Altogether, very nicely done!!!!! I call tis really first rate. If it were mine I'd be seeking to disguise or replace the lichen, especially near the front. It looks a bit too much like lichen, at least to non-novices. But still, first rate and I love it. I really like the way you've spread that village over all te levels, and yet somehow it works to knit everything together. Remarkably, the layout does not seem over crowded. I presume there's a grade from lowest to highest point concealed in the back somewhere....

Great 009 layout. I see you’ve left the rails unpainted, does it improve running and minimise track cleaning? Also what couplings are you using?
Thank you Stephen, The rails were painted with a thin wash of Humbrol brown colour enamel (110 I think) just to take the shine off them, then wiped along top edges of rails. Couplings used were original Egger-Bahn type on the bogie coaches, and Bemo on the other stock. This layout was sold 9 years ago.

hi there. could you tell me which tunnel portals you used on this build or did you scratch build them? love this layout yet to see it in the flesh though
Hello, Thank you for your kind comment. The lower tunnel portals are scratch built made using sanded Wills Coarse Stone sheets and some Wills brick arch (cut out) overlays. The upper station portal (with the railings) is also made with Wills sheet. The upper village portal is made using some Peco N Gauge NB-33 bridge sides raised slightly to allow taller trains and also a raised parapet wall. The layout was exhibited 4 times this year around East Anglia and (so far) has 3 bookings for next year, Bury St Edmunds, Norwich and Stowmarket.
Absolutely beautiful, an inspiration for me, I'm in the middle of building a 009 layout, but no where near the standard of yours, well done.

Thank you. Shortwaite Hill is 44" x 24". An article about it appeared in the March 2021 "Railway Modeller" magazine.
