Music Theory How-To: Listening for Compound vs. Simple Time
I finally understand!! Thank you so much!
Jimi Hendrix, Elliott Smith, Electric Light Orchestra, Radiohead, Frank Sinatra…I think you have great taste 🙏🏼
Thank you so much, I learned something In 12 minutes which I’d struggled with for years.
Do you think that We are the Champions could be multiple meter? I agree with the 6/8 for the chorus but when I listen to the verse I hear more quadruple time, not as strong a down beat.
Such a great video thank you
Thank you so much for the awesome explanation!!!!
Really, really appreciate your teaching style. Absolutely to the point & very clear. Thank you! :)
Fantastic 😍...really your explanations of compound and simple meter helps me to understand from 5 years of learning ❤❤
You explained this so clearly! Thank you. You have a great voice for this. Very pleasant sounding and great diction.
thank you sm you're going to help me pass AP theory <3
Thank u so much
You nailed this 🤯
😂
thanks queen I might actually pass my exam now :)
I want to say thank toy veery much, only you in internet could explain all nuances of building intervals. Youre the best
I think I am brain dad on this topic
I missed my Theory class last week, so this was very helpful. Thank you.
I'm having some difficulties intepreting the itallian tempo marks for compound meters. I have a song here with is to be played in allegro - about 120 bmp. This would mean 4 6th notes notes at 120 bmp, however if it is compuound I would have 6 notes instead, making the song much faster and harder to play. My question is, are the itallian words for tempo the same in a compound meter?
Please can you drop the fifth species?
This was so helpful- thank you! I'm wondering how you recommending counting 8th notes in compound time? I'm really only used to counting in 4/4 like 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 but I'm unclear on what the equivalent in compound time would be? Thanks again!
Thank you! This video is still helping people 😂😅 also amazing musical selections!! (I'm not a fan of Katy Perry myself but to each their own)
I'm going to watch every video in this series. Great teaching.
Wow thank professor Sarah now I get it!
Thank you immensely for generously sharing your knowledge. It holds great significance.
Amazing video, thank you Sarah
Suuuuper well explainned Thank u 💯
2 minutes in and I understand it better than my hour-long college lecture.
Yes same thank you!
Thank you so much! This was super helpful
so good to watch you count it out. Makes it easier to grasp. You are a very good (and kind) teacher.
Triplet tuplets also came from compound meters that's why they are considered a tuplet grouped in 3's with a 3 on top when they are placed in simple meters.
The groupings of must have originated in the compound meter. Then the tuplets integrated into compound meters and became known as sextuplets. The quantity of them all depends on the top numbers of the time signatures.
Is 16/4 time in a simple meter? You can fit 4 whole-notes with 16 beats total. Since it's all even in 4 I would assume it to be in a simple meter.
pretty solid video.... but the Radiohead song broke my brain. I wanted to go 6/8
In one idle passing comment you've explained something that all my music instruction has taken for granted: the meaning of the ^ notation over a number. So now I know it means simply the scale degree in the key being discussed. Gawd thank you!
Thank you Sarah, that was helpful.
Excellent. And for students watching this, remember that an augmented 2nd never stopped Alvo Part. Take theory with a grain of salt!
Wow! Thank you, finally someone explains this in a way I can understand. You are an excellent teacher.
This lesson is Amazing! 🙏
Very good lessons .! I will be learning from you ! 🙏
Can't say I've really got it down yet, but this really helps me get closer. Thanks!
You are the BEST!!!!!!
AWWWWWW, you are so awesome!!! Thank you for posting such wonderful theory explanations!!!
Very well put Sarah (:
Well explained 💐
Gosh you saved my life❤
This is so helpful thank you! I’m able to find the beat and how it divides, but I always mess up the beat grouping :(. Does anyone have any advice for this?
Subbed!
