon.
You need to invest $50 in an electric stapler brother. Your my age roughly and I’m currently converting an 82 MC9 and it’s not as easy as it used to be and those old manual staple guns are not easy on our tired hands. I refused for a long time to get one but I’ve gotta tell ya that it’s one of my best investments
I agree. Those manual staplers are junk. If I load a whole ream of staples, the stupid thing jambs up. It's been that way since it was new. I know of another guy who had the exact same problem. But, now that I'm finished, I forgot the pain! I would sure like to see your project. I take it you aren't planning to make UA-cam videos?
Looks like it is as smooth as a Cadillac and you make driving it look as easy and effortless as driving a Kia! Seems soo quiet and smooth compared to other MCI videos on here..
Yeah, I still have the bus, but it has a few problems. Once I fix a problem with a brake canister, it's going up for sale. I does sound good though!
We have the same bus but we are having problems with the front tires not getting air pressure. Any idea why is this happening? The back tires has good air pressure.
If you are referring to the air bags, there are leveler arms connected to some valves that adjust the height of the bus. Either the air bags are bad or the leveler arms need to be adjusted. If the air bags are bad, then they usually won't air up at all (all or nothing). I can't say I know a lot about them though. Good luck!
Very messy garage.
Thanks Glen, always nice to see a bus video.
You're welcome Ron. I'm kind of running out of projects. I need a big pile of money and unlimited time so I can get a bunch of other accessories to make more videos with!
Do you have the part number for the door seal and aluminum piece?
I looked all over for the order slip and receipt, but was unable to locate it. However, I ordered it from www.nfi.parts. They handle MCI bus parts. I had to open a "cash account" that enables me to order parts without being a wholesaler. They are kind of difficult to work with, but once you have an account, you can order parts from them. I do recall the gasket assemblies were about $450. I hope you are able to find a set. Thanks.
Beautiful repair, Mr. Glennman. I will need help with aligning my main door someday. Enjoy the description and details of your build! Keep movin forward!
Thanks Robert. I hope your build works out!
Looking good Glenn !
Thanks Ron. it came out better than I expected!
Nice work
Thank you Steve. The entry has been a long time coming. I had about 50 ideas for it over the last couple of years, then I finally settled down to what works!
Same bus, same tools, same problem, except it's the other side. I had to use the grinder to get the rusty bolts off too. The L-bracket is rusted all to pieces. I was going to weld a new one on, but I'm glad I watched this to see that there is another option. So you extended the stainless-steel plate and I'm assuming you drilled new holes in the bottom of the chassis where the "run" is? How did that work out? Mind sharing more about how you made it work? Thanks!!
There was enough of the original steel flanges (the rusty ones) left for me to put the bolts back in. When you think about it, those (2) bolts don't do much anymore with the way the plate is extended. All the pressure is upward anyway. I plan to do the same thing to the other side when I change the other air bag. Let me know if you have any questions!
Looks very professional and clean Glenn.
Thanks much!
Turned out nice Glenn, Happy New Year to you and your family.
You have a great New Year too Ron!
That ceiling is looking good. I like your attention to rattles.
Thank you very much!
I bet that was a blast Glenn, Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It was a lot of fun. I hate those cheap Walmart lights though. They work intermittently. Next year will be different!
Looks good. I was thinking of doing something similar with my Prevost. The whole engine slides out the back so I would like to see how someone did one first. Any welding on the frame involves unplugging a whole bunch of electronics and the batteries. The bin is high enough for a small motorcycle so that is another option. The Goldwing definitely wont fit.
You are correct on needing to unplug everything before doing any welding. I bolted all this on with no welding. That way, I can remove it if I ever need to pull the engine out the back. Thanks for watching!
Looked like the perfect spot Glenn, Nice job.
Looks like its going to work out pretty good, I have to back up on some videos to catch up on the install, do you have an idea how long it will run on a tank that size. Thanks and nice job Glenn.
Hi Glenn, I’m enjoying your bus build and I noticed you were pretty close to the ceiling, wondering how tall you are. I did an 18” roof raise on my MC9 and I’m only 6’, keep up the good work.
