Ausangate is the 5th highest mountain in Peru and the highest in the Cusco region of South Eastern Peru. The climb is an "AD" on the alpine scale, the technical crux of the climb is an ice/snow wall of 150 meters. Ausangate is a great next step for climbers who have climbed Chimborazo or other high Andean peaks and are looking for a bit more technical challenge.

In 1985 a Mexican team of 10 climbers climbed a route on the NW face of Huandoy, over 3 weeks and with 1,200 meters of fixed rope. On October 19th, 2017 I did a variation to their route in 19 hours round trip from moraine camp above Laguna Paron.

We got caught in a storm after climbing Ausangates NW face, rappelled down the wrong side of the face and had to bivouac for the night without sleeping bags or a stove. this is the first rappel the next morning. In my life I never got round to mountain climbing. Only high 'trek' I did was Kilimanjaro but by that time I was too old to take up and gain the experience to climb a mountain like Salkantay. I admire people who achieve a summit like this (what an experience) but I can't help thinking you have to be mad, and I don't mean a little bit mad. A big bit mad.😊
