I found a little toy plucked psaltery second hand in 2014 and fell in love. I've upgraded and expanded my instrument collection and now mostly play medieval style hognose psaltery, gusli (Belarusian folk psaltery), and hammered dulcimer.
Stella Splendens and Ad Mortem Festinamus at First Church Joplin, MO
I had the opportunity to play at the church I grew up in a couple of Sundays ago. I played two songs from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat: "Stella Splendes" and "Ad Mortem Festinamus." This is performed on my Songbird Warbler hammered dulcimer.

"Falalalan" from Cancionero de Uppsala, 1556 (Spanish) performed on gusli. I'm performing at Avalon Faire and absolutely loving it. If you happen to be near Kilgore Texas, come by and see me the next couple of weekends in April!
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence on gusli

The original lyrics to "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" go back possibly as far back as 3rd century Greek liturgy. The tune is the French Picardy Carol that dates to at least the 17th century. The melody and English translated lyrics were first combined in the 20th century by English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams. I'm playing on my Belarusian gusli made by Ales Chumakou. Quem Pastores Laudavere on gusli

"Quem Pastores Laudavere" is from the Hoenfurth Manuscript dated to 1410 and found in a German abbey by the same name. The language is Latin. It is about the shepherds praising Christ's birth, then the wise men, then how we should also praise him. I'm playing a Belarusian gusli made by Ales Chumakou. Check out his website at gusli.by.
Twelfth Night 1910 Silent Movie with Shakespearean Soundtrack

This is the final project for a Shakespeare class I took last semester. I decided to record a soundtrack using 16-17th century English tunes that Shakespeare may have known. Everything is played on a soprano hammered dulcimer made by Masterworks Dulcimers. My main source for music was "Shakespeare's Songbook" by Ross W Duffin (which is highly recommended for anyone interested musical references...
Orientis Partibus on Plucked Psaltery
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
Happy Epiphany! In Medieval France, the Epiphany celebration focused primarily on celebrating the donkey that carried Mary and Jesus to Egypt. The Medieval tune "Orientis Partibus" is about this story. This song eventually evolved into the Christmas carol, "The Friendly Beasts". This is a short and simple tune. I use it as an opportunity to show six simple Medieval style accompaniments in the l...
Carmina Burana 153 "Tempus Transit Geldium" on Gusli

"Tempus Transit Geldium" is #153 from the Carmina Burana manuscript from the 12th-13th century Germany. It is a nice song about falling in love in the springtime. This was my entry for the "Non-English" war point for the First Bardic War SCA event. The instrument I am playing is a Belarusian style Baltic psaltery (gusli) made by Ales Chumakou. Cuncti Simus Concanentes on plucked psaltery

"Cuncti Simus Concanentes" from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (14th century) with plucked psaltery and voice. I'm singing from memory, so I think I'm kinda making funny faces while trying to remember the lyrics, haha. I'm playing my hognosed psaltery made from a Music Maker's kit (harpkit.com).

