Land Rover 300TDi replacement with a 2.8
The day finally arrived. Mabel had her heart transplant.
The team at the Escuela de Mecanica Automotriz, Santa Maria del Tule were fantastic. The job was done in record time!! A very professional organisation. The old engine was out in 3 hours and the new one in and running by the end of the day. Considering they had never seen a Land Rover before it was amazing. We all learned something.

Cooking Vegetable Samosas

Tony cooks up some tasty vegetable samosas - an Indian style snack popular in the UK. Homemade raita is really easy & tasty. You can substitute mint (either fresh or mint sauce) for coriander in the raita. For American viewers: Courgette = zucchini Coriander = cilantro ENJOY #camping #campcooking #recipes #spicysnackrecipe #vanlife #vanlifecooking

Coleman collapsible camp oven. A game changer for overlanders.

We bought this little oven whilst in the USA. We're currently stuck waiting for car parts so we've been using the oven to cook meals, bake cakes and bread. Great for warming croissants etc. Marvellous !!!
Guatemala 2

We were captivated by Guatemala. Such a beautiful place!! Mountains, volcanoes and forests abound. Here we continue south towards Antigua Guatemala (gearbox rebuild!) via Guatemala City. Then the stunning Lake Atitlan. We returned to Mexico rather than continue down through Central America because Mabel is right-hand-drive and won't be allowed into Costa Rica (very sad). We hope to ship to Colu...

The first place we stayed in Guatemala was in San Andres on the Lago Peten Itza. Then we headed south (still outrunning hurricane Beryl!). The river - Rio de la Pasion - crossing was in Sayaxche. The caves are Cuevas de Candelaria - very much enter at your own risk. Very dark, lots of climbing. Great fun!
Mexico to Belize

Our first sight of the Caribbean sea was in Tulum, Mexico. We crossed into Belize with great expectations but were thwarted by hurricane Beryl!! We knew it was the rainy season but the hurricanes don't normally start until later in the year. As it happened Beryl turned north, but when we got to Belize City it was forecast to make land there. We can't rush anywhere in Mabel so we made the sad de...
Agua Azul & Palenque Mayan ruins. Mexico.
Переглядів 325 місяців тому
The archaeological site at Palenque was the first Mayan site we went to. We paid a guide (expensive) for the first part of the visit - in the jungle. It really was not worth the money. It's good that you can enter parts of the pyramids & climb one if you are brave enough, following in the footsteps of the 'ancients'.
Off road along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico

Nikki is infamous for finding 'interesting' roads and routes. They usually are interesting and have been some of the most scenic and memorable drives we've undertaken. We were stopped twice along here by people with ropes (or chains) across the road. The first guy multiplies his 'toll' by more than 10 - Gringo rate. The second (out of shot at the other end of the road) accepted that we had "no ...

Our journey in Mexico continues via Oaxaca, across the Isthmus, up to the Gulf of Mexico. Unbeknown to us we caught the edge of tropical storm Alberto - see the next video. We had another breakdown on the way from the coast up to Oaxaca, the coolant header tank split (again!). We managed to limp up to a fabulous campsite so the 3 week delay - down to Rovers North and their choice of courier :( ...
Baja Ferry La Paz to Mazatlan
Переглядів 1126 місяців тому
This was our experience of crossing from La Paz to the Mexican mainland. There was a 3 week delay as our original ferry 'broke down'. We were put in with the lorries and Tony had to squeeze between them to get back to Mabel. They separated drivers from passengers which was a fraught experience. As we say in the video passengers are a bit of an afterthought, the main business is trucks

Mainland Mexico. Rancho B to Acapulco

We continued on highway 200 - what a road!!!! - along the coast of mainland Mexico. We camped on the outskirts of Acapulco for a couple of nights and then drove through, fully intending to stop. There were police & Guardia Nacional everywhere. Roads were closed off & Google sent us chasing wild geese (as usual!). Unable to stop, but you can see throughout the film the damage done by Hurricane O...

We explored Baja Sur. Bypassing Cabo St Lucas (we try to avoid big towns, if we can) and stayed on the eastern cape. At our campsite overlooking La Fortuna beach we could watch the whales from our camp. For Holy Week - Palm Sunday to Easter Monday we headed inland to the Sierra de la Laguna Park via Santiago (22km off road). We spent 10 blissful days at Rancho San Dionisio before heading back u...

