Has anyone had any luck getting one of these to send data to a computer over the network?
How have you found the SlimQ power supply? They've been on my list for a while but have read mixed reviews on them.
The 150W version don't seem to be good. Both of mine have failed after only being used at light loads. No problems with any others.
@@Elecami Good to know, the 150W version is the only one that interested me unfortunately. Most of my USB charging is done by a couple of YZXStudio chargers that are DC powered. Means I can power them with an external Meanwell PSU and they work brilliantly for around home or at work. The external PSU design isnt so great for travelling though, so still on the prowl for something that meets my standards for that. AllThingsOnePlace makes some really good, in depth reviews on USB chargers if that tickles your fancy. Real nerd stuff haha.
Sucks that the reverb g2 is gonna be discontinued. Its honestly my favorite headset with index controllers. Do you know if there is a work around so you still can use it after it gets bricked??
My favorite too in the same setup. I am sticking to Windows 10 as long as possible, WMR will stay working there. Which will be until about this time next year minimum. Then see what happens, if there is an extension to Windows 10 paid or otherwise, I will take that. Windows 11 is not fit for purpose and I removed it from my computers.
@@ElecamiAlso, what program do you use for face tracking for vrc with the g2 omnicept? Thinking of upgrading to an omnicept if I'll be able to continue using it after 2026
My M5 autofocus does not work. If I switch the lever from manual to auto nothing happens. Also if I hold the quick focus button the lens still won‘t turn. I looked inside and found out that the motor for autofocus doesn‘t even spin. Is the small motor just broken? Besides that everything works.
Probably the very tiny belt that goes from the motor to the gear box has gone bad. That is common now.
My Manual Service catalogue is missing could you please assist me with PDF copy
You can find it online: elektrotanya.com/panasonic_nv-730_sm.pdf/download.html Do google search.
Ah the good old days. Got mine out cleaned it works like a charm.

Good to hear.
Wonderful wonderful video. thank you
Thank you.
This is my dream channel. SO MANY TEARDOWNS
Good to hear glad you like the videos.
I noticed while you were taking this apart that you mentioned the capstan motor was an “open frame” motor. Now I took apart a Panasonic 1231r and it had the same kind of motor and I mean exactly the same except it had a driver board attached to it. I was experimenting with the board to try and power the motor and I made a short about it you can find on my channel but you can see it doesn’t really work. So I was wondering if you have any information about these types of motors or even better, that specific model.
You would need to have a look in the service manual and work out what power supplies and signals it needs to run.
@@Elecami ok thanks
These basic VCRs with mono audio and no HiFi stereo are not worth wasting time on, but if you are having fun that's all what matters.
These VCRs are good because they were made before things became cheap and nasty.
@@Elecami No, high end VCRs with good quality mechanics and electronics were still being made until the death of the format, they just weren't the average $20 mom and dad VCR.
Mid fix, during a drunken night 2months apparently I didn’t only destroy my monitor but my left knuckle, head of the control was disconnected from the base wouldn’t even turn on, got lucky because it was just a cable that got unplugged but it was very awkward to plug back in because I had to figure out how to dissemble the controller enough to plug it in. Ended up just muscling thru it to plug it in. TLDR I took off the top part with a knife cuz I didn’t have a screw driver, might have destroyed the joystick cuz that shit poped off with the top but at least now the controller turns on
Also I’m drunk rn too, will update if controller is fixed (ae I can dri k more cuz it will be social)
Hope you can get it sorted.
Regarding the automatic/no manual adjustments input voltage thingy: Not all switch mode supplies have an ability to work over this full range. It depends on the controller IC or scheme used for the duty cycle control of the transistors switching the signal on the primary side. That being said, pretty much every PSU out there with Active PFC will have this ability, since the active PFC works as a DC boost converter after the rectifier and as such, the primary side DC voltage is almost always the same regardless of the input voltage. What an absolute treat of a service manual though! "National" was always the same as Panasonic. They originally sold it under the National brand because Matsushita thought the Panasonic brand name wouldn't jive well in the US market. But as Panasonic did end up gaining traction they unified the two lines. They are the same machines, with a different name, for the purpose of sounding less foreign-made. :')
These power supplies are from before Active PFC was common. Often the Power supply that could operate at 110 or 220V would have a would have a Tirac or similar that would convert the rectifier into a voltage doubler when operating in 110V Mode. I did a video about these things.
