Why is there a Hunger Games Theme Park?
Strange things did happen here…
I can’t stop thinking about The Hunger Games theme park land. In this video essay I deep dive into what makes up this bizarre place and also answer the key question: why? May the odds be ever in my favour…

The Best Theme Park You've Never Heard Of
Переглядів 7 тис.8 місяців тому
What's a theme park, anyway... Wake The Tiger is an immersive “amazement park” in Bristol. In this bonus episode of Mike From The Party I review the park and dive into why I think it’s great, whether I think it’s a theme park, and if that question even matters…. Efteling's Dreamy, Dark Ride Masterpiece
Переглядів 46 тис.8 місяців тому
Every time I mispronounce a Dutch word, a fairy dies. I’ve not stopped thinking about “Droomvlucht”, a flying dark ride at the Efteling since I rode it for the first time this year. Let’s deep dive into what makes it special in this video essay 4 times longer than the length of the ride itself. Come join the afterparty: Instagram ► mikefromtheparty Twitter ► MikeFromT...

Sivako! I went to Disney World and rode the Avatar ride ‘Flight of Passage’…. and it made me cry. Here in this video essay, I spend too long analysing the ride to try and figure out why. Why was there a Potato Chip Theme Park?
Переглядів 54 тис.Рік тому
What’s in a name? I present a deep dive nobody asked for into the Irish crisp (potato chip) theme park: ‘Tayto Park’. Tayto is an Irish institution and for years I’ve been fascinated that there was a theme park based on it. My obsession reached new heights when in February 2022 they announced the park would be changing its name, prompting national outrage. But why is it happening? Why does it m...
It's A Small World is about the Cold War.
Переглядів 25 тис.Рік тому
Why are you booing me I’m right. Disneyland’s “it’s a small world” holds a special place in my heart. I also think it's about the Cold War. Here I dive into the cultural context it was created within, the design principles behind it, and how the fear of nuclear weapons and atomic war played a role in the creation of this unique and wonderful ride. The title might seem like a bit of a stretch, b...
Was this privated? Why did I never see this? Today's a good day 💕
It's been public all this time! Glad you found it and hope you enjoyed it :)
I love campy things.
Downvoted cus the wheel
FUUUUUUCK THE WHEEL ❤Love you DK
Great video, but you missed one aspect of the ride. Besides visuals and music. Droomvlucht also has a scent experience. When you enter the forest for the first time, you can smell eucalyptus and flowers. Ton knew that when we are sleeping most of our senses are turned off. Our eyes are closed and we basically can't hear that well. Only our nose is still working and even stronger compared to when we are awake. (For example it's our nose that warns us when there is a fire, when we are asleep.) That's why he chose the sharp mix of Eucalyptus en sweet flowers for the ride. Two years ago I got to make and design the packaging of the scent sticks and roomsprays they now sell as merchandise in the gift shop. They gave me a detailed explanation about what the scent stood for and why Ton chose these scents for the ride. It was very fascinating.
Love this!! Thank you for sharing :)
@@MikeFromThePartyThanks! Fata Morgana also has a nice story about the scent used in the ride. In Fata Morgana they use the scent of fabric softener. When Ton van der Ven visited Morocco when he did research for the ride. There where shops selling expensive clothes to the rich. In the back alley they washed the fabric and used fabric softener. Ton brought back that scent and made it into a perfume. Because only rich people could afford these clothes. You can only smell that scent in the room with the Sultan and the treasure room with the Djinn.
Beautifully laid out video essay!! I came off Flight of Passage feeling breathless and awestruck the one time I got to ride it, and I attributed the powerful weightiness I felt in my chest in the moments after to sheer awe - but I think you're right, there's also a complex, wistful emotion that I didn't even realize was also at play. I don't know that I'd call it grief - perhaps "longing"? Looking back, I think it felt almost exactly like hugging a family member goodbye knowing it will be months before I see them again, or having a nice meal in the final hour of a best-in-my-lifetime vacation knowing it's about to end and the next stop is the airport security line. Or maybe I'm just ignorant and longing is merely an element of grief? Somehow it felt like whatever sadness I was feeling was tinged in more than a little bit of happy contentment - a journey well traveled, even if it's ending. Found your channel through your appearance on Watcher Podcasts' Carousel of Progress episode, and I'm so glad I did!
This is such a lovely comment, thank you for sharing!
@@MikeFromTheParty Thanks for your kind words! It was only because of your video that, five years after I rode it, I thought harder into what I was feeling than "obviously breathtaking because it's awesome".
I’m an American Irish dancer and we are all obsessed with taytos they sell them at competitions and where I dance. When I say we’re obsessed my friends got gifted a box of them for Christmas lol
I can’t believe you made me remember the rebel remix against my will
I think the key thing that a lot of people forget is horror IS camp, it’s entertainment, it’s not meant to be serious. And the art of scare attractions is again the entertainment factor not that it’s meant to genuinely frighten you, although it does for some. So I agree, Saw the Ride is camp but so is the film and so are all horror films.
I rode it twice, and I’m a huge huge fan of the movies, it made me so happy and joyful. And the world that the ride and movies immerse you in is simply amazing and beautiful!