Beautiful !!
hello! Is the thumb pick a poly or delrin material?
@@wilshawlynnstevens2980 I believe it's delrin
Bonus point 3 years later! Neat. Thanks for recording.
@@snowliondragon glad you enjoyed it.
Pure sound. Great arrangement.
I also want to thank you for the tremendous amount of research and work that you have done to bring this music back to life.
I wanted to add more information that you could use in your program. Andrew Lawrence -King says that psaltries are associated with King David, the composer of the Biblical Psalms. Second, Bibs Ekkel, the English authority on the Balalaika, recounts that records show that troubadours in old Russia were flogged and banished to the countryside for playing music for dancing. The Church frowned upon anyone having fun, especially at a drunken dance party. The only to play the happy upbeat songs was to give them very sober lyrics! This, the “happy death “ songs were preserved. Third, I have seen other artists pluck the hammered dulcimer. It gives another way to perform on that instrument. I am learning to play my treble hammered dulcimer and 15 string psaltrey. I was turned on to the paltry by your video on how to learn it by the piano. Thanks
These instruments deserve to be better known!
@@kathleenebsen2659 that's a big reason I decided to start performing. I enjoy exposing people to something they likely won't see otherwise.
hello what is the thickness of the strings please
@@ramil_valiev They are all .016" plain steel strings.
@@elizabethkrause1500 thank you so much
My son and I enjoy your music. I can't wait to see your performances again 🎉
Are you able to play larger venues with your lap Harp or do you have a different Harp? It sounds professional enough that you could use it in concert. I am learning the corded Zither and I also have a very small Harp like your playing. Thanks for the lesson.
This little psaltery is very quiet, so I would not play it for a larger venue without amplification. I have a larger hognosed psaltery you can see in some videos (the one with curved sides) that I perform with. It is tuned an octave lower than this instrument and is a louder although it is still pretty quiet. It works best for small indoor venues or with amplification.
Aaah, another one of those Russian Psalteries that they flooded the schools with. Not a bad-sounding instrument to teach kids on.
It does have a surprisingly nice sound.
A wonderful sound
Sorry I missed your live stream this weekend. Love your music!!❤
That's okay. The good thing is now you can rewatch it whenever you want.
I'm not familiar with this tune but I really like your arrangement. Are you still tuned in Cmaj? Joshua sells sheet music for this tune - not sure in what key or if I'm smart enough to figure it out on a small psaltery! LOL Thanks! PS I would love to have some MP3s of your small lap/psaltery tunes/arrangements. Very nice to listen to late in the evening.
Thanks! It's a simplified arrangement since my little 15 string psaltery is much more limited than Joshua Messick's huge dulcimer. Josh is an old friend of mine, and I kind of recorded this as a joke since this psaltery is so tiny in comparison. But it is such a lovely song. Josh actually recorded it again recently: ua-cam.com/video/6gnsuufEecA/v-deo.htmlsi=4N9ASWiQdvvvlT8i
As for tuning, my psaltery is tuned with G as the lowest note, then just up the scale but no sharps or flats. So Cmaj, but the range is G to G over two of octaves.
If you get one of these with it's song sheets that slide under the strings, you will be able to play the single line melody of the songs by following the Connect-The-Dots system they use. But you have to keep tuned to the key of G for the songs to sound right. Changing between the Keys of C and G only requires changing the tuning of 2 strings. Tune the F strings up to F sharp for the key of G. And all it's song sheets will work just fine. Tune these 2 strings back down to F for the Key of C. Which on these instruments is a very versatile Key to use. Especially if you take the time to learn how to read regular sheet music, or to play by ear. Invest this time and you will truly unlock the musical potential.of this sweet sounding instrument Also the short flat-metal tuning wrench that comes with this instrument is very hard to use. Make your life easier by getting a wrench sized for an Autoharp or Bowed Psaltery. It will fit better on the tuning pegs and the longer handle length will make it easier to fine tune each string's pitch. Personally I have two of these instruments. Keep one tuned to the Key of G, which I pull out with it's song sheets when I'm with people who claim they can't play any musical instruments, have no musical talent. Once they start to pluck the melody, I grab a flute or guitar, add some harmony or fingerstyle chord pattern accompaniment. Watch their face light up as they experience making music together. My other one is tuned to the Key of C, with the C and F strings color coded as this video describes, I use it for more creative and challenging musical moments, where I want to play more then just a single melody line on it..
That is beautiful ❤
Just beautiful. The sweetness and clarity of both voice and instrument. Thank you for posting. This deserves a wide audience.
Wonderful!
Simply wonderful! You have a great gift. I cannot wait until you put out a CD. It weas such a pleasure to meet you yesterday! The Crusader (medieval music nerd).
Thank you so much! It was a pleasure to meet you as well.
Fantastic.
This is beautiful I love the way you hold it too!
Thank you! It's a little awkward to hold this way, but I think it's cool to match the medieval iconography.
Gusli color matches your couch!😀
Haha, thanks for helping me coordinate! 🤣
I'd like to make another unboxing video...
Lovely
Anyone looking to buying one I have one for sale
How much do these cost
A quick Internet search for "lap harp" says they go for around $50 new, but you can often find them for even less second hand.
I've been doing a solo act at faires in Utah the past couple of years: mostly mountain dulcimer, percussion and voice. Sometimes with amplification, sometimes not. This is a really useful reference. Thanks!
Just found your channel, love it. "Ad Mortem Festinamus" is one of my favorite songs ever. Haven't felt ready to play it live yet. I have, however, performed "Stella Splendens" live (in fact I just posted a video of a run-through).

