I made a LOFI SOUNDTRACK for a Stanley Kubrick movie using 0-Coast, OP-1 and CBA Generation Loss!
Why people say it has hollow sound and is it?
Great vid! Definitely gonna try this. My XY just came in today!
Happy you got inspired from my video AND got your XY!!! Have fun with this awesome machine!
Hey Shimmery, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, would you love to have a logo for your channel to have a brand image your audience can remember your contents from and also can be one of the merch print you can sell to your fans to buy and own and share the words about your channel too? Let me know if you interested and I would love to work with you to design these for you! :-)
It still looks like it should be priced like an Ableton Move or a Polyend Tracker
How so? This thing is light years beyond ableton move in design and function.
Dont go by the look. This thing is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy more powerful then the devices you mentioned. Theres a two hr deep dive on this by one of the creators and trust me 2300 bucks is exactly what id charge if id created this.
Thanks for the tip! And I always love seeing Rick Rubin's book sitting around on people's desks :)
Rick is a legend! Glad you liked the video :) have a great day!
So is there a way to reset all those parameters that are left over like lfos, sends, filters … when you start a new sound engine? Or is manually correcting them the only way? You could create a blank engine preset and load that I guess
I havn’t found a way to get a fully blank track, no. The blank present idea is a very good idea 👍
steps longer than 1bar doing the record idea works for now but I like to program notes without using record I hope they give us an option to do so in a new firmware update soon! thanks for the content ❤
You’re welcome! :) recieved some great workaround ideas from some heroes here in the comment section. You can change the scaling of the sequencer so it basically shows both bars in one. Or try to use the ”player” called Hold.
Maybe I’m a mad scientist over here, but here’s my question. Given the long sample length, would it be possible to make a beat in the first several tracks, and then use the sampler to record vocals on the later track ? That way you could actually make full songs on this with vocals and beat on it?
Love mad scientist questions 😄 absolutely you could record vocals and you can get it to work - and it would be glorious - but it might be a bit of a headache to get it right. But would loooove to see it happen! Let me know if you try 🙏
@ my op xy is back ordered, but it should arrive in January, hopefully. For now I will be meditating on the most amazing beats and vocal lines to punctuate the melodic synthetic rhythms for my musical adventure in 2025
This is bringing to light how you can perform an entire set with the keys! I will be using this method over the arranger to sample multiple different patterns and add them to multiple drum engines and playback the patterns manually, feels more spontaneous and performative that way. Thanks for your videos!
That is a very cool idea! Go for it! Since XY has 24 voices you can have several resamples from one drum engine playing at the same time.
Ok, question. I can probably look it up in the manual, but how do you make each key in a drum sampler only play the sample while the key is held? Is there a gate/trigger setting? I’m thinking like playing the drum sampler sp404 style, with each key loaded with individual complete patterns right? I suppose I could set each key to choke every other key, but that sounds tedious. I still need to experiment a LOT more but figured I’d ask!
Found it! Shift + light gray encoder switches between loop and gate when key is held.
I never like bouncing tracks since it is destructive ... I end up with something i like but with issues i cant fix... But you are definitely on too something... Ill try it
You and me both! This still leaves me with some feeling of control. It’s a bit time consuming but you could basically bounce every track on it’s own as well as different combinations.
anyone figure out how to copy and paste a sound on the drums sampler to place it on another pad (slot)?
Unfortunatley not. Don’t think it’s implemented yet.
oh man, still trying to figure it out, will let you know when I find out for sure!
Chop, mangle, put in a stew!
🤣🤣🤣
You're becoming the new true cuckoo! Those tutorials are pure insanity. Thank you for sharing.
Oh you are too kind! 🥹 Cuckoo is a legend and a really nice guy. Met him briefely last year. Thank you for watching my videos! It makes me so happy that fine people like yourself find them inspirational ❤️
Awesome stuff keep up the videos they are excellent! OP-XY is was to freaking fun and awesome!
Thank you so for the support! Really happy you like my videos ❤️ i couldn’t agree more 😎
this workflow is amazing.... I use it also with the brain to sample chord progressions
That is very clever! thank you for the tip! 🙏😃
What use is the TP-7 here, may I ask? Why not just record it into your PC?
I use the TP-7 as a field recorder. Since this location aint close to my computer
@@Shimmery.mp3 Ah gotcha. Yeah. I use the TX-6 for that. Always wondering if the TP-7 has value for me.
