This is an introduction to customary and contemporary Māori Kowhaiwhai (Māori design and Painting). I am still a tauira myself so I would love to have a bit of a wānanga in the comments surrounding different design variations and meanings.

Kia ora e te whaanau, I loved creating this exhibition and learning more about the taonga that is kaakahi (fresh water mussels). Not only are they precious in a cultural sense but also as an integral aspect of our water ecology as natural filters. Unfortunately, their population is depleting and more research is needed to successfully grow them in-vitro. However, the researchers completing this...

This commissioned design has essentially the same meaning as the last video as it was a two part commission as they were unsure as to where they wanted the Tā Moko

This was a fun and meaningful design to create with a Hauraki style taniwha. When designing Tā Moko it can be a bit of trial and error compositionally which is why it could take anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours to create a design. When I do commissions the client will sometimes have photo inspiration which helps me to get a better idea of the style and general shape they want. This holds persona...

Can someone please explain to me what is a tohu, and how it is different from kowhaiwhai? Is a koru or mangopare by itself considered a tohu, or is it something totally different?

Raperape (Buttocks tattoo) = Unity, Love, Multiplication, Relationship, Harmony, Pair, As Above, So Below, As Within, so Without - Reflections, Ripples of water, Karma, Consequence and/to Action. Male and Female essence (Ira Tane + Ira Wahine = Mauri) - 2 individuals starting their life journey and connecting on that journey, Rangi and Papa embracing, birth, creation, double, opposites, polarity, twins - sun and moon, day and night, cold and warmth, calm and anxious, black and white etc.

Hey you got samoan patterns in there it's not Maori no offense to Maori culture koz it I think Maori culture is beautiful but give were credit is due, because we don't want this next-generation to be confused we're these patterns originally come from

Kia Ora, if you are referring to the Spearhead pattern known as "Pakati" then No they are not Samoan designs. The 'Pakati' are a representation of a Dog Skin Cloak, but it also represents a Warriors Battles, Courage, and Strength in Maori culture.

So my brother's wife is native New Zealander and they just had their first child a year and a half ago. I've yet to meet either of them, but I've been trying to learn about these designs and their meanings along with any traditional patterns/gifts/practices when there's a marriage/child born etc -- possibly involving beading or knotwork etc...because I'm a crafter. I want so bad to have it be totally accurate...cause she's very in touch with her heritage (and The fact she was the lead in a movie specifically revolving around native New Zealander beliefs and practices as a kid doesn't help with the pressure either) Any advice???

i also got into carving jade and was self taught, i started with buying a bag of slabs with no intention of carving them a few years back, and then gradually started trying new things, I think personally what I use is small dremil sandpaper discs of 180, 220, 240, and then there are those fabric buffing wheels also same dremil size attachments with green buffing compound. I find it that buffing does a good job of getting into places that you cant really cover with sandpaper. then i use sandpaper of 1000 2000 3000 with my hands (it's probably better to buff after sanding)
