The Vintage Newbie
Приєднався 28 жов 2022
My name is Vernon Smith and I started collecting records back in 1988, when I was a 14 year old punk rock skater boy. I continued to do so until 2005 when, being from New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina came and wiped out all my albums. When that happened, I said to myself: "Vernon Smith, you can't rebuild your record collection at age 30, that would be ridiculous!"
Well here I am at age 48, rebuilding my record collection. Ridiculous, right gang?!
Join me every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as I go through the albums I've re-collected so far and tell wild and zany stories that center around those bands and albums. I'll discuss why they're vital (Vityl, get it?! GET IT?!) to my new collection and even talk a little about the New Orleans punk rock scene of the 1990's. Crack open a bottle of Fruitopia, heat up some Bagel-Bites, and get ready to...♫ solve a mystery, or rewrite history, duck tales, woo-hoo ♫...well, maybe not that last part. Sorry.

Got a CD player that goes with the vintage stereo aesthetic. Will it be a good one? Or a great one?

I have the STAV-3400 love it hooked up to 2 Infinity SM-122s with replacement Pioneer 12" woofers..
theres no way...
Wonder if your guy has different colors LED's
The Realistic Minimus 7 speakers were designed to work very well with the Realistic STA-700 AM/FM STEREO RECEIVER. The STA-700 is a lower profile receiver in a black case!
I just picked up an Sl-D1 today for free! It's in perfect condition and the dust cover tabs aren't broken. I brought one new in the late 70s and it served me well for many years. I've always wanted another to add to my collection. Can't stop smiling right now!
Americans are so "showbiz" and wacky.... unlike my fellow Brits when they review hi-fi. Anyway, get yourself a pair of Teac LS-X8. They are almost exactly the same as the Minimus 7 and sound excellent. They are sleepers, so hurry up and get them while you can for cheap!
More videos please.
@@Brucinator68 Thanks! I have more coming soon!
Should have went with blue! But still look nice 👍🏻
Awesome great video, thanks for the info and explorations 👍🏾
@@chendochondocorpus6497 Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it! Do you have one of these turntables?
What do you know about the Realistic STA-117, & or the STA-2150? Thanks...
@@johnbeckham1483 Nothing at all, sorry. I’ve never had or heard either of them
@@TheVintageNewbie Thanks nonetheless. 2 stereo receivers that I recently purchased as they both are performing well!
@@johnbeckham1483 Awesome! The Shack put out some great gear! There are a couple of vintage Realistic groups on Facebook you could join where people know a lot about different pieces of stereo equipment
Funny video man. Thanks for all the information, been thinking about getting this model.
The Radio Shack circa 1977 Realistic STA-84 is both a solidly built & very aesthetically pleasing FM stereo receiver indeed! Thank you for a great review! The auto magic fm stereo tuning is pure magic!
@@johnbeckham1483 Thanks! Yeah I love 70’s Shack gear, I have an entire rack dedicated to Realistic equipment
Hay do these things take aux cable
@@redsultimate5820 nope just regular speaker wire
Didn't know bayou Dana Carvey collected vintage gear. Welcome to the club.
@@dandinhofer9240 ahahahaaha thanks!
The Realistic Minimus series speakers got rave reviews for their sound. The Minimus 7 and 11 speakers were favorably reviewed and by adding a good subwoofer you could have a swell system. Their T-70 speakers also got great reviews for cost/performance. They used a labyrinth design as opposed to porting for very good bass.
Led t10 7v ?
@@Josef-jj.p I’m not sure, I got them from Joseph Mirabella, projectblk86 on eBay. Met him on a vintage stereo Facebook group and he was highly recommended by everyone when it comes to LED’s. He’s super nice and always helpful.
Some of us were fortunate to grow up a bit earlier (the draft not withstanding) and shopped for audio during the 1970's/80's. Almost all my gear is original purchase (by me) during mid 1970's to early 80's. The hifi heyday. Some swell hifi stores (at least in NYC) were; Harvey's, Tech Hifi, Crazy Eddie's, Great Sounds, Lafayette Electronics, The Stereo Warehouse, Audio Graveyard (across from Trinity Church cemetery), The Wiz, Uncle Steve's and Churchill Audio. If you couldn't get a hifi discount, you weren't tryin' hard enough. Man-o-Manischewitz, those were the days.
@@martyjewell5683 That’s awesome! If I knew then what I know now, even though I was just a kid, I would’ve loaded up on vintage stereo gear and kept all my records (my records all got flooded in Katrina 20 years ago). I’ve heard of some of those shops even though I’m from New Orleans. I actually have a Hall & Oates record that still has its original price tag sticker from The Wiz. Nobody beats The Wiz!!
@@TheVintageNewbie- Katrina musta sucked. Poor bastards goin' thru that. Betcha it sidetracked lotsa lives. In 1975 my first hifi "component" system consisted of a Pioneer 15wpc receiver, BIC TT and KLH model 31 speakers. All for under $250. It was boss, at least until the hifi bug bit me. It's a swell hobby, I dig it. You got a nice collection there. The funkiest receiver I ever seen (saw?) was the Advent 300.