What a beautiful Landy. Can I ask what snorkel you have?
can it fit on to other cars?
I had a similar problem on my 300TDi. Overheating, loosing coolant and poor performance. I also suffered cracked header tank which I replaced with AliSport. I also replaced the head with a Turner Engineering head. Still had the problem. I had the injector pump rebuild because of the power drop but nothing fixed the issue. I was looking around for a replacement engine. I took it to a local garage for its MOT and the mechanic said most of the symptoms could be down to timing. Having been through all that more than once I was sceptical. Well he was right. The key on the crank pulley was badly worn resulting in the pulley being a few degrees out. He replaced the key and the pulley, fortunately the crank was fine, and I have not had the problem since. Basically if I was using it hard it would overheat.
Where you buy the engine, at what was the cost?? Should last forever now lol
Love your truck, are you still ring it
Running it*
Lovely video, thank you for sharing :) Greetings from Luxembourg
Hi you both done very well ,with the replacement engine ,and a good choice, more power ,
Thanks for sharing your experience. What do think is the best level ( hight) of the header tank, relative to the cylinder head/ valve cover and the top of the radiator? What about the proper cooling fluid, if you don't go for genuine LR?
Hello and thanks for sharing your experience. I did Not get the while story, so May I ask, is there a Special reason for the T4 Bonnet or did you Swap the 300TDi for the TD4 engine? Did you "Upgrade" the engine with some ( brazilian) 2.8 (300TDi) parts? ( Crankshaft e.g.). I like the electronic free 300TDi Discovery (3dr Trophy model) and the 200TDi in my 109 S3 ex-mod, too. Regards Heinz, Germany
Hello Heinz. Thanks for your interest. I just like the bonnet - no special reason. This engine was a second hand 1995 300tdi that I fully rebuilt and fitted about 10 years ago. It served us well until last year. It had some mods - larger ally radiator, full size intercooler & a variable vane turbo. We have made a 2nd film about the issues we've had recently & are currently putting together part 3 which documents the replacement engine with a brand new 2.8 300tdi (it has been in a week & we are still test driving it). I too prefer no electronics. All the best. Tony
@@grandrovervoyagerHello Tony, thanks for the quick Response. Regards Heinz
How many miles has this engine done? Would be interesting to know what went wrong with the old engine, 300tdi's are usually super reliable if taken care of. Hope your new engine serves you well.
@@Chris-wz4zr it's a 1995 engine that was bought 2nd hand. Possibly 100,000 miles - difficult to know 🤔
When u when u do lots of miles in these 300 tdi they evaporate a lot of water but not enough that will just noticeably no ,I no this sounds weird, and yes I had the same issue in summer time were I thought I was loosing water with no visible signs until I put a very sensitive sensor on my water tank and noticed in how weather they actually u quit a bit and due to the pump being higher than the head tank it creates a air lock what makes the engine overheating when using less water than u would think in the header tank ,like only quarter of a litre with some engines. So with all them miles that u was doing it does not surprise me that this was happening so much on long journeys .hope that helps and it’s all about side of top ups on long journeys 😁
Building one yourself instead of Buying a Parentie, Brilliant Lots of bits at the end i cant identify lol, but Brilliant none the less!
My knee jerk reaction is you have a dodgy block. Be it warped or cracked internally. The other thing is how much power are you taking out of the engine? Ultimately I'd say you are doing the right thing but do check everything like the rad and the viscus fan with the new engine. Also I see you have a full width intercooler. I had to block the whole space between my rad and the wings, as I was having air being pulled around the rad and not going through the rad on my engine. I'm talking like a 1" gap was causing a problem but I could feel the air being pulled around the rad. Lovely to see another isle of Wight truck so far away! Message me if you'd like more details.
She's not from IOW. The current number plate was a replacement when she was re - registered as a 6 wheeler. DVLA, in their wisdom wouldn't let me keep the original plate because of the modifications. Had to have another plate & decided to keep it to the same year as the original (B444 SFD). Thanks for your input.
Yeah agree with what you are saying mate, if by changing the header tank did nothing. The quite clearly it's either an internal problem with the engine, or the cooling system isn't sufficient enough. Like you said airflow , and I check the whole cooling system under pressure
@@Jasonbiripicountryalready checked, more than once.
I would still love to know what caused the overheating. I'm having the same issue with my defender 130. I also gave up and about to change the whole engine with a second hand though. Thanks for the video and I like to see how yours go.
Hi yes I'm intrigued to see what is wrong this time. When the engines out will take the head off and have a look.
How much did you paid and did they ask for your vehicles docs?
You’re right. A brilliant. Engine
Fantastic, i have a 300tdi in my '95 110. Amazing how they keep going. Unbeknown to me i had a crack in the head which let water in to the no4 cylinder intake, when i cranked it one day it went bang and bent a conrod! Amazingly it still ran! Was just a bit down on power. I replaced the Conrod and hopefully its good for another 200 thousand miles! Great vehicle you have!
Thanks, hope it's all OK now. We've had water issues too. Now doing the 3rd video about 300tdi as we had to replace the entire engine!! All the best Tony
Very sketchy down along the coast after a storm.
Looks like your coolant system is over-pressurised.
Just crap plastic header tanks which split for a pastime.
had same issue with my disco 1 300tdi but haven't had the idea of connecting coolant without the tank! always something new to learn, best of luck!
Glad to be of help
Beautiful Videos from Beautiful People...
Thanks so much
Did you modify your radiator supports to bolt on thr wings?
Yes just made them a bit longer to get the extra large rad to fit.
Hey bud where did you get your vaccum hose from brake booster
Ebay silicone hose
Unbelievable crap house two in one year. What a joke
Always fun to follow you on UA-cam.

