Happy new year Dale. Good to see the choice of R & L Thompson as your first choice. I tend to enjoy Traffic's album from John barleycorn on - picked up the 2nd album towards the back end of last year and was underwhelmed by it to be honest. When you showed the first volume of the Island book I meant to follow up and get a copy - for some reason I never did. Will definitely have to get the 2nd volume. Nice response sir... Cheers... Pete

HNY Dale. I've still not dabbled into Opeth. I reckon I'd dig them somewhere in their back catalogue. I still blame Pete Doherty for ruining Amy....... There are loads of great VC particularly UK channels and we are a pretty varied bunch best not to single anyone out so nicely done 👍✅

Like you I spend most of my time listening to newer music, 60s and 70s albums don’t get played much unless it’s punk. Lots of tag, I have one possibly coming out to confuse you more Dale lol

Some very good picks there Dale. The Island book looks interesting. Politics is always a tricky one, but I feel neutral in the fact that I hate them all. Whoever these people are working for, its not us/me. However I must admit I loved Rogers Brexit put down of Sky news. It was a welcome breath of fresh air in a sea of bias propagandised media BS day in day out. Happy New year 👍

My brother and I often discuss Blondies' records, particularly the singles..I would say Atomic is probably my favourite. " Tag gate" was ridiculous..record collecting and politics definitely don't mix. All the best Rob.

Happy New Year, Dale! I've got Calexico's Spiritoso, but I don't remember it being a RSD release. I think I ordered my copy from the band's website, but I could be wrong. You mentioned yours being a numbered edition, does that mean that it's the US Anti version? Mine's the City Slang edition on white vinyl. Bloody good live set. They've always been quite wide-screen cinematic, but the orchestra just ups the ante. Cheers - Hedley

One unexpected consequence of the "CD revolution" of the later '80s and '90s was that people went back and bought CDs of their favorite music that they'd already purchased on LP or cassette. It was a bonanza for record companies and their back catalogs -- and music fans got to experience the thrill of buying stuff we KNEW we loved all over again. I replaced many of my favorite LPs with CDs for about 20 years (though I managed to keep a few hundred of the original records), and then started going the other direction when I resumed buying vinyl again a dozen or so years ago. I'm with you. I now feel like I don't really HAVE an album until I possess it in both formats -- a CD for convenience and pristine listening (it took me years to burn my whole library to hard drives for instant playing through Roon on my '70s audio equipment -- though I also keep hard copies of the ones with good packaging and notes) and an LP for the Total Nostalgic Analog Experience. I know it's silly, but that's the way I feel.

Hi Dale. Happy New Year! Glad to hear the spreadsheet getting a mention. Introspective is an 80’s classic. I’m a big fan of PSB between Please and Behaviour. They were the best UK pop band during the second half of the 80’s. Richard Hawley, Sade, and Otis, are also much played here, although I’m sure you’d probably guess that. And I wanna know your inappropriate reincarnation choice! There’s an idea for a thread, right there….

Ripping CDs from the library shocking behaviour. I hope VC thought police are ok you've admitted that - I used to do that too in the not too distant past, seems weird mentioning that how quickly things have changed in the world doesn't it? Libraries still exist too (apparently) though how much longer can councils sustain them? That Church album I saw them twice on that tour my first ever proper adult gigs seems a lifetime ago now. Haha spitting image called him Steve 'interesting' Davis I can't believe anyone else remembers that. The sketch was based around others having nicknames and he didn't. The 'spit in your ear' spitting image album is a grail for me I used to know all of it..... The Scott Walker is a jarring sound from memory nevertheless his change from regular chanson to Avant garde journey. Happy Christmas to you and happy hunting and playing into next year. Always new sounds to discover.

Glad you liked the albums Dale. Nice find of the Robyn Hitchcock. I've only got his first album Black Snake Diamond Role which is really good, Though I do also have the 2nd Soft Boys album Underwater Moonlight which is even better. Have a wonderful Christmas, and all the very best for 2025.

Great selection Dale, I've never checked out the Bob Stanley series of comps though I have seen them being shown (mainly by yourself I think!). I love the cover of the Tears of Technology one, very 'nostalgia-futurist' (is that a thing?) . It's strange how that kind of early 80's synth music can be so melancholy sounding, although I guess that's partly to do with the age we are. I may put some of these on the CD-wants list for next year. Cheers, have a good Crimbo and new year.🎄

Wow! I thought I had a lot of comps, but I’ve nowhere near 800. English Weather had me at “flutes and mellotrons”, I’ve never heard of it before. The Paris riots comp sounds really cool too. I wasn’t aware about these Bob Stanley comps, they all sound excellent. Love the Choctaw Ridge cover and the Fantastic Voyage one. Brilliant video!

Great to see the Saint Etienne/Bob, Pete Ace compilations getting the attention they deserve. I really love the Fountain Coffee Room, Tea and Symphony and Gather In The Mushrooms comps.

I’ve also recently discovered Jim Driver’s channel. Interesting opinions by one who was there. I think the English Weather comp captures that grey early 70s Prog vibe perfectly, though I’ve never checked out some of the others you showed, including the Paris one and Tim Peaks.

Nice series of comps Dale. I have two of the series - 'Occasional Rain' and 'Incident at a Free Festival' both excellent. I think the English Weather one should probably be invested in next along with the Cafe Exil. I love my multi-artist comps - particularly the 70s label samplers, and the Cherry Red / Esoteric CD box sets.

Hi Dale, like you I'm a feel man rather than a lyric man so would find this thread very difficult to do. I think Leonard Cohen is too often accused of being a sad b*stard artist, but I think that's mainly due to his voice - there's quite a bit of humour in his songs. Beeswing - excellent choice, but you could have chosen around 75% of Mr. Doom & Gloom's songs! As I said to Rob, my favourite Smith's song would be the runout at the end of any of their albums 😂. Interesting comments re. Sgt. Pepper. My copy is still sealed because I feel that know it too well to actually play it. At the same time I think it’s a record I should have in my collection.

An interesting thread topic from James - might have to give it some thought. You've obviously helped me out in the last week with a favourite album that I only had on CD - many thanks again. I one of those idiots / madmen who is constantly looking to source vinyl copies of his CDs, but who on doing so will still keep his original CD (even though nowadays that will subsequently be hardly ever played if at all) - totally bonkers (but there is a grain of twisted reason in there which I might explain if I do a response to this thread). I was just really getting into Nick Cave when Nocturama came out and I bought it on CD. Unfortunately, while I thought it was OK, I never wanted to play it - found it a bit dull. This had the impact of derailing my growing interest in Cave for a long time, and it's only really recently that I thought I should renew that interest. Cheers... I found that Shirley Collins for a quid in a thrift shop. A dealer offered me a fair bit for it (describing it as 'sexy' the music I think he meant) but I've kept it. Something about the organ I really like. Fine album.

This is a great thread from James - I’m with you that I’m happy to get vinyl copies of CDs I own - but not bothered if I’ve got the vinyl and not the CD now as I can stream it in the car now they’ve took CD players out - right price is normally the deciding factor on CD purchases . Good video and rationale - I’ve got my choices ready to film later this week - think you got a bit of love from John on his vinyl tag video ❤
