Hola! We're Gretchen and Tim and we are cruising on our Catalina 42 in the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific coast of Mexico. We're in our second season of cruising and are having a blast applying the lessons we learned during our first season--of which there were MANY. Welcome aboard!
Sailing to STUNNING Yelapa | S3:E15
We sail across Banderas Bay to visit a gem of a spot. Yelapa is a fishing village that can only be accessed via boat, donkey, or ATV. It's a challenge to get to, but oh so worth it!

Would be super useful for folks considering EV refits to know what happened here. Glad no people were seriously hurt.
It was a DIY refit using a Chevy Volt battery. That's a major no no. EV refits aren't inherently bad, but in our opinion, it's important to have an ABYC certified electrician consulting during the project. And, it's critical that boat owners spend the extra money to install marine grade lithium batteries. Using these used batteries from cars is a potentially fatal decision. First for the boat owner and their passengers. And then for all the other people near the boat when it goes up in flames and/or the first responders fighting the fire. Bottomline, don't do it if you can't afford to do it correctly.
How fun you guys are. It was a pleasure meeting you today in MINOCQUA. Your mom is awesome.
Hey hey, Steve! Great to meet you and hope to cross wakes again soon.
Great fun watching such silliness 🥳
Aw, thanks for coming along for the ride!
Keeping it real. You’re wallet 😢
I know! So inconvenient.
Didn’t realize Tim disliked boobies that much :)
😂 😂😂 I'm here for you bro😂😂😂❤🤗❤️🌞 funny as hell😂
Love it
Thanks!
We sure do love Banderas Bay, especially La cruz <3 ua-cam.com/video/dwVTs7cQw0Q/v-deo.htmlsi=lL0a89fVq7rAYEtn
I’m sure the go fund me will be successful . If it would bless Paul I have a FREE complete sailboat shell sitting in my yard think of it as a blank canvas for designing the interior the way you want. courtesy of my son in law who parked it to restore before abandoning the idea he has been looking for someone to love it back to its hay days. now if only someone would be interested in transporting it from Maryland to ? I’m going to pray for a trucker in the universe who is going your way to bring it to you ❤
Tim’s support of Gretchen physically taking action to get the bees off of your boat. 😂, good grief! Wish we could eat great food together right now!
😂😂 Hilarious. Not hilarious. Miss you guys. ❤
Hey guys. Just discovered your channel. We’re Ken and Candy and others on La Toys III, the C42 that was just a couple of boats from you in La Cruz. I love what you’ve done to your boat. I hope we can cross paths again. We’re on our way to Puerto Escondido where ours will be for the summer. Zipping along at about 4 kts, there will be plenty of time to watch some of your videos!
Hola, hola! Hoping your passage north is going well and that we can share an anchorage next season. 🤙
lithium batteries?
Yep. However not LifePO4 lithium batteries. He reported to the port captain that when he did the EV conversion, he installed lithium from a Chevy Volt.
@@gntsailing4389 Already this is even worse, anyway the insurances will comment on lithium batteries because usually if you have lithium batteries on board the associated risk increases, but to mount batteries from a battery designed for the car this means improvisation, car batteries are special designed to pack a lot of power and for this reason they have a cooling system included in the battery, if he took the batteries from the Chevy and did not provide them with proper cooling then they very likely went into thermal runaway
let him talk, you keep chatting over him.
Just like auto EV' s band from parking in a garage because of fire hazard. At least he wasn't offshore.
Sorry to see, but "EV conversion" is all you need to know.
Sorry , but this is the first one .
Not sure sure this issue was with doing an EV conversion (although I don't know anything about this particular conversion except that it was done in 2020 using Thunderstruck DIY conversion kit), but rather the use of lithium batteries that were not LiFePO4. It was reported to the port captain, by Paul, that the lithium onboard was from a Chevy Volt. From what I understand from our marine electrician that did our lithium install in 2020, that's a no-no.
Imagine a bad electrical fire in the middle of an ocean.
That goes in the "things that keep us up" at night bucket.
Yes. In a way, he was "lucky."
First, and foremost, whatever the ultimate cause, it's an absolute tragedy to see a sailor's home end like this. For what it might be worth, my condolences to Paul. If I may ask for clarity; Was his conversion to electric done with an EV battery? I heard it was from a Chevy Bolt EV... If so, it would be NMC type lithium-ion (as opposed to the safer LiFePO4 type li-ion). If it was, do you know if he kept the stock high-voltage BMS, or switched to a LV BMS? To be clear, I am absolutely not looking to point fingers; In all cases of accidents and tragedies, the best outcome to a bad situation is to learn and help prevent future tragedies. This is why I am trying to understand more about the build.