There is someone selling his personal d2 on reverb for $380 not sure if that's fair market value or not. But it's in perfect cosmetic and performance condition. Not sure if I'll pulp the trigger on it
@@bearded_wolverine3503 That seems a bit expensive, unless it has some super fancy cartridge and brand new stylus. On eBay they average around $200 plus shipping. Though I’m really hesitant about getting a turntable shipped. I’ve heard MANY horror stories about turntables getting busted up in shipping because they weren’t disassembled and packed properly
@TheVintageNewbie I agree, price is high and I absolutely agree that buying off ebay is a chance I don't want to take
@@bearded_wolverine3503 Yeah especially if you got a 1200 mk2 with a VM95ML for $325! (Just watched your video), I’d say that’s definitely the deal of the year!
When I was in college during the mid-70s these were ubiquitous in the dorms after the freshmen got rid of their GE Mustangs they brought from home. These were then hooked up to Harman-Kardon 330B receivers and Smaller Advents or Boston Acoustics speakers... those were the days😊! Jimmy from beautiful 😊bucolic 😮downtown Schnecksville, PA., sun 🌞 and fun 🎉capital of the world 😅
@@tiojimmy3425 I’d imagine quite a lot of them are still going strong too!
I don't have any (SACD's) or anything, BUT I do have a 24 carrot gold "Egeals Greatest Hits" CD. Would that be considered "hi quality sound"? I can tell it's real gold because you can actually see through it! 😆 I showed it in one of my videos. I use a Pioneer PD-10AE CD player btw. 👍🏻
@@chrisnunya7171 I’d consider ANY Eagles Greatest Hits album to be hi quality sound! Lol. 24 karat gold cd?! Is it like one of those “certified gold cuz it sold however many millions of copies” that they put in a frame?
Good price on that player. Nice shilver shiny shtuff you got shir. Oh btw my video froze at the beginning huh ? 😊
@@wrxfrontier6584 Yeah sorry about the crazy glitching at the beginning, must be my dial-up lol. Definitely couldn’t pass on $10, plus it’s always good to have a backup
Nice. I've always wanted a Technics turntable. But I'm totally happy with my U-Turn Custom. It was a learning curve for me as well. It's not automatic with anything! EXCEPT speed control because I paid extra for it. Other than that, all manual. I was used to all automatic because of the Audio-Technica LP60X-BT I was using. I hate to hear your running outta shit to talk about, but I understand. That's why my videos are totally random! 😆
@@chrisnunya7171 Thanks! Yeah I’d always wanted one too. I was glad I was able to find one for cheap. It kinda sucks to be running out of things to talk about but I’m also glad cuz it means I’m happy with what I’ve got and don’t have to keep hunting for more gear lol! Well, unless I find a pair of Optimus T-200 speakers for a good price, in which case I’m scooping them shits up with the quickness, haha
Thanks for joining the #tag! Fun video!
Thanks! I had a blast doing it!
Damn! Nobody in my friggin area sells shit like that on my Facebook marketplace! Here you are with 2 of'em & I'm sitting here reel to reeless! 🥺 Congrats, ol' buddy. And congratulations on the new "Star Trek" gig! 🖖🏻
@@chrisnunya7171 Thanks! This was about an hour and a half away from where I live lol. I’m actually down to 1 reel player, I ended up selling this one recently to a guy who wasn’t looking to record anything, he just wanted to play some old tapes his dad had recorded back when he was in ‘Nam. Thanks again, pretty psyched about Star Trek! Comes out in a week and a half! Definitely a dream come true ❤️
I like your realistic audio rack. Was that really from the shack or did you put the badge on it? I don't remember seeing it in a catalog. This was a fun video, I also rock the realistic gear here.
@@renderingrocks Hey! Yeah I think we’re in the same Realistic group! For the rack, that’s just a badge I got off eBay and slapped it onto a rack I had. I searched but as far as I know, RS never put out an actual Realistic rack
Uhmm really Realistic , I have several Realistic stereos which I also enjoy, and as for Kevin , Sky Labs I also enjoy his show as well but as for the jbl jubals I had a pair of them that I kept burning up tha tweeter , you know that 077 ring radiator, I smoked several of those tweeters, I just burnt them up and out I fried them , they sounded good till they started smoking
I love Realistic gear! Especially since most folks don’t like it you can still get some good pieces for great prices
Hey , I like your program and realistic view , uhmm
Hey bud, good to see ya again. That was a long vacation! Btw, I like your theme song, but ya might need to change it from "a year ago" to "a few years ago." 🤣 I saw Skylabs video too but he blew me away by saying he preferred STREAMING! 🥺 Glad your back old buddy.
Hey! Good to be back! I get the streaming thing, it’s more convenient and makes sense financially, but if money and space weren’t a factor, I’d do records all day.
Congrats on your artwork Vernon! 🖖vintage also starts with V.
@@wrxfrontier6584 Thanks so much! Hopefully folks will like it. V is one of the best letters, definitely in the top 26 haha
Just picked one up at a local thrift store for $2.99. Everything seems to work, but no sound. I guess it has to be hooked to external speakers. I didn't see any cords or speakers with it.
