Hi. I'm Kathleen. I'm an artist and a teacher. During COVID quarantine of 2020, I jumped on Facebook and did 6 Facebook LIVE paint classes for all of us stuck at home. That was the start of my online painting career. I'm happy to share those original videos here with you on UA-cam and more. Check out kathleenbroaderick.com.
Color Theory for Painters - Extreme Color - the Relationship of Value & Color
In this video you'll learn how you can use non-local color in your paintings - in other words - how to paint a pink cow and get away with it! It's so fun to paint colorfully and I've found a way to make it feel more realistic.

Hi Kathleen, it would be better to change the position of the high and low keys in your value chart for your students to understand and remember it. The sun is the most lit light in the sky, so it would be better to put the light keys at the top of your chart and the low keys at the bottom because they are heavy.
Hi. Thanks for your comment. The concept of high key and low key is something that's sometimes hard to remember and as artists we are visual learners. I like your idea. Thanks.
@@kathleenbroaderick3512 Your welcome, and wish you good luck !
Another great video on color! Thank you Kathleen! You are so generous to share them with us!
Good to hear! I'm so glad you found it valuable. Thanks for commenting.

Great video on Hue, Value and Chroma! Very well explained, clear and concise. Sometime we just need to review what we thought we already knew!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it.

I just want to know how to you think about colors, since it looked different a lot with the original pictures
Hey Serena. I think about value more than color. I think if you have the correct value in a shape, you can alter/adjust the color and it will still read correctly. Did you paint the pears?
@@kathleenbroaderick3512 thank you
Why not just use a proportion wheel?
It also involves a little math but you can do that too. Thanks for the suggestion.
Why this is important to me -- I spend time finding the perfect reference photo and cropping it to be exactly how I want the painting to look. For example, I don't like alot of white space around my still life subject. I prefer it to fill the canvas and even have some areas that are going off the canvas. So when I find the reference photo I like, I crop it on my photos app on my computer or iphone. Then I print it out in black and white and use this method to make and adjustments (ei: cutting it down with my scissors based on my formula I shared) to make sure that when I draw from it onto my canvas it will fit exactly like I've planned. Can you wing it? Sure. In my process, I use the reference photo black and white to draw the lines and shapes onto my canvas so I want to know that my photo is exactly proportional to my canvas. I feel the more you can think about how you are going to paint a subject before you actually start, the better. I also use this pre-painting time to analyze the values, color, etc., It's all part of my painting process.
Wow, I love your take on the heron. You have a great intuitive style.
Hey. Thanks a wonderful compliment. Thanks so much! I hope you enjoyed the video.
Kathleen, I appreciate these tips done in a very practical and visual way. Sometimes I am asked by my publisher to create paintings for a retailer, and they love high-key work, so now I am exploring that way of doing things, and find that I really like the effect. Thanks so much for this video.
Hey Pamela. I really like it too. I think it is very pleasing to the eye. I’ve found it is not as easy as it looks to do it and stay true to good values. I am continuing to explore too. You are welcome. Best of luck. Please share your progress.
You are so sweet and wonderful artist and teacher
Thank you Debra! So glad you are enjoying the videos.
I just watched this video again a year and 1/2 later and it is CHOCK FULL of good information. Must watch!
Its beautiful. Like all your work.
That is such a special story Kathleen and a beautiful painting as well!!!
I love how it all came together. Thank you Marion!
Future so bright you better wear shades!
Painting is too far away!
Hi. Yes. It is. This was my first video and I was still trying to figure it all out. I found I can zoom in on the video by pinching out with my fingers if that helps on this one.
Please post the video you said you made about all of your supplies and such in detail. I cannot find it but would love to see it! Thank you so much for this art lesson, it was so wonderful. About to try my own rooster now! 🤞🏻
Hey Brooke. I may have to do another! I'm so glad you liked the class. How did your rooster turn out?
