Many pets are diagnosed with hormonal disease every year. Dealing with hormonal diseases like diabetes, Cushing's or an overactive thyroid can be confusing. Dr Stijn Niessen (pronounced [stein] ) of the Royal Veterinary College in London (UK) tries to improve understanding by running endocrinology clinics in the hospital of the Royal Veterinary College, by running a laboratory investigating these diseases and by teaching veterinary endocrinology to students, vets, nurses and pet owners, including via UA-cam and Facebook. Blood glucose curve
Переглядів 44 тис.8 років тому
When a pet is diagnosed with diabetes, often insulin injections are necessary. In order to find out how much insulin to give, veterinarians can use a so-called blood glucose curve. Dr Stijn Niessen of the Royal Veterinary College London explains.
I subscribe to your channel press on the bell icon as well just came to find out more about somogyi effect I didn't find anything 😢
Ecxcellent thanx dr
Hello, after almost two months with Senvelgo, the glucose level in my cat's blood has dropped from an initial 580 mg/dL to 200 mg/dL. He used to drink a lot and now he's back to normal. He's 10 yrs old. We are monitoring the presence of chetones both in urine and blood and they seem to be fine. Since our vet has never treated any cat with Senvelgo before, we would like to get some advice from other vets with more experience. We were thinking of discontinuing Senvelgo for a month and see if the cat's glucose and chetone levels stabilize, what is your opinion? Just in case, is it advisable to suddenly stop or is it better to gradually reduce the dose of the medication? Thank you!
My cat had the same problem. I found the book 'Feline Acromegaly Managing and Overcoming' By Albert Costa on amazon very good advice for my cat and we managed much better. Thank you for this as well.
Do felines and humans produce the same exact HGH?
Healing health pharmacy 🎩
My cat was recently diagnosed and prescribed bexacat.. idk how there aren't more people talking about the difficulty of testing ketones. I am using the vet recommended monitor and I have had one successful test after going through about 20 strips. I assume more blood is actually required for this test than glucose.. because the absorbent pad on these is like 1 cm x 25 mm. And I just cannot for the life of me get enough blood to saturate the pad before it coagulates.
Hi doctor. What should be some good rates for fasting insulin curve, for 60 and 120 minutes , after getting 75gr of sugar ?
if you give 1 like jou can win every month 100 dollar
until he has 200k subs
fantastic this all check vin please.
I found Dr. Jones Ultimate Feline helped my cat. I tried the Gold stuff someone mentioned on here that’s suppose to regulate blood sugar, but that was a waste of money. I don’t get paid for endorsement here. This is actually what I found that worked, after so much investigation on reading labels and how to beat diabetes. She only gets on scoop a day, like directed. Again, quality food , lots of clean water and supplements. This is the only supplement I use.
Imagine testing a vaccine on a few mice ............
Hopefully, now 7 years later there will be more information. I just can't participate in Facebook.
There are some low carb kibble choices. In US, Young Again pet foods has a hydrolyzed pork product with zero carb. As always, some cats don't like it and even cats that do like it, get tired of it.
Thank you
Do you need a feline glucose meter
I am taking my cat to vet next week to be tested for diabetes. I checked with human, machine, and it says sugar is 382, 360,s. When I made appt, tech told me my machine will not give accurate reading. Hmmm? Tests glucose, so not sure why it would not be accurate. When I go to appt, I am taking my machine with me. I want to see blood from Same spot, at same exact time in office tested with my machine, and their, to see the difference for myself.
My dog was diagnosed at the end of 2015. She’s 16 and going strong. I remember watching this so much respect xx
I’ve been using this app since it came out! My dog has been diabetic for 8 years now. :)
Thank you! 🐱❤️💕🙏
Thanks for sharing the knowledge . In to your knowledge in which age is more likely for a cat to have DM due to acromegaly? For example, would you completely rule out acromegaly on a 14 year old cat with hyperglycemia? Thank you😊
All I can get are glucose peaks and valleys, no matter the dose size the reaction is always a rapid drop followed by a rapid increase, with zero stabilization. The dosage size only determines how far down the glucose will drop before bouncing back at the same rate. The monitor chart looks like an ekg.
