Yea, it is a lot harder than the original. But it's also more fun than the original, in my opinion.

RR AI has a low chance to click random move if nothing kills. If it didn’t see a guaranteed kill you just got unlucky on the random move selection. Think it’s like 10% that it clicks random, also has a random chance on its switch AI to stay in when it should swap to play to the whole idea of “predicting” the opponent.

So on my emulator I actually experimented by using multiple saves just incase a mistake was made, and radical red has proven to show your team has one possible path through boss battles, Like they will crit you if you swap into a bad pokemon which is also the same with you, also critting their pokemon if you out predict them.

if you teach Starmie Tbolt, Ice Beam, Surf, and Psychic, it can do super-effective damage to every Pokemon in the pokemon league with the exception of your rival's Alakazam. My last LeafGreen playthrough I did this and realized how busted Starmie was. And because of its speed and special it strikes first and strikes hard.

It's entirely possible that the AI on the Brendan fight was just cheating, same as with the Golduck on Citadark Isle in Heff's run of Pokemon XG, where it predicted that he would switch from a Water-type into his Salamence and clicked Ice Beam for seemingly no reason.
