Chasing 4960
This legendary steam locomotive has a long and varied history. As fate would have it, 4960 was spared from being scrapped when it took on steam excursion duty in the 1950s. It ultimately found its way to Williams, Arizona where it makes trips to the Grand Canyon more memorable than ever.

The CB&Q 4960 Steam Engine Stops in Rochelle, Illinois in 1965 (with sound)
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
Listen as CB&Q's 4960 makes a stop in Rochelle, Illinois during a steam excursion in 1965. Reel-to-reel tape recorded sound from microphones placed in a window of the Rochelle depot. The film and sound elements were brought together for the first time ever after more than 50 years. Also featured is silent film of 4960 as it continues westward to Oregon, Illinois before heading east again to Aur...
I enjoyed the video, Excellent footage.
Thank you!
+Roads to Rails where did you get this footage?
It's from our family archives.
I love this Choo Choo ❤😊
I love this history. 😍😍😍😍😍😍
It is a wonderful triumph of the dedication and time people have invested in it.
At 3 minutes and 20 seconds, a peugeot 404 car!
1:06 original warning bell
Love the way you brought this to life!
The 4960 Is Currently Looking The Original 4960 Not This One But Still It Was Looking Ok!
This is 4960 on the CB&Q, She Was Rebuilt when she went to the GCRy
@@EngineerDaylight i know but rebuilt 4960 looks better!
Wow, I've lived in Rochelle my whole life.
#4960 was saved from the scrapper's torch.
She's my 2nd favorite steam locomotive for me :3 Easy guess, and as shown by my channel, as to which steam locomotive is No. 1 for me. ;)
its a he
@@AlowanMoonstar Hey, I do that in the case of the Union Pacific Big Boy. Any other steam locomotive I'm fine with calling a she. Like say 611 for example: Many railfans do call her the Queen of Steam.
I would like to visit this engine in operation.
It's definitely worth a trip to see it in action!
@@roadstorails2349 wish she was still in her CB&Q appearance though.
4960 is a true excursion legend!!!
@@jeremyasher297 and another beautiful locomotive.
It’s a shame that 5632 didn’t make it at least we have 4960 still around. It’s now owned by Grand Canyon railway.
I’m pretty sure you already know this but the reason why the light was moved down a bit is because the light doesn’t beam far enough down the track to comply with regulations. Before anyone asks, “Why don’t they just put a LED on it?” I have a feeling people would complain endlessly.
It was moved down to conform with the "family look" of the GCRy's other operable locomotives 18 and 29 and it was the personal preference of GCRy CMO Robert Franzen who rebuilt 4960. It had nothing to do with the light emitted by the headlight.
CB&Q 4960 lives on today in Williams, Arizona, as the Grand Canyon Railway (GCRY) 4960!
We just got to see it running strong on June 5th!
@@roadstorails2349 I miss the 4960’s 5 chime whistle 😢😢
@@randomchannel6348 her bell in the 50s is NOTHING like the one it wears today. I think it was gonna be used on 19 or 20 when the plans were eventually scratched out with the 1472 in 1991 and 1992-93 respectively
@@nicholasmedovich8691 yeah, I know that, I was saying I missed her old 5 chime whistle, NOT her bell, she wears a Santa Fe 6 chime now, complement different than her original CB&Q 5 chime
She was running in coal, now today she was converted to oil
Great detail and nicely put together!
