    I can't stand boots with waterproof membranes such as Gortex. GTX is hot, it makes your feet sweat so your feet end up wet anyway, and anytime you cross a stream or step in puddle, water goes into the boot anyway from the top then it can't escape because of the membrane and you are walking around in a puddle all day. I can't believe so many boots come with Gortex, it's the easiest way to ruin a good pair of boots.

    6:55 That tip about barely feeling te toe cap of the shoe is in contradiction with what every other fir guide say. Namely having a finger width of room between tip of toes and toe cap. While walking downhill your foot slides forward until instep is snugged against top of the shoe preventing it to slip further.

    what about someone who has could feet AND sweats a lot on their feet while doing activity and want to go to a colder place (~32ºF) ? Sorry for the specific question, but I've been struggling to find and answer for this. hahaha I had a pair of North Face Hedgehog (the original one) with darn tough midnight socks on some snow hikes. I didn't get snow in, but got some nasty purple toes with the cold. Since then I've been trying and testing. Some times it felt like it was just wind and temperature, but others felt like it was my own sweat inside of it making me colder. But also had knee deep snow hikes with it where everything was fine. I'm really lost about it and don't know if I should go for even warmer/more closed shows (more warm) or more ventilated ones (less sweat).

      You might want to try wearing a silk sock underneath your wool sock for winter hiking/camping like that. They say wool wicks but in my experience it doesn't( Or at least modern made wool socks). Silk does a better job getting moisture off your feet. Also for winter boots try to find a boot that has a removable liner. It might honestly be best if you don't wear socks at all in winter and let your boot keep your feet warm. Everyone is different so keep trying stuff till it feels right

      @@tommymaxey2665 Never heard about these silk linen. Any brand advise? And yeah... I was doing some research bc trying many things is very expensive, but it seems like there is no way out of it. I'm currently looking more into breathable trail runners with wool or waterproof (Sealskinz) socks and trying to think of a way to protect my feet from the wind in case it gets cold.

      For this purpose, and I have been dealing with the exact same issue you described, for my winter, hiking boots, I go waterproof, and I go a 1/2 size up and wear thicker socks. This has helped me tremendously with keeping my feet warm while still allowing them to breathe. The thicker socks provide the extra space needed to fill out the boots while keeping your feet warm while allowing them to breathe adequately.

    Excellent presentation sir! In fact one of the best i have heard on this subject!. So i want two boats...one a stable and light fishing and hunting boat for short paddles on lakes yet durable and higher initial stability. Which wenonah do you recommend? The second boat needs to be a tough beater boat for river hunting and maybe some camping. Thoughts? I currently have a 16 foot penobscot which I bought used for little money. I took the center thwarts out so that I could paddle down our lake, hunt a deer with my bow, and then haul the carcass back without having to stuff it under a darned thwart. Wish someone would build a boat like that...a pick up canoe.

    There was some very good information about what to look for in a boot. Identifying what kind of terrain, you are planning to use them in is also very important to selecting the boot as well ie climbing up the side of mountains. I didn't hear anything mentioned about wearing socks and/or a sock liner you plan to wear while hiking on the terrain you will be climbing. Also, there are lacing techniques that can be beneficial as well in trapping your heel back preventing your foot from sliding too far forward. When selecting my boots I also had the opportunity to stand on an artificial incline in the shop to encourage your foot to slide forward/backwards to see if the fit was good enough to prevent blackening of the toes. or blisters. The person I was working with actually was sent to a seminar specifically on how to fit hiking and mountaineering boots and this was really beneficial because the boots I selected were a perfect fit and comfortable with never a blister or even a hotspot.

    Great video. I would add that full leather Goodyear welted boots may have some initial heal slip. As the welt and flex points break in a natural curve will establish in the boot some and will “tighten” the fit somewhat. Toe room is key. A boot never stretches in length.

    Some beautiful canoes in this video, but here in the UK canoes are rare and expensive. these would probably go over £3000. I have a Perception kayak for now and can't justify the expense to change to a canoe.

      I think a kayak would generally be more suitable for the waters around the UK right? That’s just an assumption. Here in the US it seems like kayaks are also much more popular and common. I just went to a local outdoor supply store and they had dozens of kayaks but not one single canoe.

    You know it’s funny, I have a ton of extremely expensive gear (mainly traditional type) for month long expeditions, different gear for winter travel, fall and winter travel while hunting, etc. etc. so I got the Nova Craft Prospector 16’ in Tuff Stuff Expedition. It’s fantastic…..my point is that even with this gear which is incredible and I enjoy every minute on a trip, some of my most satisfying trips have been with a minimalist bushcraft setup. Those are the trips where I have lots of time leftover each day because of simplicity, where the full kit trips…..I WORK HARD! Those bushcraft simple escapades are when I wish I also had a restored Chestnut cedar/canvas about 14 or 15’ long.

    Personally, I favor Grumman or other high quality aluminum canoes, but.... Aluminum is the worst possible choice for rivers where you may run up against rocks or submerged roots and branches. Aluminum has a "sticky" property that tends to stop suddenly on objects, often with the high possiblity of a capsize. Also, they all have a "keel" that is actually the joining member for riveting the two halves together. It has a slowing effect on turning which may be a problem if you need a quick manuever. Other , better materials, such as a used Royalex canoe would be a far better choice for moderate to fast rivers because it has a slippery quality that does not hang up. And, they are made of a single sheet of material with no keel, although the bottom-of-the-line Colemans do have a ridge for stiffening. Those are just plastic. Royalex is the best used material for a river canoe. Very tough, good glide over objects, lots of used boats out there. For slow, flat rivers and lakes, bayous, sheltered inlets, or even good weather on open Sounds - Aluminum is no problem.

    Question: for river camping, and to minimize swamping, would say an old town sportsman 120 fishing kayak be better versus the discovery 119 hybrid or a traditional canoe I’m new, so I’m just trying to research as much as I can before I buy. Thanks

    • @CampfireKodiak
      @CampfireKodiak 6 місяців тому

      A fishing kayak is designed for flat water only. I've seen videos of people using the Discovery 119 on rivers and doing ok. It doesn't have much room for camping gear though. There is a reason people use 15-16 ft tandem canoes for solo camping trips. They need to cargo space for flotation bags and their gear.

    • @jeffahlm9097

      You should look into the Old Town Discovery 133k. I one and although it is a bit on the heavy side, it is very stable and has a manageable capacity of about 600lbs. It also has a full length keel so it tracks very well.

    I watched a video of a guy remodeling his canoe 🛶, it was similar in structure and design to the oldtown canoe with the seats being the width bracing and also the gunwall to floor bracing he didn’t like the seats were to uncomfortable so he removed them he had good ideas but completely ignorant of the fact that he had completely removed the structure in doing so which can distort the shape and performance. He constructed a couple of platforms he mounted deck swivel seats that you would see on a bass boat and just set them in the canoe without fastened , I wish you could give dos and don’ts for the guys that don’t understand that if you take out the structurally designed support of the gunwalls to floor you must somehow replace that when remodeling your canoe 🛶 a short video of the canoe structural bracing and purposes would probably do .