Hi Brad. I'm about 6'2" with my boots on. If I recall, my ceiling is about 6'5". I don't have any trouble with the ceiling height. The reason I didn't raise it is my lack of patience! I'm turning 62 next May and wanted to use the bus as soon as possible! Sounds like you are having a great time and you're all in.
I have an MCI bus D4005 we left lights on, the batteries drained so we charged them up. The batteries heated up and caused the fire suppression to release powder in back of motor. Bought new batteries and doesn’t want to start. We need help!
When you attempt to start it, what does it do? I don't think my bus has a fire suppression system, but I've read that some do. It might have some kind of reset that gets tripped by the release of the suppression device. What year is your bus?
From what I have seen and understand all our wiring in our '75 Mc5B is powered by a 24v to 12 volt converter so I want to keep all those wires where they are use them or hide them for later use but our bus will be mostly 12v. We are trying to keep some things and reuse them too, like our overhead racks, I am looking at cutting them down so they are only 12-14" deep, we want to try and use at least one.
Yep. I've seen a lot of people utilizing the original overheads. One thing about it, they are built very well. I kind of wish I would have saved maybe 4 of the seats and mounted them up front for passengers. Thanks for watching.
Looked like it fit like a glove Glenn. I bought a 1998 MCI 102D3 This summer, I will start on the build next year and was woundering what would work best for a hitch. Thanks for the video.
Perfect timing huh? Have fun on your build. I think the '98 is probably one of the best buses to convert because it has conventional wiring harnesses rather than the multi-plex system like I have. I grit my teeth every time I start it thinking it is going to have some kind of a weird issue!
Thanks for all your videos. Im currently building a 2001 mci D4500 in Massachusetts. It is a tribute my cat who saved me from suicide. All of your videos have inspired my build. Thanks for sharing.
I am very glad to hear that. I hope I can help in some way. I love to hear about people starting on their buses especially when they are like mine. Thanks for letting me know!
I know exactly where you were, been there many times, Bandon is one of our favorite places on the Oregon coast and we always stop at the creamery. I helped my buddy Doug fix the fan clutch on his 2009 MCI in Alaska a couple years ago. Working off the back of a flatbed truck and that fan and crossbar assembly was plenty heavy and fun to get in and out of there. The clutch was some sort of expensive and unobtainium electromagnetic nightmare so we had to disassemble it and replace bearings inside - it was coming apart internally. Fortunately we were at my dad’s place with every tool known to man - just lacking parts having to order and wait for them from lower 48.
Yep, I watched that video a long time ago. After that I've been paranoid about my own fan clutches! Thanks for weighing in.
It is NOT safe to drive a bus holding a cap period.
What's a "cap"?
@@glennman9890wonder if he was meaning “cup” as in your coffee cup? That’s the only thing that makes any sense to me but in your defense, I saw nothing at all unsafe with your driving whether you were holding your cup or not!
@@1982MCI Yeah, I figured that. I was more teasing him, but I didn't get a response!
Unbelievable. We own a big coach. We just took a 1600 mile trip. I would freak if this happened. In 21 we took it cross country. We had a friend who lost his water pump. Left it at a fast food place 3 weeks till he got back and fixed it.
We had a '68 GMC fishbowl years ago and put thousands of miles on it and never had a problem on the road. It was just a fluke thing!
Glad you got you bus back to the house. Are Van Hool t2134 good buses? Thanks,
I've never really looked at one very closely. I know they are a very nice looking bus!
Wow Glenn, that was the last thing I thought would come through the vents on the back. Awesome you was able to swap it out yourself, good job and safe travels.
Yep. It was quite discouraging. Once I started into it (before going home and waiting for parts) it didn't look as bad. Even though some of the bolts were rusted, they came out just fine, so I went home with a positive outlook. I disassembled as much as I could before we left for home just in case there was any trouble.
We were just there!
You were in Bandon? That would have been awesome if we would have crossed paths!
@@glennman9890 My daughter is working in Bandon. She’s on a fire assignment.