@@Elecami good to know! Cheers.
very good teardown video very well spoken to
Thanks

Very interesting video, is your testing tape from germany? The channel logo looks familiar...
Yes, it is. I have a large amount of tapes from a German friend.
What is this problem
Is there a problem? Need more information.
Which gress u use for head?
I used Tamiya grease. it was mentioned in another comment here: " I put ATF III oil in there, grease only onto the trust plate, wrong oil causes motor to overheat and stop".
heyy bud i have a samsung qled 55 Q7 series i have been facing issues regarding the display , the technician told me to change the display but when i asked the samsung customer care they said the panel manufacturing for my perticular model is stopped they asked me to take 17% of my tv`s worth and submit the tv to them . ANY ADVICE FROM YOU?
I don't know if there is much you can do if the panel is no longer manufactured, other than try get lucky with second hand sale. Maybe find one with another part broken.
My ❤❤❤
Thanks
Hello! Any chance you'd be able to advise on a "white light" blank viewfinder problem? Couldn't find any similar cases online and was hoping you'd be able to advise! Many thanks!
Not sure what you mean by white light. Most problems in these cameras are caused by bad electrolytic capacitors.
@@Elecami Just from observing it's quite difficult for me to spot which ones best to replace just because there are so many. Would you have any recommendations?
@@benediktlaumann4116 The capacitors in the power supply circuits are most likely failed.
It Also Gave Me BSOD And It Gave Me Heart Attack When I Was Playing Roblox
Seems to happen when things are going well.
Thanks for the teardown. More complex than I thought it would be, or at least more miles of wire. And it's always nice to see a RIFA cap. My industry, railway signaling systems, used a lot them in the 70s and 80s. Never had a problem, but guess the rest of the world ended up hating them.
The PCB layout seems very sub optimal So many wires.
Kraus and Naimer switch! Mmmm 🤔
Good quality stuff. Interesting to see in such a product.
That was very interesting, have never seen one this big! A little scary that all of the electronics are mains referenced, I expected them to use some kind of isolated inverter.
Thanks. We'll take a look at some even bigger ones at some point :-)
HiFi stereo audio changed the experience of watching movies at home forever in the 80's. Though for a time you had to pick and choose hired movies that had the HiFi sound. If I recall correctly, the HiFi audio signal is recorded first, just before the video track is and the video track wipes out 80% of the HiFi signal on the tape immediately. Think of it like layers pushed into the tape. Then the HiFi heads have to recover the signal on playback. Due to the difference in frequency between the video and audio signals, the heads were unaware of each other's signals so the HiFi track did not affect non HiFi machines. The 850 ran pretty high back tension so they were hard on the HiFi heads compared to the later models. People used to record CD's onto HiFi VHS as it was next best thing at the time if you wanted a copy of a friend's disc.
I think it is the angle, azimuth? That makes the Hi-Fi Audio able to be read separately to the video even though they are recorded in the same area.
Thanks for the teardown, it's hard to express how far ahead this machine was compared to what else was around at the time. Just a marvel of flat motors and miniaturisation that had few known issues. And for a VHS deck, it had a great picture so they didn't cut corners. One thing I was told back in the day was to not rotate the hydrodynamic bearing backwards, only turn them in the direction of normal rotation, even when just cleaning the drum by hand. You will encounter that bearing in non-portable Nat/Pana VCR's that came with the later G and K mechanism, models with the prefix 'D', 'H', 'F', 'FS' and 'HS'. (PAL models)
Thanks. These are really nice machines.
