My Experience With RED Digital Cinema. 🤦‍♂️
Thanks for watching and checking out my channel!
If you have had good or bad experiences with RED Support or their cameras I'd love to hear about it, so please leave a comment below. I hope my experience was an outlier!
I've been wanting to make this video for a long time now and I tried to keep it as brief as possible while giving you all the necessary details. Opinions expressed in this video are all my own and I tried to be as fair as I reasonably could with this video format when presenting the facts. Due to RED's disclaimer on their support emails I was not able to show screenshots of them in this video, but I did go through everything while writing the outline/script to make sure the details were accurate.

      @@photographyRI Yep, pretty much. I’d say it’s less of an issue if you are buying it for personal use. I’m considering picking up a Komodo for personal projects now that I have a job outside the video field, and plan to only power with BP batteries/not hot swap to be extra careful. If your income doesn’t depend on it, if it goes down, your livelihood isn’t disrupted. If you’re buying a RED as a camera that your income depends on, I consider it essential to have at least one more than what you need so it’s ready to grab when one inevitably goes down. This goes for other brands as well, but I’ve been shooting on my a7S IIIs since 2020 and never had so much as a screen freeze. All about mitigating risk. RED sensors are gorgeous, but the risk was too much for me when my income was counting on them. That calculus has changed a bit now that I work in a different industry and will receive a paycheck whether the cam works or not. Hope that helps. :)

    I have an almost identical experience with one of my Dragon cameras. Having used Reds on and off since 2009 I can confidently say they are the most unreliable camera on the market. They produce stunning images and recode raw is a sensational codec. Though, the build quality of the cameras and their accessories is a joke. Every Red I have owned and used had problems, the redmags fail, the red pro touch screens fail, the lens mounts fail, the cooling fans fail, every SDI, HDMI, cntrl, TC and USB connections fail. They are an awful investment and embarrassing to put my name to when on a shoot. I gave up 2 years ago and have no interest in using Red ever again now that they sold out to Nikon.

      I don’t recall that being my message at all. My thoughts around being a RED owner were always based upon what I, as the owner/op, wanted to shoot on. Yes, of course my clients liked the image lol. And they hired me because they wanted great visuals. But since selling off all the REDs, I have been daily driving my a7S III’s, and my clients are just as happy, so I feel I’m up to the task as a DP in case you were implying otherwise… The REDs weren’t a crutch for me, they were a tool I wanted to use. That is, until all of these negative experiences compounded to a point at which it wasn’t worth it to me anymore. And I do still shoot with them occasionally when clients want to pay extra for the rental.

  • @miknivek11

    Thanks for sharing your experience, Chance. I own a RED camera and thankfully have only had minor issues, but nothing drastic. I think the fundamental problem lies in buying used camera gear, and especially camera models that are +6 years old. In the digital cinema market, that is considered very old and from a still a young & small company like RED, the quality support just won’t be easily available/received for such older cameras. Have you had a RED certified service center QC your bodies when you first bought them used? That is important when you’re investing in a used body with a high price tag. I also worked at a rental house with its own service center and we used to get clients/customers come in all the time with various issues with their cameras of all brands. These digital cameras are more like computers and have many issues, and the key thing is being patient and respectful to those service center staff. They are people too, and the more you get on their nerves, the less they want to help you. The best way is to get on their good side and be understanding. A 2-month turnaround is not ideal, but 4-6 weeks turnaround for repairs is actually pretty common. Sorry to hear you had to go through this, but just know that there’s never a high guarantee on any camera body and that’s what insurance is for. Also, certain insurances will actually cover for your loss of your camera kit fee while your camera is in repair, just FYI.

    I want to get the Red Scarlet W DSMC2 but people are saying I should not invest in an old sensor and should just get a used Komodo. What do you suggest. There is a Red Scarlet W package for sale for $4000, includes everything you need to shoot.

    • @theolufson
      @theolufson 6 місяців тому

      I like both for different reasons! I’ve actually owned both, too. I personally like the look of the Scarlet W sensor more, it’s a smaller cut of a Dragon sensor. Better dynamic range by a noticeable margin compared to the Komodo which made a big impact in the shots I was getting, but Dragon is a very light hungry sensor so if you expect to be shooting in a low light environment go Komodo, it has better low light performance. Komodo is also much smaller, WAY lighter, and uses about 1/3 of the power while running which is even more of a real-world difference than it sounds. My S-W killed a 95wh battery in about 1.5 hours, while the Komodo ran 5 hours on the same battery. Overall I think they’re both great, really depends on what you plan to shoot. If you can take your time, light things properly, and don’t mind a heavier camera with more batteries, I’m of the opinion that the Scarlet W will give you a better image overall with more dynamic range to work with. The S-W also has a more ‘grainy’ look to it because it’s only 5K and is a very light-hungry sensor, figured I should note that as well. If you have any more specific questions about either of them feel free to reach out!