@@adjhunts811 Yeah it doesn’t have a speaker and needs to be connected to a receiver with red and white RCA cables. You won’t get any sound by just plugging speakers into it
@@TheVintageNewbie could i plug this into a phono preamp (schiit mani 2) which would connect to powered speakers (triangle borea br03) and be good to go? i've been looking all over the internet for some clarity on that, but i cant find an on point answer.
@@moshisdad666 I wouldn’t. A phono preamp amplifies a turntable quite a lot so plugging a tape deck into it (to my understanding) could overload it. It should be plugged into the Tape In or Aux jacks in the back of a receiver, either an older vintage receiver or a more modern A-V (audio video) receiver. Do you have either of those?
I have a Sony STR-DA3000ES receiver. I guess I could use this if I get speakers that are compatible with both
@@adjhunts811 oh okay cool. Yeah you should be able to plug it in. Get a pair of red and white RCA cables, plug one end into the “Preamp Out” on the tape deck and the other end into “Tape In” on the back of the receiver. And if you want to record onto a blank tape connect another red and white RCA cable from “Tape Out” on the receiver to “Aux In” on the back of the SCT-25 tape deck. I’m not sure if you can connect powered speakers into the back of that receiver (there are A LOT of jacks on the back of that receiver!) but if you can’t you should be able to plug them into the headphone jack on the front of the receiver, though you’ll need a 3.5mm to 6.35mm (1/4 inch) adapter
looks better from below...
Moral of the story is to buy the extended warranty.😂
You have bad luck. Mine is going strong after a year, I even upgraded the cartridge to the at-vm95e. Sounds excellent. I basically turned it into a poor man's Fluance RT81+
Cool, glad yours works! I hope it continues to do so.
A lot of the Optimus and BPC era stuff flies under the radar. I have the STAV-3250, which appears to be very close to my Kenwood KR-V127R (another hidden gem)
I have 10 Duals. Not the 1019. Love Dual
I had that same model that i purchased from Pony's in Japan... Loved that receiver... Until my mom sold it in a garage sale for 75 bucks... I was furious...There was nothing wrong with it... Let me know if you're interested in selling it...
@@garyjones2582 Oh man that sucks, sorry she sold it! Not sure if you’re near New Orleans but there is a similar receiver listed on Marketplace (Sansui Seven) for around $500
@@TheVintageNewbie ok.. thx for the heads up....
Subscribed! Love the sense of humor. Keep it up, Newb!
@@JRingo-vp5wp Thanks so much! I’m kinda running out of gear to talk about though haha. I’m glad you’re liking these :)
Most realistic products are collectable , I own a few pairs of Minimus 7 speakers they all work awesome for a small enclosure mostly to compete with Bose and other small speaker's.
Anybody saving a classic turntable is OK by me :).
Same here. Keep them out of the landfills
I own this model ...1971 an epic year in technology at the time , these were the transistor design s that sound like tubes and the reason the AUX is only lit is probably because of rf that comes from the lights and disconnects the line to the tuner which can bleed in if this weren't done this way , It's a killer amp when restored by recapping the unit with high end capacitor s like Mundorf MLytic filter capacitors and Duelund coupling + Audio Note and Elna Cerophyn s ...my Sansui Receiver model 7000 is a Dragon Slayer now
That’s awesome! I’ve heard there’s a rewiring thing to keep the dial lit up even when using Phono and/or Aux. I have no idea how to do it though, haha
how does it sound or you just buy receivers for the lights?
Yeah I just buy them for the lights. Receivers produce sound?!?!
Anyone have a schematic of this amp? My wife blew a channel and I'd like to try and fix it.
None to be found through google search as far as I can see.
2 years 🖕
2 years what?
@1:38 cracked me up lol
@@ricklapointe4722 oh hahaha yeah I forgot about that, glad it made you laugh!
Great video, man! One of my favorite abums, it’s awesome to listen to someone talking about it!
Thanks so much! Always great to meet another fan of this band and album
Thats a nice receiver. You said it was apart and your buddy gave up on it. Why was it apart? Did you repair parts of it?
Oh and when you put LED's in it, consider moving the lighting feed wire to the source voltage so the dial never turns off. You have to enjoy that face!
@@renderingrocksI have no idea how to move the lighting feed wire to the source wire. I wish I did so I could keep the face lit up all the time. As for why my buddy had it apart, I think it was just because one of the channels was cutting out. I’m guessing it’s because the selector switch needs to be cleaned (which I’ll do when I open it up to install the LED’s), I just plugged in to B Speakers and everything sounds great!
That's a shame you're running out of content ol' buddy, but I understand. The background in your videos have changed immensely since You started, so it all hasn't been for nothing! 😄 And your sense of humor is pretty in line with mine, so I've really enjoyed your videos...weather I'm into what you're talking about or not! I don't know shit about "Sansui" but I know the Skylabs guy loves'em! 👍🏻
Thanks! I still have a few more left to make, maybe I’ll do something afterwards, who knows? Yeah I didn’t know anything about Sansui either before getting this one, but now I get it!
