Frank, Frank... Frank... If you want to write a story about messiahs being dangerous, maybe don't have the messiah figure actually be the good guy. Paul literally kickstarted the events that saved humanity. 61 Billion vs the entirety of humanity. He wasn't even deluded about his path being the good path. He knew how horrible it was, and he also knew that it was the only way, and he grieved for it.

Virgins: Paul is the bad guy, and he kills a lot of people. Chads: Paul knew mankind was doomed to destruction if we did not evolve, so he willing became a villain so humanity can rise up against him and their oppressors' so they can not only survive but thrive in a galaxy that does not care for us.

He actually is the hero though? Just not in the strictest sense of the word. He did what he did so that eventually someone might lead them out of the system that had been built. He knew he couldn’t do it all in his own lifetime, but he set the path for the Fremen to finally be free. He may have not been the one to do it, but without him it would have never happened. And it was no accident on his part either.

Dune has always been a warning against the danger of human meddling with Gods plans. From Abraham conceiving Ishmael to lady Jessica bearing Paul in Letos honor, trying to flip God around never ends well and Dune is the end result of playing God. Billions of lives lost and the universe in shambles all because some matriarchal witches wanted to breed a space Jesus. Well they got what they wanted, too bad he disagreed instead…

As someone who’s just watched both Part one and two, finding out Paul is responsible for 60 billion deaths has me invested. I need to know what the heck he did!!!

People love power. If you look at any political figure in the real world, there is a reason personal attacks are so powerful and influence peoples perception. So much more than abstract questions of policy or even their actions. Paul in the film is given a dignity and gravitas that, almost like a Pantomine, makes you not see him as a monster and frankly a pathetic human being. Like I could not stand him personally. As stunted and ignorant as Perturabo. If a character in the story called him out on this. It would totally destroy his credibility in the eyes of the audience and most writers don’t want to do that as they’re afraid of looking like they are straw manning or it would lose the gravitas and tone of the story. Thanos for example. You could say his plan is incredibly stupid but the heroes critique is really toned down and measured to lend that gravitas to the proceedings.
