Archery Broadhead test target. Single Bevel vs Mechanical vs Double Bevel
I accidentally tested the penetration of my broadhead. Turns out, a stall mat is a cool test medium for arrow penetration. Who would have thought? So I decided to test a field point, a single bevel, a double bevel, and a mechanical broadhead. I think the result was definitive! Is this a fair test? Tell me what you think!

      I went with a Bluetti AC200max. I run all of the accessories (lights, vent fan, usb outlets) off of a 12v deep cell battery, but can easily switch them to the powerstation if needed. I generally try to save the power bank for higher draw items like coffee maker, charging multiple electronics, or on shorter 1 or 2 night trips I can run the air conditioner or small heater. I do plan to add at least one expansion battery in the future. Thanks for checking it out and the kind words! Good luck on your build!

  • @graystone3048
    @graystone3048 20 днів тому

    You absolutely want the glue on the outside. That’s what hardens and creates the hard shell that gives the actual protection from moisture. The way you did it, You basically have nothing more than painted fabric at this point. One tiny micro hairline crack in the WATER BASED PAINT and you’re screwed. This is not how pmf is done. After gluing the canvas on several coats of either a thinned glue such as Titebond II or even a glue and paint mixture are applied to create the hard shell. Any paint after that is cosmetic mostly while providing some additional protection.

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit 20 днів тому

      @@graystone3048 You will probably be shocked to hear this, but like many things, there is more than one way to do it. You'll probably be even more shocked to hear that with the proper paint, it can be done with no glue at all!! And on top of that, if you aren't careful, glue on top of the canvas can cause bonding issues with some paints and cause even more problems. As I did it, I was certain to select a high quality exterior, water proof, UV resistant paint which is designed to remain flexible in order to allow movement and help to prevent said cracking. Ensuring the paint is soaked into the fibers of the canvas by thinning first layers will also create a more weather resistant barrier. As with most things, care and maintenance is the most important aspect of it's longevity. As of yet, it has exceeded expectations and surpassed the durability of multiple commerciallly made campers owned by friends and family. I assure you it will outlast the industry lifetime expectancy of 15 years. I appreciate you for checking it out and providing input for others to consider if they choose to venture out and build one of their own! Happy New Year!

    The only thing I see myself I didn't care for is where the single bevel went in was in between the raised circles on the mat. The mechical head looks like at least blade had a lot blow through material. Imo it's actually impressive what a nock off over the top mechanical head did vs the fixed. That head has much more drag/resistance/loss of energy to open.

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit 20 днів тому

      I too was pretty surprised how the mechanical performed and was expecting it to do about the same as the field point. I did try to hit all on a spot with similar thickness to avoid affecting the test, so you might be right! If I was to do a thorough test I would probably shoot at least 3 of each and then average the performance! Good input! Thanks!

  • @kippicarella3568

    Love the test! How heavy were the broad heads? FOC and KE should be close to equal for better test. I ran the 125 grain black hornet and blew through a deer quartering away. Total arrow weight 430 grains.

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit 20 днів тому

      The arrow setup and weight was identical. The field point and single bevel are both 125 grain. The mechanical and the Magnus are both 100 grain broadheads, but with an additional insert weight of 25 grains. Total arrow weight is 480 grains. 70# at approximately 275fps. Thanks for watching!

  • @brentbandy3566

    I think you should shoot a single bevel with bleeders as well. You could’ve gotten better penetration with the omega due to the lack of drag compared to the Ser-Razor (w/bleeders) or a SB w/bleeders.

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit 20 днів тому

      I may do some more general testing in the future, but this was just kto show the accidental realization that the stall mat could be a good test medium. There wasn't much planning so I just used broadheads I already had on hand. Good idea, Thanks for checking it out!

    Just curios, did you add plywood on the inside for strength? From what I gather the foam is strong enough when it is jointed well and has the 'poor mans fiberglass' as a shell and then done on the inside. I was going to build a teardrop, maybe on those since they're so small foam + pmf is sufficient enough.

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit Місяць тому

      @@exodous02 It was for a few reasons. Strength is one of them, since I go offroad with it and it gets put in various positions and gets bounced around more than the average camper. It helps with racking and also provided a better surface for mount shelves. I also didn't feel like doing PMF on the inside, but wanted a surface that I could easily pre-assemble and help from damaging the foam.

So, this unit isn't designed for very large spaces or frequently opening the door etc. I was really just going for enough to take the edge off and make a dent in the high humidity of Arkansas. With that said, it has actually exceeded what I expected. I rarely off grid camp in temps higher than 90, but I ran a test on a 95 degree day (on shore power) and within 2 hours it was 76 degrees in the camper. On a very humid 80 degree night I was able to run it on the lowest settings and only use up about 50% of my 2048Wh power supply. So don't expect comparable to a window unit on shore power, but it does what I need. The only question now is how long will it last. Interesting method to build. I thought this was going to be a foamie or whatever they call them (foam and fiberglass) But with the plywood… why not just just make your structure out of the plywood, then wrap it in foam?

    • @trailandpursuit
      @trailandpursuit 6 місяців тому

      @@Mebeknob For the main body, it's all about keeping it lightweight, so while the minimalist interior frame does add some strength, the true strength comes from the redundancy of the layers. If I had built the frame first, it would actually be quite flimsy and likely be difficult to keep square during the process so that is why the panels where constructed before assembly. If I had built the body first out of plywood it would have been approximately 350 lbs heavier than what it currently is. The body of the camper is 5ft x 10ft and 4ft tall and only weight about 350lbs! Good question! Thanks for checking it out.

      @trailandpursuit 6 місяців тому

      @@MebeknobI got you, I thought you were asking why the entire body wasn't built with plywood. I attached the frame to the panels first because the foam and 3mm panels and frame altogether is where it gets it's strength. If I built the frame first, the frame by itself would be flimsy and easily become out of square, rack, or sag and not withstand pushing against it and or handle much weight during assembly of the panels (since it is a very minimalist frame). Which, would make assembly a little more complicated. Also, pre assembly allows for better glue up as I could lay the foam and panels flat with weight on top to insure even contact while the adhesive dried. Not to mention, adding the 3mm panels after the framing and foam would mean assembling everything from the inside and it would all have to be cut down to fit through the door. Resulting in more cuts, seams, and work. It definitely could be done either way. I think it is part of why some people tend to overbuild like it is a traditional 2x4 structure. They think the frame needs to be a majority of the strength, whereas, in lightweight campers it is a combination of multiple elements that provide the strength.

      100% agree hobbys like this and guns have rules you always follow no matter the circumstance alone, with friends, loaded, unloaded, near houses ect. You shouldn't be shooting anything near that house, empty or not. Ole grandma could walk outside any second looking for her kitty kitty she lost years ago lol. Anyway nice shot man really. Just next time just reverse where you are and put the can where you shot. No one could give any hate to you man. Be safe
