There are so many awesome shmups out there, I know I couldn't do a top 5. Maybe a top 25, but not 5. One game that would probably make it is R-Type Final. I never liked horizontal shmups until I played that one. Now they're in regular rotation.

If u like dan 3’s bullet patterns u should try the touhou games. Touhou 7, and 8 are both good places to start

Corrections: Aero Fighters was developed by Video System. Tecmo was a publisher. Nakamura only worked on the first game in the series before leaving to join or possibly found Psikyo in 1992. The Strikers (1995-1999) and Aero Fighters (1992-1997) series were released almost concurrently.

i find the lack of Einhander on this list disturbing... having Ikaruga on this list without Radiant Silvergun is nuts. no Raiden? no R-Type Delta? no Mushihimesama Futari? insane.

As a Strikers-1945 hardcore player, this made me burst in joy when it made it top 5. I do agree with you that it's fun and challenging (not loop-2, it's hell). Keep going bro!

Super R Type - Best soundtrack of all time, now with slowdown patches it's even better. Darius G - Steal the enemies and use them as weapons. R Type Delta - Like super R type but cozy ps1 3d. Parodius Series - Wacky, lots of characters, good variety. The void rains upon her heart - Endlessly replayable roguelike shmup, INSANE amount of unlocks and content, the entire game consists of boss battles and it can get very complicated (in a good way), if you want a shmup with a little more depth to it, this is your best choice.

cuphead is not a shmup.

In addition to Shmup Junkie, I highly recommend The Electric Underground. He is very experienced with shmups and arcade games in general. He has a video playlist called "How to Shmup", which is really informative. I didn't really know much about shmups before I started watching his channel, and it's really interesting to hear the thoughts and opinions of someone who has put thousands of hours into these types of games and has a lot of opinions about them.

If you like bullet hells, you must at least have heard of the Touhou series. If you haven't, check it out. At the moment the series has 19 mainline games and several spin-offs. Usually Touhou 6 is the one suggested as a good starting point as it is the first Touhou made for windows and a soft-reboot of the series. It is a little clunkier then the more recent ones but it is still very much beloved

Two recommendations for anyone who cares: Angel at Dusk, the Void Rains Upon Her Heart. Both indie games, both made by crazy people. Each has mechanics that make the games super unique
