Is dsg dq200?
DQ200 is a DSG, a very problematic 7 speed version. DQ250 is what we put in here, 6 speed wet clutch, a proven trans.
straight to the point thanks man about to save me a headache lol
I bought a 2003 TDI alh Jetta 5-speed new when I was 21 years old I'm 43 now and I still own it and it has 215,000 mi on it, the alh is probably one of the best diesel engines Volkswagen ever made.
That's so cool. Couldn't agree more. Especially because recently I've been dealing with CP4 fuel pump failures on the later gen TDIs.
tryna find someone to install it is near impossible where i live ugh i want this done so bad
Came here just to see my car, but it was nowhere to be found😢
I felt bad, I couldn't get clips of everything and I missed a lot of cool stuff.
sucks but im here for the journey. I'm a new subscriber. I've got a 2020 S4 that I'm about to put a hybrid turbo on i'm just waiting for a few O rings and seals in the mail and I'm going to tear into a $40,000 cars engine.🥴 hopefully, I have better luck.🤞
Those new S4 engines after 2019 are excellent. That's exciting stuff, luckily it's all right up top!
going to use this video in my first VR6 build!!! My question is what is the DEEP fryer thingy you put all your parts in?
Yea just deep frying my engine parts! 🤣 It's an ultra sonic cleaner, you can get a small one that'll fit pistons and rods for around $100-150. I've tried a bunch of degreasers in it, and greyz off while the most expensive one, was my favorite because it works well and has a formula that minimally oxidizes the aluminium (compared to other degreasers). Be very careful when doing aluminum, you wanna do 30-60 seconds at a time to make sure you don't grey the aluminum too bad. Steel stuff you can leave in there as long as you want!
@@thirdgeargrind I didn’t know how else to describe it 🤣 and I love that you have your parts list and where you got it like thank you!
Ejectooo seattoo Cuuzz 😂
Whats a kilometer?
There is one thing you simply have to have when working on a friends car...a nice clean white t-shirt. 😂😂
Huge bummer...sorry bro
The startup was pretty unnerving and would be my guess as to what did the damage. That second startup in particular almost sounded like the motor bound up and stopped. I feel like it took a very long time to build oil pressure at idle speed. Now, usually no oil pressure at idle isn't the worst, since the bearing don't have much load there, but with a used engine (especially a motor like this where you'd expect it to be actually USED over its life) you really can't tell how worn stuff is already.
I've been eye balling one of these as my next project, after my 24v VR6 GTI is complete. Timing chains are the last thing. Love the channel.
I'll be selling mine in about 3 weeks, getting it through MOT first for the piece of mind if the new owner
Hopfilly it’s really simple job to fix 🙈😅
As you'll see in part 2, unfortunately it was FAR from it lol.
To my ear that doesn't sound as serious as rod knock. I always turn wrecker motors a couple times at the crank. You'll definitely feel if its toast. Shame its a really beautiful car. Are the high pressure fuel pumps good? Just got recommended this channel so I hadn't been following.(SUBBY)
After engine teardown it had spun the #1 rod bearing and every other rod bearing was toast. All the mains and everything else in the engine was mint. The original engine had it's failure after a carbon clean and a replacement hpfp at only 118,000km. I did swap the hpfps onto this new engine.
I like Your attention to detail your videos help me on my 1.8 all the time. I just want you to know that those were not rusty things you took off.
man I used to think Subaru was the king of unreliability and poor engineering....... apparently VW and Audi are the true kings of engineering disasters lol I still dream of having a audi tdi wagon.
Nah, subaru making same engine for 30 years and still failing, while vw comes up with new plafrotm every few years, some of them fails, some of them are bulletproof.
Well done! Please update with the list of parts(with part numbers??) :)
Done!
Curious on MPG Now?
This was interesting, I expected a larger improvement, but I think part of it is my commutes are long distance. I only noticed a 5% difference. If you're constantly in the city I would expect a 10% difference.
great job
wow
Glad to see someone else doing the swap and teaching others to do so I just want to mention if you have a really early model year car with the mk20 ABS/ESP unit the car wont go over 40mph or so due to the speed readings between the abs unit and tcu being incompatible. That would require you to replace the mk20 unit with a mk60 one which isn’t that big of a deal as the lines can be bent into shape if you’re careful , wiring consists of just swapping some pins around but the mk60 unit comes with either 2 pressure sensors and 2 esp sensors or 1 pressure sensor and 2 esp sensors but the best version has 1 pressure sensor and 1 esp sensor which combines the 2 that are known to go bad on occasion, the mk60 with 1 pressure sensor and 1 esp sensor is the best for ABS/ESP retrofits in older models as well since the wiring is the easiest. It also allows you to enable launch control in the tcu which is a whole lot of fun.
If anyone has any other questions don’t hesitate to ask, I’ve done a few of these swaps on 1.8t’s and tdi engines, even did a few VR’s
Brake booster and clock spring also needs swapped in this conversion? I have to do a MK20 to MK60 conversion on my newly acquired 99.5 GTI, would love more of your insight.

Hey, when you pull the crank like that, I take it you don't spin it until you've timed it again. Yeah?
@@dubCanuck1 You have to be very careful, this isn't an easy thing to do. Taking it out I had to spin the crank part way, and putting it in I had to connect to 2 connection rods first, spin it back to connect the rest. At TDC you can rotate a certain way a large amount before you have valve interference. I struggled with putting the crank back in as I had lost orientation. I ended up dropping the main caps and equal amount to allow me the clearance to spin it past rods that were getting stuck, and I had manually pushed some rods up and then back down.