All great questions. We just met Paul as he was coming out of the water so really can't speak to his electrics or set up. We do hope he shares more about his conversion when he's ready as it's good for us all to understand and learn from. Your support and sensitivity is noted and we thank you!
An interview with Paul will really help decipher a lot.
Li Polymer and Li ion cells shouldnt reall be used on boats but are in loads of devices these are where the fires start... The safer types are Li Phoshate and are sometimes built into flood able boxes. The fact that the hull wasnt burnt to the water line indicates this wasnt a full blown lithium ion fire. Blade cells are safer than other formats. They can stand a nail or screwdriver being pushed through them. From UK boating and insurance industry investigations and report.. most fires start with secondary devices bought on board and charging or left in the sun and charging. So phones laptops power packs cameras ..electric water toys etc. In terms of EVs v ice powered vehicles your 80 times more likely to experience a fire in an ICE vehicle .. add in bottled gas and thats another massive risk. See the Bearfoot doctors whose 1 year old ICE Leopard went up in flames in the US whilst in the marina and took another Leopard with it both burned to the water line in minutes ... 😢 Conventional GRP and carbon fiber composites are basicly 🛢️ oil products.. they burn and produce toxic black smoke. The other thing i see is the time and the weather. This could have started in the solar system.. theres none of the exploding de gassing going on if the fire had started in the propulsion/house battery systems indeed the propulsion system would have been off so isolated. So the house system is where you would begin to look if it was a primary electrical fault. Its a horrid thing to happen but try not to assume its the batteries... When all the numbers and reports put them as a lower risk than historic systems. The other point is that new battery packs are being built with extinguisher loops built in ... Also Na based cells are already in the range of of Li phosphate cells but more temp tollerant esp in the cold .. they are safer cheaper and none toxic to make and in the event of a fire or sinking. Its Na ..salt 🧂 same as in sea water brine or found in the billions of tons in the US .. formerly used for glass making.
Great info! I suspect that you meant to post this comment on our 'Boats Burn FAST' episode, so if anyone is reading this comment, you might want to check that out...
And, it actually reignited and did burn to the waterline and then eventually sunk. I just don't have any pictures of that part...
@@gntsailing4389 Yes sorry my new phone and U tube don't seem to be playing nice... adds ending cause my typing in the field to vanish 🤷🏻🙄
Latest auto and custom packs come built in extinguisher loops in them .
It's a good update to these systems.
I love EVs.
Although Diesel is the safest I’m pretty sure similar accidents have happened
Lithium batteries , something those converting to electric propulsion need to take into account because you cannot put the fire out when they start burning.
This is not right for LiFePO4. This type of battery does not release oxygen. However, I have already heard of a case where an e-bike (different type of Li battery) caused a boat fire.
@@Ole-vu9yj Not all Lithium batteries are LiFeP04 types but the same remains true...once lithium ignites you cannot put it out by conventional means and moisture will set it off.
@@glenndavis479 Really? ua-cam.com/video/Qzt9RZ0FQyM/v-deo.html
@@glenndavis479 Yes, metal fires are difficult to extinguish. But a LiFePO4 is not a solid block of metal. All extinguishing methods suitable for electrical systems can be used and they work. As with all electrical fires, the risk of re-ignition is high as long as the energy source is not neutralized (even with lead acid batteries).

Darn, no insurance and your whole life is on the bottom of the sea.
Pretty much sums it up.
I'm sure insurance will cover it all.
Many boaters with older boats don't carry insurance beyond liability because it's hard to get and/or very expensive. So, sadly, no insurance coverage here.
Marine insurance is mostly a scam.
Insurance will find anything not to pay unfortunately.
I wouldn't bank on it . Certainly not where a conversion is involved !
Electric motor drive?
As reported, this boat had undergone an EV conversion.
I am going to say it. If it was supposed to happen, better there than during a passage.
Absolutely. As horrible as this situation is for Paul, there are so many ways it could have been worse. Where it happened is definitely one of those.
???s before you add to their coffers.
Ask away...
Commiserations to the owner/skipper (Paul). Can’t imagine the stress he’s under.
Your kindness means so much.
Very sorry for his loss, looks like Westsail 32.For sure an electrical fire,I think you mentioned it was electric powered. So it had a lot of batteries and a lot of voltage.