It is a very nice recorder and a BEAUTIFUL machine. It looks sooo freaking cool! It adds some nice features to TX as well. Like how you can record all 6 inputs from TX6 and then recall them onto TX6 again. But of course it’s a expensive designer option. There are a lot good field recorders out there and you already have a workflow with TX6
Very nice! 👍🏻 If you change the key while resampling in the drum sampler the different parts will end up on the right key so you don’t have to browse for all the samples afterwards
That is very true if you have an empty track to use! But in this example i had used all the 8 tracks already(on purpose just to show it could still be done) :) thank you for the tip tho! I will remember that when i do this next time 🙏
@@Shimmery.mp3that’s true, I missed that you switched back to all 8 tracks playing there. But so a good workflow could be to have a drum sampler on track 8 that you could sample in to when the other 7 tracks are occupied and you need to free some tracks. It’s quite nice actually!
@ no worries bud! That is definatley a very good habit to create! Will be sure to do that if I feel the track has potential :) thank you for the tip!
impressive and surely useful. but now we are working with audio. I'm wondering if theres a way to do something similar with midi. lets say all 8 tracks use drum sampler and each track is dedicated to one sound for easier programming (elektron style) - now when you are happy with the beat, it would be awesome to combine all the midi in one track!
If you press one of the keys on the drum kit and then press the recordbutton while the key still pressed, it will “zoom in” on the one drum sound, so this feature makes drum programming pretty easy with all the sounds on 1 track.
@jantuitman Forgot about that! thx Does it "keep the zoom" when you change bar pages?
@ actually, it was a bit worse than I remembered it was when I tried it out. You have to press a trig, than press record while keeping the trig pressed, and then keeping the trig pressed. So, no relaxed cup of coffee in zoom mode, keep a finger on a key. But the good news: you can switch bars while doing this. You can even lengthen the pattern while doing this. It is not the holy grail ( no editing of step components for example), but it is a handy help to quickly place / inspect trigs while not getting confused too much
@@jantuitman thx for the in depth explanation. sounds like my "midi squash" or "midi resample" method would be nicer for dealing with intricate drum patterns.
You can use the "hold" player- to keep your sample playing, and make the track two bars. You can also press the first trigger, go the next bar and pres the last trigger on that bar to make it span two bars :)
That hold player trick is pretty slick actually! :O I didn’t get the other way to work. But will try again! Thank you so much for the tips 🍻
@@Shimmery.mp3 I think you are right,. I'm pretty sure I saw the holding across bars in a video, but it does not work now when I just tried it.
It feels like it SHOULD work. Probably ment to work like you say. Hopefully it’ll be added in a new FW. Still really like that Hold trick! Very clever! :)
@@Shimmery.mp3 Im thinking hold is perfect for chords. Or for a sustained base with legato!
Can you change the resolution on the sampler track to bring both bars onto 1 page, then use the first+last step trick?
How do you drag in your own sample of a house chord to the drive for example, make it mono, and name a preset patch with it?
You connect XY as an MTP to your computer and drag the sample in the samples folder. Then you can access it in the sample library. Will try to do an import vid when I’m feeling better from my cold 🫶
@@Shimmery.mp3 I figured all this out but there is one thing, there is only forward and reverse by holding shift. I don't see any other options like one shot, etc. So it loops when you hold down the key.
@antikytheramechanism7909 while holding shift try pressning the encoder that controls the fading of the loop points. It’s the second one on the right. If you press it twice it should say ”loop off”
@@Shimmery.mp3 Thank you! I seem to recall on OP-1 Field that I could see the markers for loop points, start, end, etc. Here they are black on top of black so you cant really see them to like with a pad set your loop point it is difficult to see.
I totally agree with that. They are really hard to see in the monochrome unfortunatley
Important question I thought all your drums could be on one track? Using track 1 as a 24 note drum kit and then having tracks 2-8 be melodic? Is this not possible?
Good question! For this example I wanted to split up the drums just so the point of the workflow would come across a bit better. But you can do all drums on one track just as you said! :)
@ lovely saving up for one
I think you’ll love it 🍻
you might want to process the drums as well - you can add much more character to your sound by using more than one drum track and dialing in the settings a bit. (And/Or you resample individual hits)
That is a very good point
Great video!
Thank you! So glad you like it :)
hopefully they come out with cool updates and notcompletely abandon the op1 field after the opxy release.