Thank you so much
What would an ideal fructose figure be for a cat. Our cats fructose level is 600 vet says this is higher than it was at diagnosis three months ago. We have gone along with vet and tried changing food given amounts we have been advised to give. The outcome is we speak to someone they can refer us to the cost would be around 100 each time we spoke with them,-. And they would monitor various different things. The cost so far for the vets in three months is 2000. My worry is where does it end. We have suggested the blood test you mention, but the vet says she has only ever done this once, and he would have a puffy face and feet, which he hasn’t. So she didn’t feel there was much point in doing ,when you want the best for your pet, it’s so worrying when all things are suggested at silly costs and your getting nowhere. Our cat is so much better than he was, but it mainly seems the concern with fructose levels according to the vet. His current weight is 5,7 kg with gaining weight again. He is on an insulin called caninsulin the only one he has ever been given. The current vetinary food he has been put on is purina for obese cats., reason is vet says he may need more fibre in his diet.. he has also had purina for diabetic cats, which he didn’t really like. Any help or advise you could offer us would be wonderful, there does come a point when you just cannot keep throwing good money at it , if they don’t think it’s helping him. Look forward to any help and thanking you in advance. . It appears we only have so many days when we have to agree to this alternative consultation. Oh the cat is 7 years old.
I don't understand why a cat with diabetes, or pre-diabetes, would need more fibre! Fiber means carbohydrates. Cats are not made to process carbohydrates. This sounds like advice for a human person, not a cat person.
@@TraceyMush it seems that the high fibre food makes them feel fuller, without them eating as much.. I am very pleased to say he is doing really well at this time, he has 7,5 units of insulin twice a day. So far so good.. vets trips seem to have st long last levelled out. He has a blood test about every 6weeks at the mo and the vet seems happy things are in track. Took a long time getting here I must say. Just pleased we have a good pet insurance company, pet plan have been speedy paying out and always helpful if needed. So after a worrying start , I think we are jussi about there. Thank goodness, be it a long time sorting.
@@karentoynton8948 I'm glad your cat is doing well but it makes me quite doubtful when vets give instructions to cat owners that would more appropriately be given for humans with diabetes. Cats don't need added fibre.
@@TraceyMush well it’s supposed to make him fuller, without him having the food. I must say I think he is hungry at times but she was most strict in how much food he is allowed, he hasn’t been outside for ages, as he doesn’t really still jump , and I have been worried about him getting stuck somewhere and. It being able to get back. Also we have a few neighbours thst will feed him even when asked. It to. Older people should think he is a lovely cst, so I would have. O control on this one., but I agree with you to be honest. He is 2kg lighter than he was before he became poorly at diagnosis.
@@karentoynton8948 I understand it is supposed to make him feel more full. I was given the same advice about an overweight cat many years ago. Since then I've learned more about what cats are supposed to eat and what they shouldn't eat. I suggest you keep doing what you're doing and looking it up online. Do you watch Jackson Galaxy? He has a series on food for cats. Like many others he feels that cats shouldn't be getting kibble, vet approved or not.
The vet gave my cat a shot of steroids after that she developed diabetes. I had to give her insulin for about 4 months then she went back to normal no more insulin...beware of steroids!!
Hi from Brazil, I have a cat with low frustosamine(110) and fatty blood readings. According to his vet, it is all fine but my cat is loosing muscle(very visible). Should I worry and get a second opinion? Thanks.
Can we just use the urine testing strips to monitor at home?
Misleading title, should not include "dogs", if you have no solution for dogs
Apparently you didn't understand the video. According to this vet, dogs develop type 1 diabetes - their beta cells have been destroyed by their immune system. They can't go into remission because they are unable to produce insulin themselves. Cats TEND to be type 2, though not all. Type 2 is insulin resistance meaning they produce enough insulin but their body is not absorbing it. That is why diet change helps them. My cat has type 2 as a result of steroids. My sister's cat had type 1 due to pancreatic damage.
What happened to this channel and this doctor?
Nice video, I was scanning my sensor before with reader. For the last few months, I have been using Nightrider cgm with my Libre which helps me to monitor glucose readings on phone screen without needing to scan. it's great!
Thank you that was easy to understand! I haven’t done the blood draw yet... I am not looking forward to doing it every two hrs. I have the two insulin shots down pat.
Thank you. I have recently begun home-testing and this is quite helpful with my learning curve.
My rescue dog wasn't spayed and she has diabetes due to that. Now I wanna get her spayed but the doc says we have to get her sugars under control first. Which fluctuates a lot especially during heat and the time around that. It spikes to above 400-500 inspite of giving her usual insulin dose, so I have to give her more and more during those days. I read spaying may help with her type of diabetes. Please advise.
I only trust and recommend Dr Igudia on UA-cam for Diabetes cure because I have used his herbs medication and it works.
So it doesn't actually make them larger like in humans?
It does after a while, like if you leave it untreated.
Love the speeding ticket analogy !
My cat is suspected to have that. We are in the US. Where can we send the bloodwork for testing?
Did you test your cat? I hear that Michigan state University will test for Acromegaly.
will the curve go down and start back up in a 12 hour cycle. I feed and inject insulin twice a day.