Couple more things to think about . Upgrading fuel pump. Change out fuel filter for one that suits the engine and type. Aka FSI.. EVAP things can also be managed in a progressive way.
The fuel pump is an Audi A3 8P quattro pump, a pump for the returnless setup. The filter is already FSI, I didn't cover it well in this part 1. This was more of a fast and loose video of what I needed to accomplish to get it running and talk about the electrical. Part 2 will be more of a total sum of what you need to complete this swap.
@@thirdgeargrind I used a filter from a mk5 GTI 5.5 bar fuel filter. With rs4 in tank fuel pump mod.
awesome video 👏😁
cant wait for part 2
Good stuff bro, I’m in the process of converting my 18 Passat GT 3.6L from auto to manual using a 04 R32 transmission and fwd to AWD using a 14 cc 3.6l 4 motion I need some harnesses lol help 😳
Question I did the same swap I have to use the cam from the 2.8 and put it in the 3.2?
Depends. If your tuner is unable to make the mk5 cam/vvt function, yes, use the 2.8 cams, gears, vvt cambridge. If you have the mk5 engine, it is preferable to use those components if you can get the modified software to match. A vvt connector housing will need depinned on the 2.8 harness and repinned into a certain brown connector housing as well if you are retaining mk5 cams, gears, and cambridge. The cam position sensors are also different so use the respective ones.
@@thirdgeargrind thank you so much for the info
Love the VR6 content.
how much do these boras usually go for around your area? would love to come up to canada and scoop one up
Prices have varied from $7,000 (originally imported), to $10,000, to $16,000 cdn for heavily modified examples. The LHD ones have been increasingly harder to find.
Im building a 3.6 at the moment. So you say 60nm + 90 on the mains (is that R32 spec or all VR6 ?). I've been finding so much conflicting data out there. I'm doing a 3.6 and have found 22ftlb (30nm) + 90 + 90. Its probably very close (in terms of bolt stretch) but I still find the data discrepancy annoying. Especially considering I am new to these engines.
I noticed this as well. Try both, marking the bolts, and see where the final bolt angle of each spec shows up at. My spec is listed for 2.8 12v, 2.8 & 3.2 24v. Looks like 3.6 is different on paper but just like you mentioned, probably pretty similar.
@@thirdgeargrind New stretch bolts arrive this week. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Straight from VW repair manual is states, 30nm + 180 or 30nm + 90 + 90
@@Teasa617 Same in the old Bentley repair manual. But other sources tend to vary. When my new bolts arrive i'll do the 30NM and then try for 90 with the torque wrench set at 60 nm and see where it ticks.
Well I did the main bolt torque test today. All new 10.9 bolts, torqued to 30nm. Paint marked 0 degrees. Then set the torque wrench to 60nm (44ftlbs) and turned the first 4 bolts till it clicked. They all clicked off at about 45 degrees. I then turned them all to 90 degrees. Checked rotation, all good. Then began turning them all to 180 degrees while fiddling with the torque wrench. They were fairly consistently ticking off the torque wrench between 80-85nm (60-65ftlbs). Interesting, as that's pretty close to what I think a 10mm ARP 8740 bolt goes to. Also a bit scary for me as I'd never used a torque + yield bolt before, and my brain was imagining the bolt stretching while I turned it to the required angle. In summary this means that 30nm+180 seems to be about 1/8th of a turn less than 60nm +90. In the grand scheme of things its probably not a big deal. VW Part number 365801.
I got an ultrasonic to clean my 24v vr6 fuel injectors, did an amazing job
Be cautious with this, as sometimes the ultra sonic can destroy the internal solenoid. I've done this myself more than once unfortunately.
Awesome video
@thirdgeargrind8033 need links to where you purchase bottom end parts. bearings and thrust bearings.
is it a mk5 3.2 motor?
This was a BMX touareg code 3.2. I believe this one has the mk5 internals, the slightly lower comp pistons, the different exhaust cam and vvt system. We scored on an already rebuilt mk4 r32 cylinder head that sped up the rebuild process. We had mistakenly put the mk5 cam gear on for a second, realized this, and I retrieved the mk4 vvt stuff from the 2.8 24v to put on.
Thanks guys for making VR6 content and being relatable. Super fun videos of bros making garage builds. Shout out from Sacramento, CA
Woow, hopefully you removed the oil pan and cleaned the oil pump, in case you didn't you will have a big problem, as the pump is 100% clogged with the plastic guides pieces. I'm talking from my personal experience, as I've done this job on my Touareg, 3.2 engine, the guides were completely disintegrated like yours and the pump was clogged up with small pieces. I installed the brand new oil pump for piece of mind. If the pump not cleaned, the engine will starve on oil, and you will get low oil pressure warning.
@@dusanmaslarevic561 I am very aware of this problem, lucky for me these guys were just cracked and no large pieces were not located. Unfortunately a different story on a 3.6 that I bought from someone who told me they had done the chains and guides. They messed up timing the HPFP, which caused a noise that sounded like a spun rod bearing. Blessing in disguise. Low and behold I drop the oil pan and there's plastic absolutely everywhere. It was so bad that I pulled a main bearing to find plastic had filled the main bearing groove.

PWL is a fun show!
One of my favorite aspects of a VR-T is that the engine keeps all of it's character. The awesome induction and exhaust noise with turbo spooling as a cherry on top. I wish it was possible to cleanly put one into an s13.
Do you know where those 2 long bolts go?