Yeah i really hope so too! ❤️
Great! Keep these coming bud
Thank you so much! Will try to make more. Just gotta get through this freakin cold 🤧
Great tutorial bud. Please do more tutorials on the xy. I have owned an op1 for quite some time and the xy looks to have a completely different workflow!
The power in that sampler is incredible!
It is great! Thanks for watching 🫶
Is the lemon there to signify cheap in build but expensive in price?
The lemon can be whatever you want it to be 🍋
Did not know about this one! Nice one
One of the reasons why I love this device is bc there’s always a new trick or ability that I didn’t know about ❤
Oh that is a nice hack ! Didn’t know ❤
thank you
Thanks for the awesome tip! I’m so bad with the tape, so I appreciate any help I can get.
Another Teen Engineering autist.
Keep these up! Owned the device since launch and wasn’t aware of this
Glad I could help :) will make some more 🍻
Good tips, but why should you start two different projects on one track, if the field supports multiple projects?
Well it’s not infinite projects and you could quickly find yourself needing to record a new part in an old project.
Good tip! Didn’t knew about shift+loop. I always turn the loop points with the knobs until it indicates it is on the start and end of the loop. Or, you go into tempo menu and change bpm until the markers line up 🤠 Thank you for the video!
Now you don’t have to do that anymore 🍻
Glad you like the video! Thanks for watching:)
Do you know how to lock playback to a specific bar? I want to record and sequence without looping the entire section. What the manual indicates doesn’t work for me, and I’m not sure if it’s a bug in my unit or if it’s just not designed to work that way. :(
Question; Do you still love to use op-1f after op-XY ? Please give honest answer :) I am thinking about to sell op-1 field to create a budget for op-Xy but I am wondering if I regret or not😊
Good question and I will be honest. I love the OP-1 field still. It’s a unique instrument and it is very powerful if you embrace the tape workflow. For me, that’s making a lot of ambient music, I love how ”free form” it can be. But i’m having small doubts that my love for OP-1 is a bit more nostalgia now after XY. I think XY has the potential to become an epic machine. But it’s a step sequencer at the end of the day. The free from and quirky stuff that OP-1 brings is still only in OP-1. Hope this helps a little bit 🙏
The real answer is get the XY and keep the OP-1
This is the way
I own a Yamaha Seqtrak (powerful sequencer that in workload looks simular to OP-XY) and recently bought an OP1 Field. I love the free form composing of the op1. It is a real instrument, like a piano or guitar with editing possibilities. The Seqtrak is really good in creating loops, programm digital music. I believe this is also the difference between the OP1 field and the OP XY. Would love e to own an XY as well as it looks much more easier to use then the Seqtrak and is more powerful.
nice keep these going :)
Thank you so much! Will do :) thanks for watching
That’s fine, except you still don’t have a lined up loop situation. I have an even better hack. After your sequence of loops has been recorded, and before you begin the next project with a different BPM, just record a quick snippet of your own voice, saying the BPM onto the tape track. So I do three loops at 111 BPM. Before I start my next project on the tape, I just tap the mic button, and record myself saying “111 BPM”. Now that’s efficient.
Hahaha 😂
use my voice? like a caveman?! 😜
@@Shimmery.mp3 it’s in keeping with the traditional analog flavor of the 4-track tape! If you were using a Tascam 424, you’d use your voice!
I totally get that and I agree that it’s a good solution as well. Just messing around 🫶
Classic solution!
Intresting
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching:)
Hi, perhaps an idea for another video. I'm used to adding samples into my OP-1 field, like an 808 drum kit. But I think this is not possible on the XY, or is there some way to add custom samples on the XY and create a custom drum kit like an 808 patch?
I touch upon it a little bit in this video actually. You can add your own samples to XY and build kits. I will try to make a quick video :) thanks for watching
Ah, so link would allow you to use it like those cheesy Italian arrangement keyboards. If you haven't used one, they are honestly very fun. Would probably be better to use a larger keyboard than the built in on in the XY. I'm sure you could set your transpose track to be something like a pad, play chords to a "rhythm track", and all of your background stuff would follow the chords you're playing. This is actually pretty useful, it can get old, but it's good for songwriting.
Yes you are correct! It would have been a better example if I’d used a pad 🙈
Love the fist pumping and the random lemon, too! "Refreshing"!