Each cat is different. They won't all actually meet their "nadir" or most effective point of BG reduction from an insulin injection at the same time in the 12 hour cycle. That is why its a good idea to create curve so you know how your pet reacts to the insulin. I encourage you to do home testing as it gives you a truer picture as to the actual BG reading. Often cats in the vet for a curve can experience high levels of stress and push their BG readings much higher than at home which can result in an inaccurate or too high of an insulin dose. I would encourage you to test at home, do a curve through a 12 hr cycle and then consult with your vet regarding insulin dosage. Dosage changes should be done in small increments like 1/4 to 1/2 unit at a time and then allow you pet 3 to 5 days to adjust to it before changing dosage again...unless of course they go way low or hypoglycemic! Remember that a high BG reading isn't good but too low hypoglycemia can kill your pet! Make sure you are feeding wet, low carb food and no dry! And if you can (except when doing a curve) try to feed 3 to 5 times a day. For more info there is a free website : www.felinediabetes.com
Such an interesting vid. My pup Hermie was dx w type 1 almost a year ago. He's 12yrs now. SO hard regulating his glucose level to be under 200. Months & months of weekly curves, as we climbed up the insulin. He was around 600-800 for first couple months. This 39pnd pup is now on 33 units of Novolin twice a day. Now he's around 130. My little buddy is also suffering from slipped disc & spinal problems. Reiki has helped. Thank you so much for this informative video. Please make more🙂 I wish this vid had mentioned dogs & remission from diabetes. Does anyone know if it's even possible, like cats?

I was cured of Diabetes with the use of natural herbs. I love herbs so much. Sometimes, injection and drugs are just a waste of time. I was cured 8months ago but i had to wait for some months and did so many tests during this period to confirm that i am truly cured. I suffered from Diabetes for 2years, but with the help of Dr Eguabor herbal medicines,i was cured within some few weeks of drinking the herbs he sent to me through courier delivery service. This same doctor also cured my Aunty from herpes. As soon as i heard she had herpes,i referred her to the doctor and she was cured after drinking his herbs.I have since then referred about 4 persons and they were all cured from their various illnesses. Have you tried herbs before?. You have spent so much money on drugs, injections, etc and yet you have no good result to show for it. Dr Eguabor is a herbalist doctor,i believe he can help you if you can follow his instructions and drink his natural herbs. But why is my dog's glucose lowest before eating and insulin administration and raises during the day?? Then comes back down before meals. It is like a mountain or upside down curve... PLEASE help!!!
It's called a mountain curve. Do you test at home? Mine would have a smile curve at the vet, but mountain at home. Mountain was his actual lifestyle.
Food helps with maintaining levels. Long time without can cause levels to drop. The goal is to keep a healthy level. This guy is pretty accurate with learning your pets levels on a daily level and determining when they are falling into the danger zone so you can better manage them at home.

Why doesnt he use a pen that works If you dont do the little things how can u be trusted in the big
Maybe next time he'll check his pen ahead of time, And provide a back-up just in case! To be fair, you'd have to have ESP to know ahead of time if your pen will run out, during any specific 5.40 minute period of time. 🙂

My cat beat it. I don’t give her insulin anymore. I’m very careful tho. I hope it’s forever.
thats great! after how long did she achieve remission?
How long was your cat diabetic for? I found a stray and I just spent so much money and I dont know if I can keep her and afford that lifestyle for her and would hate to surrender her to a shelter. I feel not that many people want to adopt a diabetic cat.
My cat was diagnosed in December and be March I was not giving her insulting. Took a lot of time and patience. You have to change her/ his diet to wet food only, feed them every 12 hours and give a good supplement. I had to change her food just this month because dm diets is actually bad in The long run. Not too much protein. Good can food with quality protein and lots of hydration.

Well explained, thank you so much for sharing!
Very interesting and useful. Can't we all get together and buy the good doctor a new white board marker?
hunny c Loved your presentation! So full of good info! My 4 yr old cat just got diabetes diagnosis. His urinary and water intake symptoms started coincidentally with horrible disruptive construction to replace all our pipes in the home( so he stayed under the bed for 2 weeks! ). We are 70 somethings and the house is pretty quiet normally. He is not obese and his symptoms are about gone (his intake is ⅞ to 1 ¼ cup a day- monitored for a week). We are thinking about stress-induced hyperglycemia as an alternative diagnosis and wondered if he should have a fructosamine test now? Vet says not possible but Cornel and Merck Vet Manual say yes. How long do we wait to do it to allow for stress to recede? He's had 2 blood glucose tests- 450, then after 2 wks of DM food it was 375. He never had blood glucose tested before these symptoms. Can we safely wait on insulin and try diet and then retest? Your timely answers would be such a help. Contractictions everywhere and we are stumped! Keep up the good work! Hunny
No mention whatsoever of the NORMAL RANGE, high/low, of glucose level in a dog. Disappointing.