Hi Elizabeth if you are seeing this comment, this that was so wonderful thank you I will listen again shortly.May I ask are the entire strings all the same thickness/gauge ? What gauge is it ? I need to restring one I have here, Thank you. What tuning was your instrument in? For this lovely piece.
I use 0.016" strings for the entire instrument. I tune mine G to G (two octaves higher) just up the diatonic scale. I tune mine in the key of C (no sharps or flats), but you could easily sharpen or flatten certain strings for different keys. Not all psalteries are the same size, so I can't say what will exactly work for yours. My instrument is typical of a lot of small toy psalteries, so it may work for you. Let me know if you have other questions!
@@elizabethkrause1500 Thanks I did see the answers to my question on some of your other excellent videos.keep enjoying your playing.
One of my favorite musical peices performed in a uniquely lovely way. Thank you for sharing.
Wow. Lovely. Thank you very much for sharing!
Hello!! Where can I find music? What is the name of that book that you used? Is it for sale? Thanks!🌺
The book I reference in the video is "Early Period & Popular Dance Music" by Al Cofrin, and it is for sale: www.istanpitta.com/cds-books/book-early-period-popular-dance-music You can also get a lot of great Renaissance dance music for free by downloading the Pennsic Pile. It's a resource for SCA (a reenactment club) dance bands. Amoroso is in this book.
I also really like Al Cofrin's Medieval music collections that you can find on the same website. If you know the particular Medieval song you want to learn, you can typically find some modern transcription for free online. But the print books give you a good variety.
@@elizabethkrause1500 Thank you kindly for all this good information!! I will definitely look into these great resources!! I had bought our Music Maker for the kids about 25 years ago, and never thought that this could be a viable instrument!! I am so excited and very happy that I came across your video!! Once again, many thanks!!🌺🎵✨🎶🌷
Una belleza!!!! Hemos regalado a nuestro hijo de 3 años este instrumento ahora debo ver como se toca y afina para enseñarle. Y ver este video me emociona mucho. Una belleza todo lo que puede aprender
I know this video is from a few years back, but I wanted to say thank you. I’m going to be purchasing a lap harp this week. I have no musical abilities, but I want to play some music for my own enjoyment. This video was helpful, thank you.😊
I'm so happy you found my old video helpful. I wish you much joy with your new instrument. I have a recording from an online class I taught that may be helpful. It is more focused on Medieval music specifically. ua-cam.com/video/SsHLlisK7CQ/v-deo.htmlsi=DMjTwBAT1oMstq37
Beautiful
Do you teach easy lyre harp songs?
If you increase your microphone volume, the audio of your video will be audible.
The tiny kalimba is barely audible even when you are playing it! I just recorded this on a whim. It's just a cheap toy someone gave me.
Hello Elizabeth, I bought a Psaltery just like yours 3 years ago, but I don't know how to play it, could you tell me where can I buy a booklet guide to practice and learn?
I taught myself to play, but I know it is possible to buy cards that slide under the strings that tell you how to play using a follow the dots method. You might get results by searching for lap harp music. I have a beginning plucked psaltery video you can watch that may help that you can find on this channel.
@@elizabethkrause1500 ok Thank you Elizabeth I will look into it definitely
I’ve played legends of Zelda and I love heard that song before, albeit it was the chiptune version because it was on my Nintendo NES.
Well done. Did you add the alternating A/D bass notes, or is that from Al Cofin's transcription?
One of Al Cofrin's versions includes an alternating D/A throughout the song. I switched it to A/D because I don't have a lower D. The newer editions of Al's dance book only include the melody line.
One of my favorite songs ever .
It is a charming little song. Glad you enjoyed it.
Entrancing music.
Super sounds!
Where can I buy a pseltery like this one in the video? Thank you.
You can get one here: www.harpkit.com/hognose-psaltery You can also order a kit version if you would like to build it yourself.
@@elizabethkrause1500 Thank you. God bless.

Wonderful!
Very good introduction!
Too short. Not enough plucker psaltery content on youtube, thanks for this. The hognose really is quiet, much better suited for indoors.
Thank you. I hope to get a louder hognose psaltery at some point, but it is simple not a very loud instrument. It also doesn't help when you have bagpipes and ax throwing in the background, haha.
Nice! Did you have to have a mic somewhere for the psaltry or gusli?
No, I didn't use any amplification for this show since it was a small stage.
