This was a sign of the times. At the same time this was happening on Dawson's Creek... Rachel was falling for Joey (the guy), on Friends. It was no accident that the writers were having trouble writing these parts, and that the actors were having trouble performing them! Not to oversimplify any of it, or take anything away from anybody, but TV was just moving in a more shallow, cynical direction. It was a lot easier to pair up people who could banter well than it was to try to drive a real romance, between two people with real emotions. When you have to bang out a certain number of episodes... you do whatever is easiest. However, cynicism does not inspire people. The show was lucky to last six seasons. (For comparison, My So-Called Life was a much better show that should have lasted much longer than it did. But, you cannot churn out something that good.)

Honestly, I found Pacey and Jen to be the best characters in the entire show!

They don’t write honest, smart characters like this anymore. Now it’s overly sexual, pining, moody, borderline abusive behaviours. Now to get a entertaining teen drama it has to involve murder and creeps, with dumbed down vocabulary and pandering scenes.

Dawson treated her as a possession and only noticed her beauty when she was dressed up because Pacey forced him to, Pacey fell in love with Joey for the reasons beyond the beauty, and helped her see herself the way he did.
