The Fall of U-515 and SS Ceramic's Demise: WWII Naval Warfare
U-515, a WWII German U-boat, met its end on 9 April 1944 after a battle with Allied forces in the Atlantic.
Severely damaged by depth charges and aircraft from USS Guadalcanal, the submarine surfaced and was scuttled by its crew. Of the 60 crew members, 16 were lost, and 44 were captured.
The sinking of U-515 marked a significant Allied victory, showcasing the intense underwater warfare of WWII and the perilous life of submariners.
SS Ceramic, a British ocean liner, was torpedoed by U-515 on 6 December 1942 while en route from Liverpool to Australia.
The attack left 655 dead, with only one survivor rescued by the U-boat. This tragedy stands as one of the deadliest maritime disasters of the war, reflecting the severe toll of naval conflict.

Excellent video, thank you. My grandfather was a crew member aboard the SS Ceramic on that fateful night. I only found this out after my father past away, and my step mother handed me an envelope containing a telegram from the King to my grandmother informing her of his loss at sea, on the back of the telegram was typed SS Ceramic, also in the envelope was a scroll from the King to my grandmother. This sent me on the journey to learn more about the SS ceramic, I found out from my search that my grandfather was born in Sydney Australia, and emigrated to the UK. His name is shown at Tower Hill Memorial in London and also at the The Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Thank you for the video.

Did U-196 sink any allied ships or merchant vessels? You are paying tribute to the 65 crew members lost with this U-boat…. But no tribute to the crews lost from any unarmed merchant ships they sank? On a isolated and focused view, the crew may have served honorably for their country, but in the bigger picture of of what Germany and the Nazis did this is an odd tribute.

Thank you for your comment. The tribute to U-196's crew is meant to acknowledge the human cost of war on all sides, not to overlook the tragedies faced by those on the ships they sank. I also feel sad for every life lost in the war and strive to present history with balance and respect for all. May all lives lost in war rest in peace 🕊

The first place to look for U-Boats that disappear without a definitive location to search like a sighting or attack, would be in and around any known minefield area's. To me that would be the place to start. Every nation kept meticulous records of their mine laying so it wouldn't be difficult.

@@docholidayoutlaws104 That is something they already know most times, but it amounts to multiple map quadrants. The search area would be way too large. To look where their patrol area abuts mine fields would be smartest. I sure someone way smarter than I has thought of it.

Not a one way story. Many thousands of merchant sailors were drowned by their activities or left drifting around in life boats in mid winter. Plus women and children. A little too much romance methinks. Let's hear both sides of the story.

An unnecessary war was started by only two people: Hitler with his madness, and Churchill with his crimes. Because history is written by the victor, Churchill became a great hero, while he was no less criminal than Hitler.

U-Boat Crews that never returned home are estimated at 75-80% of the entire force. These young men were extremely brave and should be honored for their service to their country. The Kriegsmarine was the last branch of the German Services to adopt the Swastika to their Flag and for good reason. The vast majority of Kriegsmarine Sailors were not members of the Nazi Party. They were merely members of the military fighting for what their country. What the men of U-869 endured must have been a horrific end. Condolences to their families and friends.

I’d have to read the book again but off hand I don’t recall seeing any navy ships reporting about depth charging a submarine around that time period. Regardless circle runners were common problem so I believe that is what sunk it.

The discovery of this sub was chronicled in the book 'Shadow Divers'. It's quite a tail. They actually entered the sub and got all the way into the engine room to find positive identification. Laying in 240ft of water makes it a dangerous dive with limited time on the bottom before divers have to come up. It claimed the lives of a father and son dive team that were helping trying to identify it.