I do hope you get it taken care of and still be able to sell it.

    I feel the lens connectivity issue is a reoccurring issue because they didn’t build a strong connection for that because most productions that would be using Red are using fully manual cinema lenses with iris and focus pulled wirelessly by a third-party device. The same with the lack of solid audio ports. But them trying to squeeze in fees for parts not broken is pretty messed up. If something is a part that tends to go that should be fixed by them free of charge under a “recall system”

    Not being able to disclose email information within a customer support instance seems kinda weird to me. I wonder if that would even hold up in court.

      Yeah companies should be consistent with how they deal with a situation either you always pay for the shipping or you never do. People should get familiar with the process and not feel confused by the process each time.

      @theolufson 8 місяців тому

      Yeah it’s real shady to me. There was no consistency in the process as you could tell haha. And I actually stopped and reread that disclaimer like what the heck? I’m curious why they’re so protective over their support emails. Makes you wonder what they want to hide…

      @@theolufsonI find it weird you had the same support agent. I know some agents seem to get a little aggravated when the same client comes back within warranty for free repairs but that isn’t the agents issue. If they send it in once or 200 times within warranty the process should be the same. I feel some people judge clients who come back for free repairs again and again and again and there is this bias against them. In warranty is in warranty if they feel they are losing money on one client due to faulty parts in their product they should work on better parts. Standard warranty procedures should apply.

    Blackmagics “compressed raw” is technically not fully compressed raw like everything about it seems like it is where you can set compression levels and stuff and control things like it’s raw but they did some technical reworking on the backend to workaround Red’s patent on internal compressed raw video recording. They do a partial de-bayer so not working with all the raw data. It’s just them trying to not get sued by Red who goes after everyone with internal raw that’s compressed.

    • @theolufson
      @theolufson 8 місяців тому

      I didn’t know that! That’s cool. I applaud them for getting around it haha. I’m usually a strong advocate of IP protections especially working in a creative industry, but RED’s patent is broad enough and they enforce it so strictly that it’s actively holding the industry back and I find that extremely irritating as a working professional.

    • @ImaginationVFXhouse
      @ImaginationVFXhouse 8 місяців тому

      @@theolufson I agree. More companies should do what Sony did with the F5/F55 and the Venice 1 where it uses a raw recorder but the raw recorder bolts onto it almost like a red expansion module so it’s pretty much internal without being technically internal. It just becomes part of the camera and easy to forget about. Loopholes.

      How dumb you need to be to post shit like that. They go after anyone who implements a certain algorithm^ you cant patent the idea of in camera compression but the algorithm. It is called wavelet and it is just happens to be the most efficient one and red was first to implement it in camera dn had an opportunity to patent the implementation. Whats so bad about it ? You dont blame sony for sensor patents right ?

    I've been blessed with my Komodo, the additional Komodo's we've rented as well as the V-Raptors we've rented. My personal Komodo body has been incredibly reliable and I use the heck out of it -- and as you know Chance, I film in tough environments (race tracks where there is intense heat with rubber, dirt, rocks flying all over). I've never had issues with the batteries being hot-swapped. I can't speak to RED's customer support but I can speak to other brands...without calling anyone out, I'll be nice and say that "none of them are perfect."

    Beware of the RED Cult that may go after you for talking bad about the camera. LOL. I had a RED Dragon and two Red Komodos and had nothing but problems with them. I sold them and went with Sony FX6 and FX3, and now I have a deposit on a Burano. This is why nearly the entire film industry moved away from RED to ARRI and now to Sony Venice. Reliability and global service for Sony is the best in the business.

Haters gonna hate, but I wanted to get it out there to help people and share my experience. Good call going with the FX line(and please report back on how you like the Burano!). Thanks for watching, I hope you got some value from the video! :)

    Best to stay away from purchasing GM and buy Toyota #Sony. ;) 25:20 You should have (probably still can) disputed the charges for the repair work on your credit card after getting the camera back citing damages for not having it in a timely manner. :D 31:07 dispute the charges, bro. It's over and done with now, but if I could go back knowing what I do now I would have done things very differently and wouldn't have been as much of a pushover 'I just need my camera back please' kinda guy. That said, I'm glad I stood up for myself during the Dragon repair and saved the ~$1400 due to the dishonest quote. Thanks for taking the time to watch and hear my story! Hopefully you got some value from it and perhaps some wisdom should you yourself ever have to deal with RED support. :)

    I didn't watch your whole video, but I did watch up to around the 24 minute mark. All I'd say is sometimes with electronics it's much more cost efficient to replace a number of boards, rather than meticulously go through each board and fault check every single one. You're talking way more than 2 hours of labour to work out which component(s) on multiple complex PCBS are faulty. Also, they might not have the workshop hours available to facilitate such a deep diagnosis. The repair they offered is the repair they offered..

