    I have grown some burr oaks and valley oaks from acorns in pots but they only extist and do not flourish, is there some kind of fertilizer I should be using when they are tiny? I recently transfered some valley oaks to bigger pots, broke off some roots that had grown out the drain holes and one of these roots is starting to grow oak leaves, is this common?

    As someone whom planted trees, hundreds of trees. Planting them directly where you want them, works better then planting them in a container. For me. Also, the PH, and location can be quirky, so, you need to make sure the tree wants to be there. dont plant a swamp oak, on top of a mountain. Also, 40% peat? whoa. I've never seen anyone use that much peat moss. But, we also mix with local soil. So, we know our local soil's clay content, or, sand, etc.

    I collected a handful of acorns and took them home and did the float test on them and they all floated so I decided to put them in the fridge for a couple months anyways. When I took them out and germinated and all of them started growing.

    Thanks for posting! I collected 100 white oak acorns and have planted them all. Did not know they did not need stratified so the germination has been a little slower. Despite float testing all, nearly 2 months, there are only 3 seedlings popping up so am hoping that they will all come. But definitely slower than I anticipated. Patience is definitely required but so satisfying to know they will be safe from deer and wildlife and can be planted in time!

  • @edwinschwank2446

    Try using 2 year old dead fall leaves. Pile, let stand for a year and dig out the partially de-composed leaves at the very bottom of the pile after decomposing all summer, in place of peat moss. Packs well in pots and has lots of natural nutrients and good drainage. White oaks crop every year, and some like red have banner years and nearly none the next. I have put these oak seeds under a leaf pile and cover for winter, then uncover and put in pots with the root starting to grow. Putting pots OUT of direct sunlight is best as the summer sun can scorch the leaves. I usually start about 2 dozen each year and re-use the pots...put them out across my hunting property up north where oaks are scarce...knowing that I won't benefit from the crop myself, but someone will thank me some day.

Say like I started growing one in the spring an decided to keep it in the pot an not plant it that year an waited till the following spring to plant so where does it need to be stored that winter. I did a test run on my Champion Power Equipment 100520 8750-Watt DH Series Open Frame Inverter today. Number 1 problem is RFI. If you have AM Radios, then forget this generator. The RFI is no where near as low as my 1990 Honda EX4500 which does not interfere with my AM radios. This Champion 100520 will not be replacing my EX4500. It will remain a good higher wattage back up.

    I use Castrol Edge “Unlock Maximum Performance”. It has the same ACEA C5 standard called out for the approved Mobil 1 Dexos D. The difference is, Castrol didn’t pay the extra funds - to become an exclusive GM approved product.

    • @markshep03
      @markshep03 10 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. Castrol edge is a GTL based oil so it’s similar to the ACDelco oil. It’s really not comparable to the Mobil ESP oil. I often hear people say oil meets a spec but the company won’t pay for to be GM approved. Every major oil supplier that has an oil will get theirs approved because it opens up their sales. Proof is, if you look at the list of Dexos 1 oils they include every major supplier, including Castrol. Further proof, Castrol does have an approved oil for these trucks, it’s the Castrol edge turbo diesel. So if their standard edge meets the spec, it too would be listed as an approved product. www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexosd/index.html

      @thomaseynon6205 10 місяців тому

      @@markshep03 Thank you. I appreciate the reply. And. Please don’t take this as a an argument. I am genuinely curious. If the Castrol Edge “Unlock Maximum Performance” and the Mobil 1 Dexos D provide the exact same specs, what makes one better than the other? The particular oil I am mentioning mirrors the same standards of the X2 (ACEA C5, API, SP). Isn’t that all I am looking for?

    • @ZmannR2
      @ZmannR2 8 місяців тому

      You’re talking out of your ass. Castrol does have a Dexos-d oil it’s called “Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel” in the 0w-20 weight. Don’t buy a $70k truck and screw around with going against what GM recommends.

    • @davidporter7051

    I have had Blackstone analysis for three oil changes with OEM oil and filter (2020 LM2). Every time it comes back with over 1500 miles of oil protection left. I even checked the last two at 0% oil life reported by truck. At 32K nothing out of ordinary and over 1k miles of protection remaining (0% life/around 7k on oil). At this point I see no proof that I need to pay more for oil or filter or change oil before truck tells me. I will continue to have my oil analyzed every other oil change to keep eyes on the health of my engine. I started checking my oil after having some dealerships say change it at 10-20% oil life and others saying 0% because extra miles were already accounted for by engineers. I even got the same story from Lexus about their 10k miles oil change. So far 0% is right because my results are coming back good for my truck. They also said to check oil level regularly. If I develop an oil leak/burn oil I could run out of oil between oil changes. So do your own analysis because everyone uses their truck differently. A $45 test can save money on maintenance and engine repairs.

  • @Tony_Atk
    @Tony_Atk 11 місяців тому

    0w-20 is why you have "oil burning" issues, it's meant for "fuel economy" to please epa. Use 5w-30 after break-in and oil consumption will go away.

    • @markshep03
      @markshep03 11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! There are many of these trucks that don’t burn any oil. So if it was the oil only causing the issue it would happen to the all. There is a TSB to replace the valve cover on some of these because it causes the engine to burn oil.

    • @ZmannR2

      Wrong. Don’t change manufacturers recommended weight. Gale Banks has a video on this and says do NOT change the weight of oils.

    • @BrianNC81
      @BrianNC81 6 місяців тому

      @@ZmannR2 I agree I would stick with the 0w20 especially while under warranty. I don't think using a heavier weight oil to top off between oil changes would hurt anything since such a small amount isn't going to drastically impact the weight of the overall blend in the sump. It might actually restore some of the sheering if you top off with something like a 5w30 or a 0w40. If you're 0w20 sheered down to a 0w18, adding some 30 or 40 weight oil to the top off might restore some of the viscosity and bring it back closer to a 20w.

    Great video. Some information here contradicts what I've seen in other videos with respect to starting Bur Oaks (particularly related to preserving the tap root vs. starting in Rootmaker pots). But what you say makes sense--seems like the tap root is pretty important to these trees. Now, a question: Lots of videos on UA-cam on how to 'start' Bur Oaks from acorns. But need details on when, in the development cycle, is the best time to transfer them to the ground, and tips for ensuring they survive and thrive once transferred. Thanks!
