This was a windfall that had the potential of making Ukraine one of the great states of Europe but it was not to be.. The naval base at Sevastopol was leased from Ukraine. Crimea with its 75% Russian population, was not essential to the integrity of Ukraine but it was a prime objective for NATO/US because with it went control of the Black Sea... An independent Ukraine presented a strategic opportunity for US/NATO as suggested in Zbigniew Brzeziński 1997 book, "The Grand Chessboard" where he suggests using Ukraine as a battering ram against Russia. This was the plan orchestrated by US/NATO and Ukraine was used as a proxy... After 3 waves of NATO expansion, I hold the minority opinion that Putin did the right thing.