Yep.
What I want to know is which complete moron makes an outboard motor with a fuel valve that only operates the internal tank?
Awesome Baja footage! The marine life in the Sea of Cortez is amazing. Looking forward to your next video.
OMG! No kidding! It's a jewel for sure. Thanks for watching!
That was such a great hike with you two. It be cool to see it after a storm. Tim, you made me hungry!
Well, stick around there long enouigh... [insert wink here]
Loved the perfectly diced potatoes in your picadillo! We loved spending time with you waiting out the Norther in Isla San Francisco
A highlight of the season for us! Miss you guys...
I think we’ve enjoyed just about every one of those meals!
We bring the food and you bring the guitar and vino tinto!
We miss you!
Hahaha!! You guys crack me up.😂😂😂. Dang you didn’t even get to celebrate fixing the leak long enough to get to the shore.
This life! What a ride, huh?
Looking forward to you next video.
More to come!
Are cruising sailboats allowed to navigate the Suez Canal?
Yes. Some do.
I love the fact you guys are not afraid to show issues with this sport/lifestyle and how you handle them. Because #### happens! Your fellow Catalina 42' owner.
Aw, thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Probably something simple like a few specks of sand in the carb. Great video. I just found this channel so I will be getting caught up on the past three seasons, while I drive back-and-forth across United States. It’s refreshing to find a channel where the people remind me a lot of myself. Keep the videos coming and maybe I’ll see you down there one day.
Well, then, you must be very fun (lololol)! Glad you found us and happy to have you along for the ride...
After about our tenth such “discover the missing part already on the boat having already bought another” misadventure, we started a spreadsheet using Google Sheets (so it’s available to both of us on whatever phone, tablet or computer is at hand) with EVERYTHING that’s on the boat and where it is. We simply use the Find [and Replace] function to find things in the spreadsheet, rather than worrying about the order in which things are listed. As it happens, the order is where things are, for ease of data entry, rather than finding them (which the search function performs admirably). We have three columns for location, being split into general areas of the boat, eg bow cabin, main saloon, engine room, etc; the next column is where in that general location, eg locker under port aft saloon seat; and the third column is which box, bag, tub, etc the specific thing is in. I was looking under the seat at the nav station where my electrical stuff is stored the other day for my heat gun and having emptied everything out of it (including a few things I didn’t know we had) couldn’t find it, whereupon my dearly beloved suggested I look at the stowage spreadsheet, so I searched “heat gun” in the spreadsheet only to discover it had been put in the lazarette, aft port, in the LZ3 tub. I went straight there and there it was and I then remembered I had put it there because it was flammable and was with the other flammables, like outboard fuel! And it is easy to do one mouthful at a time if you simply pick a very specific place in the boat, and empty everything out of it and then catalogue it as you put it back in. You do a few of them a day and reward yourself with a beer or cocktail or cookie (or your partner rewards you with sex or something) and before too many days have passed, you’ve damn near catalogued the whole boat. 18 months later it remains a work in progress but it has saved us buying all sorts of spares we already had but couldn’t find. In fact I’d say it’s more of a marriage saver than the Senna intercom headsets we wear when anchoring! I’ve never done anything so organised in my whole life! If I’d done it on land I would have saved a fortune and probably been able to afford a much nicer boat. 😎 Another great video BTW.
Glad to see that you guys are underway. Looks like a nice cruising area!
Jim! I bet you'd love the Sea of Cortez. It's a pretty special place!
Finally someone who installed Jack lines correctly. The way everyone else does it only ensures that they will find the body when they find the boat
Yep, defiantly key to keep all bodies ON the boat rather than over the side. Thanks for watching!
Tim, just Googled “do men wear outfits”. The top hits are about whether men can wear dresses… just saying. Great episode. Loved that sail to PE… one of the best we’ve had this season.
Such a great start to the season!
Great episode OGs! See you soon!
We're headed your way!
Not far from the port there's Costco and wallmart.
Yep, that is one good thing about Cabo!
yes
We sure hope so!
Oh, thanks for the explication of differences between engineer and project manager. Just about right--but where're your pesky bureaucrats?
LOL! That would be the people who run the marinas...
"Mexico is sexico!" Classic!! 😜
We miss you, Rick!
Good stuff. Thanks and can't wait to see where you end up at when you head south !
Thanks for tuning in! More to come...
You say it like it’s a bad thing. 😂😂😇😚