The district 12 musical group wouldn’t be super out of place given that District 12 is home to the Covey in TBOSAS
[SPOILERS FOR WAKE THE TIGER] I just went to Wake the Tiger for the first time yesterday and I really liked it! I think it really succeeded as a themed experience and I felt like I knew what to expect from watching this video as I think it describes it well and a lot better than the actual marketing. I didn't expect live actors which really impressed me for the most part, there were only three live actors in the main section when I went (a Saturday in June). Two which were roaming and were partially in character and seemed to be doing other jobs as well as acting and one stationary actor in the secret library area who was entirely in character. I talked to each of the actors about certain things through out mostly asking about themselves and the world and found that to be the most rewarding part of the experience. If there were more characters I would of liked to met more characters specifically from each of the guilds. I also don't think Wake the Tiger would need lots of actors as there as a lot to do but I think it would help the world feel a little more alive. I think I must have missed the quiz to join a guild at the end, I'm not sure if this might have been removed with the expansion now open. I felt the expansion was a bit of a downgrade from the main experience, It had some really interesting set pieces, specifically the plane room, but I felt it fell short in a few places (I'm also not sure if its entirely finished as there were some rooms closed off). There was a main hall with a large projection mapped face on it which felt like the centre of the expansion and rooms surrounding it with more abstract things inside. I don't think the expansion captured the same magic as the main experience mostly with the really modern aesthetic which in the main experience in flows between more natural environments and abstract and modern areas more seamlessly. I didn't like the use of AI art in Wake the Tiger I felt like it really took me out of the world and could have been replaced with some other effects especially as it was mostly just used on small screens around the experience. Overall Wake the Tiger is really good and I will definitely go back, If you like theme parks and themed experiences you should go.
Fun Fact: Droomvlucht is Geert Wilders' favourite Efteling attraction
Disney make a kopy from the efteling, the ideas he took fromt he efteling first !!! After disney visit to the efteling first!!!
He didn't visit the Efteling.
I was not expecting thereto be TWO Hunger Games theme parks, not just one.
i won't lie, if a ride has the ability to make me cry (as several of the new disney rides have) then i'm just gonna accept my fate and cry. i need that release anyways lmao
This reminds me of the time Kylie Jenner through a Handmaid’s Tale themed party
Just downed packets watching this lol
I love how in the books, people of the capital literally go to old hunger games arenas as if they are theme parks. We spent a whole series hating the capitol just turn around and be. The Capitol
Taking a picture with a peace keeper is WILD
Your channel is undersubbed af... Amazing premise and interesting original topics... Your gonna blow up
“Death is inevitable” is FUCKING CRAZY 😭
Can you make a video about the divergent theme park
I can relate to the 15 minute rant about a Dutch theme park in the middle of a party. great video man!
Tbh I think the only advertisement I’d accept is an ad for the Toyota Hilux and just…. Let the customer’s mind connect the dots themselves
"I'm really curios about what would happen to Tayto in the reunification of Ireland" is a question I never thought to wonder
I love that you used Expedition: Everest as an example of a better use of timing to unsettle the rider, since there's that interview with a/the guy behind "13" describing that same bit as boring, explaining that _his_ rollercoaster will be way scarier because you don't have to sit and wait on a drop track. Also the Jenny Nicholson line was great.
I just checked out this interview and whilst I love and respect Mr. John Wardley I firmly disagree on his Expedition Everest analysis aha
The most important detail: It was called "Project Dylan" because they named it after someone's cat.
Why did this *video* make me emotional???
I was first thinking "Well why not use reflections to show Bella kissing Edward from a different angle" but then though " Oh never mind, I forgot Edward is a vampire and it wouldn't work since Bella would look like she's making out with the air like an actor with a fully CGI character". Snow White ride could benefit that effect with some kind of mirror, water or any other magical reflections while still letting the guests see through her 1st POV. That would also help them to know they are seeing from her view.
Ian Gregg should appear in a future video
"let's face it, you were surprised when you found out a Twilight theme park existed" me, who keeps forgetting but is reminded a few times a year through social media posts that a Harry Potter theme park exists: 😐😐😐
You cant just bring up John Wick land and not elaborate.
I mean, I’ve commonly heard Saw described as one of the greatest comedy series of all time because basically every movie from 2 onwards has this incredibly camp energy to it.
Found your channel recently and it’s become one of my favorites being that theme parks have been one of my special interest for years
Ray Coyle's voice sounds like every bag of "Tayto chips" he's every has actually been a canvas bag full of nails and he never noticed that's not what most people eat
Carnival festival is a kidsride for sure. I still love it because of the nostalgia, but I can understand why someone wouldn’t like it if you saw it as an adult for the first time.
I worked on Lionsgate Entertainment World in China. I was in the build team
That's so cool! Any fun stuff you can share about working on it?
@@MikeFromTheParty it was a complex project with the owner being the lai sun group and Lionsgate just providing IP. We did have 1 big delay when one of the typhoons came through and caused enough damage to delay the project 3 months. There are many things I can't talk about on an open forum. but I will say you hit the nail on the head for most of the video.
I will say 1 thing to remember is although a IP holder holds the IP for the movie - most of the time if the movie was not animated the studio does not hold the rights for the appearance of an actor/actress. (in Bella's journey the final scene figures only give an impression of being Edward and Bella. They don't actually look like them if you look close)
This is really interesting, thank you for sharing!!
@2:57 A "Die Hard" theme park land sounds awesome... Lol. Imagine a Tower of Terror, only it's Nakatomi Tower.
Is the park just as boring as the series?
All rides are based on a story (yes even Droomvlucht) But they are not telling them.
so you live here yet you still called them chips in the title of the video? *tut tut*
the only terrifying experience i had on this ride was when a very tiny kid (he was defo too short for this ride) was let on a seated Infront of me, me and my boyfriend had to shut our eyes because we were so scared he would fall out. now that was scary... so maybe saw is the worlds scariest ride as long as there is a small human sat Infront of you 😅
MICHAEL B**** HOW THE FUCK DID I JUST FIND YOUR FACEBOOK BY THE ALGORITHM SEEING MY OBSESSION WITH THEME PARKS!!! WE WENT TO UNI TOGETHER (DERWENT B-BLOCK CREW).
