Fixing Wonky Comb Part 1 #beekeeping
Today, I'm removing some wonky frames from the bottom deep and adding a new deep.
Because I neglected to wax coat the foundation, the bees have made "wonky comb" and several frames in the lower deep are in need of replacement; the goal is to keep the queen from laying in the wonky comb and allow the caped brood to hatch

Fixing Wonky Comb Part 2 #beekeeping
Переглядів 25Місяць тому
This is Part 2 of Fixing Wonky Comb. I'm basically reassembling the hive, and since I didn't see the queen in the deep, I wanted to inspect the honey supper. Unfortunately, the bees were tired of me, so I had to end short. I will go back next weekend and look again. #beekeeping #beehive #homesteading #honeybee

Bee Hive Inspection 04/16/2024
Переглядів 6322 місяці тому
Today I'm inspecting a hive to see if the bees have drawn out any supper frames. I installed the package in March, and I also recently installed 3 deep frames from a previous hive to help jump-start comb production; the supper was only added about 3 days ago, but I'm curious. I haven't observed any SHB yet, and my last mite check was good, with plenty of capped brood and freshly laid eggs, I'm ...

    There are all sorts of different blocks - they don't all weigh the same, by a long shot. You want some weight on there, so get a railroad tie, cut it to length, then lay the remainder of the tie on top of the first (cut to length) tie. Use a couple ratcheting straps to keep the tie from bouncing around. That railroad tie weighs a lot more than any lightweight blocks, more than two or three cement blocks.

    The spacing is incorrect because the outer tine sections are put in the wrong way around. 🙂🙃Due to this now the working width is also narrower. The outer tines should be close to the end pieces of the frame. Now there is like 4" empty gap.

    I cut a piece of thin rubber to size. Then heavier duty bungees to secure blocks. Easier to move and store

    If it was me, I'd get some bags of Quikrete and pour me a solid block of cement in that tray. Cinder blocks really aren't that heavy, and them bouncing around like that would drive me nuts.

    That tray is there to add weight. The manual for that shows either 150lbs or 200lbs depending on the model.

    Nice clean hive inspection and equipment. Good slow calm moves as you proceeded into your hive. Maybe a little to much smoke after removing the first medium and coaxing the bees down in the second. A little wonky cross comb on the first frame that needed to be scraped off. Careful in picking up your deep frames there out of the box unevenly. You saw how close that marked queen was near the right side end bar. You can sometimes squish her if she is on the wall side of the end bar. I like the cleaning of your top bars of extra wax also. Good overall inspection and video. Thanks and look forward to seeing more. 🐝

    Does this actually work as hay to support livestock?

    • @theflyingfarmer28
      @theflyingfarmer28 10 місяців тому

      I would lean towards yes because the hay is cut and dried before collecting it, if I had livestock I would not hesitate giving it to them. The conventional method is to collect the hay into a bail and bind it into a net for ease of transport. I’m working on using it in the garden for mulch.