It's sure good to see that things worked out for you. Hopefully, next time you're down this way or we're up there, we'll cross paths.
Yes, definitely. Too bad you couldn't have gotten there just a little earlier. Maybe next time!
Glennman, like your videos.. Looking to buy a bus myself and start the long project. What price range of a bus should I be looking for? I may have asked you this question before, but I have not been able to find that post. Would like something under 40K, I do not know what is reasonable for a decent mechanical bus.
That's a tough question! I happened to stumble across mine at $1000 from a local fruit company that was getting rid of it. It was the only one they had and they were 20 miles away. I would think that a decent bus could be found for 25 to 35K. I would definitely have it checked out by a reputable mechanic first however. Mine had a few issues that I just don't know much about such as some blow by. I don't really know if it's a big problem or not, or if it's normal or what. I just keep driving it around! Someday I'll take it to someone professional and get the lowdown on it. With everything I've put into it so far, I would put in a new motor if I had to. You really need to look at it as a fun project, not an investment! Good luck!
If you ever get to Oklahoma let me know. We have a full hook up. We are half way from OKC and Dallas, right off I-35. Your probably going to get tired of hearing from me. LOL@@glennman9890
I've always liked MCI coaches since the mid 1980's. I always wanted to convert or have one converted and looked at many. I have driven Prevost coaches cross country and they drive nice, but I always loved the stainless side MCI coaches. I figured if they were good enough for Greyhound to drive 7 days a week cross country then that was good enough for me. Enjoyed the video and hope you make more.
Thanks Richard. Sounds like you need to cut loose and buy a bus!!!
Looked like a fun drive Glenn, wow those winding roads packed with a great view. You left us with a clif hanger, hope its not to bad of a disaster. Enjoyed the ride.
Thanks Ron. I'll be heading back down there to repair and retrieve the bus hopefully this weekend!
You're in my neck of the woods. Where & when will you be down here? Still wondering what your road failure is. Tough break.
I'm heading down to Bandon tomorrow. We will be there at around 9:00 pm, so not much will take place until Sunday morning. I had a steel rod (some kind of tool) get jammed into the radiator and it took out the radiator and fan blades. I have all new stuff to install Sunday.@@jimo199966
We're in the Face Rock Creamery RV parking lot a block over from 101. It should only take about 2 hours to get on the road. I already have almost everything disassembled!@@jimo199966
@glennman9890 I'm about 40 minutes from Bandon so hopefully my wife and I can meet you both. We're really impressed with your skills, design and repurposing of materials
Nice work

Thank you very much Steve!

Much appreciated Big Ron!
Hey Glenn be safe going down the Oregon coast. Sorry I have not commented on the last videos. I am just kinda giving up for now on the reconstruction this old tin can. Anyhow if some weird stuff happens and you guys get stuck. Just post a video with contact information. I live in Klamath Falls but I am more than glad to meet you if you in need of help. I have the tools for these beasts.. 😅
Well, That's real nice of you! I sure am sorry to hear of your project setback. Maybe you can pick it up again. A bus conversion is not an easy task for sure!
Looks great Glenn !
Thanks Big Ron! Much appreciated.

Great quality work and video
Thank you Steve. Thanks for watching.
Good job
Thanks Yvan. I'm hoping to make one of the bus rallies next year. I really hope to see you guys at one of them!
Looking good Glenn.
Thank you Big Ron!
best laugh iv had in a loooong time..thanx for that...
Yeah, I thought that would generate some laughs! Thanks!
Hi Glenn, how tall are you. I am looking at buying a similar bus thinking if it will be too cramped. I am under 5’10 though!
Hey Mr. Tesla... With my Danner boots on, I'm about 6'3" tall. I get along in the bus just fine even with the 1/2" iso board under the 7/16" OSB. Hope this helps!
Good idea. I'll have to check my fridge. Hey Glenn can you send me the same info as you sent before? I got a new phone and lost everything.
I'd be glad to. Do you have the same phone number?
@@glennman9890 yes I do. Thanks