We loved them too, apart from the screeching. All well, thanks.
Thanks Tony and Nikki. We are a little jealous as we are back home in Bellingham now. Safe travels and we look forward to seeing your next video! Mark and Robin 👍
Our pleasure!
Why are you running the plastic expansion tank?
Good question. Having had a second one go bang we're waiting on an aluminium one!!!
Are you running a td5 Mount radiator a an intercooler?

We'll be there in about a week, thanks for the preview.
Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
What an amazing adventure!

Nice video, did you do any performance upgrades to the 300tdi?
Yes larger intercooler, tweaked the pump and a variable vane turbo

So cool to see you two driving along the California roads! Neat build!
It was nice to see you guys as well. Your plates say your a long way from home too.😁
Its nice to see a proper laning with proper motors. Shows you dont need a tricked up mega lifted disco with silly wheels. Its also interersting to see Horseshoe lane when it was still green and only one route down the step. Badly eroded in just 20yrs. Im guessing Happy Valley aswell. Trying to work out where you passed those nice series motors.? Thanks for posting. 👍👍👍
Thanks for you comments and glad you liked the films. The sieres were filmed at the start of the track over to Tywyn at the happy Valley end.
You may also be interested to know that the mountain land rover 110 in the video is the same vehicle as the 6x6 I drive now. I did a total strip and rebuild of her specialy for the round the world trip we are now on. Land Rovers live for ever

Great to meet you both today! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions 😊
Nice video , I have a 98 300tdi ,pride of the British Army and the Crankshaft broke after 147k miles!!!! Now replaced the engine with a 96 that’s done 100k and praying for better luck
Hi Barry glad you enjoyed the video and hope you have more luck with this engine.
Had the replacement fitted plus timing belt, clutch rear main etc etc Goes well but drips oil from seam between bell housing and block Also lots of white smoke on start up. Had new injectors , glow plugs plus there is a knock that sounds tappety but is not. The engine came from a rolled Landie Beginning to wish I’d bought Toyota!!!!!!
I have a 300TDI myself, and recently had to have a new high pressure diesel pump fitted as the apparently contaminated fuel in Lesotho reduced the lubricating effect of the diesel. I mention this because you said these engines would run on paraffin. I wouldn't recommend this for the above reason.
They will run on any oil based fuel but it must be clean. It's when you get diesel with water in it is what does the damage as not all the water will sit in the bottom of the filter also extremely fine sand can pass through as I have experienced in North Africa.
Add standard 40 grade oil to your tank before filling(to get a good mix) with paraffin and it will be okay.
Hey mate I see you’re in Bakersfield. We’re one lane away from you at Wally World
Yeah here for a couple of night then off to LA
Have a safe journey
We loved Yellowstone when we visited about 5 or 6 years ago! Hope you visit Grand Teton as well! Nice to see where you’ve headed since we met in Clinton BC.
Hi, lovely to meet you in Clinton - great campground. We loved Yellowstone, didn't get to Grand Teton but we went on to do a couple of Utah parks and onwards down to Arizona and California. Catching up on videos (sorry for the delay in replying).
Got the pleasure of seeing it on the road. They were shopping at a Walmart in Brigham City Utah, USA. Wonderful rig.
Great build GREAT!!!
Thanks, better late than never!
worlds greatest land rover by a long stretch, enjoy the journey 😊😊
Thanks very much
Indeed, very good to hear that this is your engine of choice.. I have just replaced a Puma 2.4 with a 300Tdi rebuilt at home. Did you stick with the standard vacuum pump or did you modify?
Standard vacuum pump works fine
Too bad you guys were there when you were. Most smoke on record and the busiest tourist season on record. We went through between Aug10th -21st. Wasn’t quite as busy. Still skipped Banff, Lake Louise and Moraine lake. Spent all of our time in the Icefields and Jasper. If you’re headed towards Vancouver island, check out Cathedral grove. Giant cedar trees. I believe from the island or Tsawwassen you can ferry to Washington state and start your journey south once the weather starts to turn in late September/October. Cheers.
Hi Tony, I accidentally subscribed to the wrong channel thinking it was this one. Lol. It was good chatting with you at Dickson campgrounds back in British Columbia a few days ago. Hope all is well and safe travels! 😀