    • @theolufson
      @theolufson 9 місяців тому

      Totally agree with you that it’s likely the most time-efficient (and perheps cost efficient) option. That being said, RED themselves in their terms of service says they own any faulty boards swapped out for customers and refurbish them for future repairs. They also say that the ‘new’ boards they sell customers could actually be refurbished ones. (Which I’m all for - recycling and refurbishing is great for the planet! But there should be an option IMO for a customer to choose between new and refurbished) And I think it’s a fair assumption that they would be making MORE money off doing that vs throwing the faulty boards in the garbage, or they’d have no incentive to do it that way. Just something to think about and consider - they state in their own TOS that they refurbish boards. And perhaps only certain boards are refurbished and I get that. But if it can be refurbished, and it’s more cost effective to do it, I feel like the ethical thing to do is offer that to the customer rather than make them purchase a ‘new’ one and refurbish it to sell to another customer as ‘new’. I do understand that they’re a business trying maximize profits but it feels a bit shady when taken into consideration with everything else I’ve experienced. Thanks for your time watching the video, and your feedback. It’s much appreciated. Hope you got some value out of it! :)

      @@theolufsonold DSMC2 boards are going to be in short supply - I’m sure they’re not manufacturing them anymore. It’s standard practise to refurb boards for legacy electronics. I assume the refurbished boards come with a warranty, so I don’t really see an issue here.

    I have to say, that you went from 6 problems, to three, and the major issue it seems was communication and response time. So I know you were upset for sometime about this. Let’s remember Red is small company. It is not an international company like Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Arri. So their R&D and support infrastructure will be limited in comparison. You have to research and manage your expectations when you invest into a person, place or thing. Now all that being said, Red operates like many shrewd businesses. Instead of doing a recall they prefer to charge for a repair/replacement and upsell the next model to you. Look at Canon with their cripple hammer and now Sony with adding new features (firmware) to lower tier products and ignoring their flagship cameras. These are business tactics that inly benefit their company. When its your company you make the rules. If RED charges $500 to replace a board. Its because it benefits them. Things like prepaid shipping is not provided by most companies. For the same reason. Its always a case by case scenario to me. You choose to play ball or not. Its a learning experience overall between your relationship with each company. Professionals *rely on consistency of a product and pro level support. I think that is worth considering if you plan to stay in the Red ecosystem. What your video showed me was that their cameras are not consistent, and reliable hardware wise. So much so, that buying a used Red without a warranty might not be worth the risk in the long run. And you add the lack of authorized repair centers, and proprietary parts. And now you have an issue with reliability overall. As far as how long they held your Monstro, something tells me, if you paid the repair sooner, it might have been fixed and sent back sooner. But the details are unclear. In the end take all aspects into account, so you can get the best ROI, while managing yours and your clients expectations moving forward. Because we all can feel your pain, and empathize with losing money, and a lack of a working tool or clear communication. I hope this does not happen again, or if it does, you are better prepared for it.

      Hi, thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment. I appreciate your feedback and perspective! I think the biggest thing I learned from everyone’s feedback about my experience so far is managing expectations, and perhaps I was expecting more of RED than I should have. That said, I still strongly believe that the level of poor support and disregard for my needs as a customer is unacceptable from a company of any size selling equipment at that price point. I also wanted to clarify one point in your comment about the Monstro repair and how long they had that camera - I paid that invoice within 15 minutes of receiving it. There was nothing I could do on my end to speed up the process any more and it still was not sent back until after I had left the country for my shoot. In the case of the Dragon, I absolutely could have gotten the camera back WAY faster if I had just paid the invoice. The problem was, they had overcharged me by 2x what it actually needed which is UNACCEPTABLE under any circumstances. If I hadn’t pushed the issue, they would have made an extra ~$1400 for work they never needed to perform and I cannot accept being deceived like that(which was the main point I was trying to make in that story). There are several things I take issue with in regards to RED as you saw in the video, but the reason I decided to make this video was ultimately due to the blatant lies and egregious misquote during the Dragon repair process. Thanks for your time and I hope you got some value from the video! :)

      I appreciate your response as well. Wow you paid in 15 mins and they double charged you! That is really unacceptable. You might want to consider moving on from Red. There is no excuse for that, without an effort on their part to fix the relationship with you.@@theolufson