Had one at our family home in Hornby in the 90s. Instant nostalgia from childhood.
Nice. Good memories.
damn, i need such a power supply, my machine shuts off after a few minutes of operation 😞
Is it the power supply causing that or some error? Maybe power supply capacitors are going bad.
@@Elecami hi, i think its the Power supply, Caps were changed including the high voltage cap. Unit shuts Off Display and Power LED dont lit. After a few minutes Off the grid, the machine works again for 2 minutes and shuts down again. Cables are checked ...
@@stefanjakob2594 Maybe can find another dead unit for cheap on eBay?
I remember sellling these new many many many years ago around 1987 or so
Nice. Good machines.
very similar to the nv 260 I still have stored somewhere, I loved that VCR in fact I bought 2 other units just for spares, unfortunately the spares are gone now. Mine is really worn has been used to death well into the 2000's to record sport events. Someday I hope I can restore it.
Keep an eye on the capacitors. Once they start leaking the PCB tracks can be damaged and difficult to repair.
Super bro
Thanks
I used to service fax machines a very long time ago (a horribly boring and repetitive job). The stuff for cleaning rubber rollers is called Rubber Rejuventor or Platen Cleaner. It was nasty smelling stuff though. If you get some, use gloves and good ventilation.
Ah the good stuff. Was not my imagination.
It's quite amazing that you have A VCR ROOM.
They have to go somewhere.
Maltiy system vcr ?
The version I have is not. Mine is PAL only.
Damn another furry into repairing old kit, that’s super cool :3
Good stuff :-)
The unit does RGB, S-Video and CVBS switching but no conversions between them. It's fixed architecture audio DSP is its real neat secret but you can't access it without a pc via USB using the manager software. Speaker relays are for muting, 70 volt output mode is activated in the software. Out of the box it runs stereo, low impedance out. Being a device from the 90's it has the appearance of a familiar analogue audio device from the front panel but with a decent DSP running inside, the faders are not passing audio, audio levels can be controlled remotely via RS232 or a remote potentiometer if you use the DB25 connector.
Very interesting device. Was worth grabbing it for a teardown.
Interesting choice of a Class D amplifier but a conventional linear power supply.
It was interesting to see that.
The X700's are next to indestructible. The only pain with them now is there are no USB drivers for Windows beyond Win7 when trying to configure it via the manager software.
It is annoying good hardware can't be used due to not supported software.
That squealing sound reminds me of when a Commodore 64 data cassette tape is played in an audio cassette player. And you've been scrapping VCRs for over 30 years? To be honest I thought you were much younger than that, like your early to mid 20s.
Been doing electronics things since I was very young. Pleading with my mother to take me to the TV / Video / Stereo Service centers to ask if they had any stuff they were throwing out.
I always thought it odd that these G7, G10 weren't using the 'G' deck mechanism which I think started at the NVG21 if I recall.
It is strange. The Real 'G' Mechanism starts at G20.
nice video!
Thanks

Thank you.
your package says 1800i and the intruction book says 1800u
Maybe something got mixed up.
refrigerator brand sir
Also make light switches.
National made absolutely great VHS gear in that era. The NV-180 portapak of that era was a wonder with all direct drive motors.
They do seem to have the nicest designed mechanisms.
In todays throw away world, can you imagine them even bothering writing such a comprehensive service manual. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Other than replaceable rubber components and the back-tension band, they were very reliable machines.
Thanks. They did put a lot of work into the service manual and the other training and service hints books.
Helo sir VEH 270 videohead is used in it. Which head can be used as an alternative?
I don't know what would be compatible, sorry.
Nice video. Can you post a video for National NV G30?
Yes, that will come soon once I get up to that model number.
My m5 doesn't record. Nonthing happens when I Push the button and sometimes it shuts down when I Push the eject button. Please help me 😊
Probably because the capacitors in the power supply circuits have gone bad. That is the most common problem these days.
