Interesting video!
Thanks! You should try it sometime!
Shawn Graham, cool video dude
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the analysis. Not sure why it’s taken so long for your video to pop up on my screen. I guess it’s better late than never. Cheers!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed making it too!
Late ☺
Someone else observed that the guitar solo - 5:29 - uses a 'Phrygian' or classical-Spanish scale. It, the whole song actually, really reminds me of 90's Joe Satriani, for e.g. the album _The Extremist._
Sounds like Phrygian to me too. Songs like this and other instrumental songs they have done lead me to think they could do a tour like Satriani or Buckethead with just chop-heavy instrumentals.
Wonderful analysis--thanks!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Please subscribe!
I would be ok if they did a few songs with these longer, heavier guitar segments. Saiki would not have to sing constantly. Plus Kanami’s solos are always short.
Yes, that would be great! I did an analysis of "Onset" too. ua-cam.com/video/e4YO4ALGURw/v-deo.html
Great video! Very professional
Thanks!
Incredible, I was in Tokyo and planning to attend, but I gave up due to the heat and the crowd. Thank you for this video.
It was pretty hot! I had to make a hat for myself with a handkerchief and a piece of paper. Thanks for your comment!

A great in depth look at the genius of Band-Maid
Nice playing!
Such an exquisite performance & composition. Such a nice record in memory of Kloey & so beautifully done! <3
Thank you!
FINALLY!!!! Someone did this proper.....but that 10/8 section really cooked my noodle....3-3-2-2....Got It! Thanks SG
You're welcome! It took me a while to figure that part out!

I've always heard the 10/8 section called 5/4, which I guess is still technically correct.
Yes, that's right. That's the same number of beats, but I went with 10/8 so I could get groups of 3, 3, 2, 2.
@@shawngraham4155 Ahh, ok Thankee for explaining it. It had me confoozled there for a second.
Non musician BAND-MAID lover here. Thanks for the fascinating analysis!🤘🤩🤘

A masterful breakdown. I feel honored to be one of your first 100 subscribers!
Thanks!
I hope to be visting this area in Jan..why?..Because ..A. I will be in Tokyo to see BAND-MAID! and B. Part of the MV for BAND-MAID's "Dont Let Me Down" was filmed in Ueno Park....The path with the latterns to be precise...Miku is seen running in slow mo along the path....I hope to visit other sites where BAND-MAID MV's were filmed...like SOSHIDO temple.."Real Exsistance" MV..One of my favs.
I cannot say why...but Tokyo rain☔ feels...comforting?.....why is that I wonder?🤔🗾🙂
素晴らしい才能を持った 子たちですよ!!、、と。
Nice breakdown from a Maidiac & aficionado ! Of all the labels attached to Band Maid, prog rock usually isn’t one of them, but their instrumentals say otherwise. I found “Onset” impressive, especially live, and set a high standard, but “Without Holding Back” is next level. I grew up on great music from the 60s & 70s and Band Maid is on par with all of that music, currently they’re the best band going !
What impresses me the most about them is that they have a very wide range of musical styles. And yet she remains a Band Maid. Always...
I'm thinking I would like to do an analysis of "Onset."

@@shawngraham4155 Thank you! Just subscribed earlier so didn't think to look....any chance of From Now On breakdown? Don't Be Long?
Nice job. The more I listen to WHB, especially with a good breakdown, the more I realize just how distributed and interacting the parts are. But as always with Band-Maid, the individual lines exist for the song, never the ego.
If my discussion at the beginning is too slow for you, skip to 1:02 and see what I've done. Afterward, you can listen to my intro if you are want additional explanation.

I said "temple" several times when referring to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, but it is a shrine. Temples are Buddhist and shrines are Shinto.
Beautiful Temple! Thank you for sharing!

How much pressure are you using when sanding the strings? I'v just got a plain gut G + D and am wary of putting the right amount of pressure when sanding as to not use too much force that will damage the string. Great video as well its great to have some guidance on subjects like this :)
Hi George. Yes, you are correct to be wary of this process. Getting the lose parts of the string to lay down is important. You can also detach them and make it worse if you are not careful. As I'm sure you know, once it gets too far removed, it is unlikely you can save the string from ultimately breaking. I would start with very light pressure and slowly increase to se how the string reacts. Maybe not wrapping it around the string initially will help you to see what is going on more easily. Another important factor to consider is humidity. I made this video in a dry climate. If I am doing this in a more humid climate there is a tendency for the string material to be a bit more sticky or gummy. Then too much pressure causes the sandpaper to remove too much and damage the string. Since I've made this video, I decided that string maintenance should be done often. If I play for 3 hours in a situation where my hand will be perspiring, I find it a good idea to apply oil before I play and then again afterward. I have even oiled the strings lightly between sets. My understanding is that moisture will cause the strings to start the slow process of unravelling. The oil removes that and keep new moisture from getting in the string. I'd be interested to hear your observations on this topic. I find almost no information on how to maintain gut strings on the web.
@@shawngraham4155 Thanks so much Shawn, this really is useful and too right there is not enough info on the web on the this topic and there really should be! Also one thing I've been wondering is what oil to get/use. I've seen gut string oil for sale by both pirastro and Upton bass but I've also seen people on the web say they use olive or baby oil etc etc. What's your take on oil's and would you recommend the ones sold by the string manufacturers?
I use olive oil routinely because of it's availability and also because it lubricates the strings well. I also have some walnut oil that seems better for tacking down loose ends when the strings get a little frayed. I've never tried the other product available. I was under the impression that a nut oil would be good and since baby oil is more like a mineral oil so I have never tried it.
How frequently do you do this ? I do it when I feel it's rough or hairy. Sometimes it's every two days sometimes every two weeks. Could it be too much ? Any thought on olive oil vs almond oil ?
If I have a gig where my hands will be sweaty, I might do it before and then again after the gig. My observation is that there is not an upper limit on how often it can be done, but there is a lower limit. If I don't do it often enough, unraveling can occur. I've never used almond oil, but I have used walnut oil. My observation is that olive oil is good for lubricating the strings, but the walnut oil does better for binding the string together especially if there is any unravelling. Since I made the video I have been doing more frequent oil applications and less sanding. That's working pretty well.
@@shawngraham4155 Thanks for the answer!
will this work for violin
I've never done this on violin strings. I would cautiously approach doing this as the thin strings may cut easily. Let me know if you try it!
Nice tune and groove!
Do you need to oil covered gut strings? (Silver on gut)
No, you do not need to oil them. I used Pirastro Eudoxa for years with no problem. Here's a link to Pirastro's recommended maintenance: www.pirastro.com/public_pirastro/pages/en/Maintenance/
