    "7/16 12-point socket is the wrong tool for the job. An appropriately-sized (likely 3/16") 8-point socket is best, but even just an adjustable wrench would be better than using an oversized hex-head-drive tool on a square-head-drive fastener. Also, a warning about unloading any unbroken spring first might be warranted

    I have seen other videos where you need to reweigh the door with scales after you add insulation to the door. It says this will determine what spring to use. Is this true because of the added 14-15 lbs.

    Excellent, you’re definitely a pro, other channels are holding the tension by securing the torsion springs. No need for that. Just visegrip the tube, and tighten or loosen cable drum as needed. Having the Demo tube/springs/drums etc. proves you do it for a living. 👌

    Hi, I have a 6.5' tall by 16 foot wide WOODEN door that is old and quite heavy. Do you know how many turns for this type of door? Thank you!

    • @markgarcia2028
      @markgarcia2028 Місяць тому

      Hi, garage door professional here. Usually when doors are that heavy, almost all 16 ft doors will have 2 springs. 6.5 doesn't sound too common but the rule of thumb is 1 turn for every foot the door goes up. So for you I'd go to 7ft, so 7 turns at least, but I'd do 7.25 to 7.5 turns.

    My problem is, i have to step on the bottom of the garage door and apply maybe 40 lbs to get it to the floor and lock it there. And then when opening it, at about 5 feet up, it has spring tension holding it down. I dont know the history on it, like mismatched parts. But does it sound like the springs are to short? The door is 8' tall x 10' 2" wide. Any ideas?

    Can someone please enlighten me as to why my door keeps losing the cable on one side (the right hand side if you are facing the door from inside the garage) while the garage door is going down? This results in the door drooping on that side and bending tracks and brackets and wheels coming off the track. After getting everything back in shape now (for the 4th time!) I think I may see the issue. When the door is all of the way up, there is no tension on the cable anymore. Both sides lose their tension. But the right hand side is very loose. I know this should be self evident, but alas. Thank you for any advise you may offer.

    As an untrained viewer I would add that the spring coils here can really really hurt you. They hold more than their share of stored energy that is like a mouse trap if you start loosening bolts and you’re the mouse! They are uniquely deceptive in their hidden power. If you don’t own two (2) of these .5” rods of the proper length, proper tools, gloves, helmet, eye protection and some strength - CALL OUT A PRO. They are much cheaper than an ER visit , a painful one // or - at least get hold of the old geezer here for proper parts and another safety brief. Thank you for this video. //ji

    I ordered the spring on Amazon for $70 and followed the directions on this very simple video. You saved me a buttload of money! My single car garage door only had one spring on the left side, so it was pretty simple. My son and I had it knocked out in less than an hour. I can see how it could be dangerous, but it's just like anything else in life... Go slow and steady and use your head and all will be well.

      Please be careful, while it can save you money, please know that springs are engineered for TIPPT, not just any spring will work and not all the tools shown explain how properly used. Garage Doors kill people every year, typically from lack of knowledge and incorrect steps as well as incorrect wind. While it's not hard to do and doesn't require master level education.... it can go very bad very quickly. When in doubt always call a certified professional.

    • @loudroarYT
      @loudroarYT 3 місяці тому

      @@danielmcclenahan460 You are absolutely correct about that. I was aware of the dangers going into this project. I took all the precautions that I could, including staying away from the "danger zone" if the spring were to unwind uncontrollably. I did my due diligence, with researching the process, tools needed, and risks to be aware of. Luckily for me, My garage door uses 1 spring. I was able to complete the project in about 30 mins making sure to take my time.

    • @danielmcclenahan460
      @danielmcclenahan460 3 місяці тому

      @loudroarYT yup that's about right! It's not hard work but there are things we door on Garage Doors before we select a spring. But if you enjoyed the work the Garage Door Industry has kept me busy for about 18 years.
