Cool Therapy
Приєднався 7 жов 2022
Welcome to my channel where I talk about gardening in cold climate, tropical fruit trees, homesteading and home automation. There is some third degree humor here and there, some old and modern music, and other stuff for a cool therapy if you need one (this is not a medical advice).
How To Grow Bigger Pepper Plants
If you have limited space in your garden, growing taller pepper plants could be an interesting route to explore.

Even with regular pruning and training, a tree grown in a pot can become too big. This what I did to keep my old citrus tree at a manageable size.
Germinate Mangosteen Seeds In Cold Climates

Mangosteen seeds are difficult to germinate in colder climates. But I felt lucky this summer.
Shaping 2 Pear Trees In The Same Hole

I'm shaping 2 young pear trees I planted in the same hole in my small garden. The pruning and training are a bit different than with a single tree. The pear trees are a Barlett and a Summercrisp.
5 Mistakes To Avoid When Germinating Durian Seeds
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
This is for people who would like to try to germinate durian seeds outside of tropical regions, in colder climates for example. Durians are ultra-tropical plants, so I'm skipping the trivial stuff like bringing the seedlings indoors in winter time.

Did they make it? Did you just plant deep?
Do you use a indoor grow lamp (400 w or 1000 w) during the cold months?
I do. I talk a little bit about them on my field test of a Z-Wave switch.
Thank you
My pleasure.
Will it work with sweatsop too?
It depends on your tree, but most probably yes. Annnonas have fibrous root systems.
Would you say less pruning but doing it more often is better than more aggressive root pruning less often?
I'd say it depends on how well you know your plant and what you want to achieve with it.
I've never seen root pruning done this way using a hose. But it teally makes plenty sense😊
It's like with an hairdresser. Most use hair clippers, but the best cut I had was from an old Italian guy with scissors.
@cooltherapy ok thanks 😊.
Extremely great content 😊
Thank you!
LoL
If you haven't grown a citrus from seed, you won't understand the hassle of keeping it indoors over winter when it gets big. Hesitation really is defeat. I look forward to getting back to my plant babies in Canada. Cheers from OZ.
And winter is coming.
Enjoyable explanation!!
Glad you liked!
Where you buy the fresh mangosteen fruits
At the asian grocery store, there are a couple of them in my area.

The great white North.
Has it fruited for you yet ?
Not yet. It produced 1 flower last winter, but the flower died before maturing.
Usually in September, but it started in July this year. I have pollinated 22 flowers already and 3 more should be ready for pollination by tonight or tomorrow morning. This is the first time I have had so many flowers. Usually it's 4 or less because I didn't know I should hand pollinate them so falloff. off.
Thanks. You must be in the tropics to get that many flowers. If so, you don't have to hand pollinate if it's flowering outside, it does help increase the yield. The only flowers I hand pollinate are my butternut squashes because of the short growing season.
Your new edits are awesome 👍🏼
Thanks!
Finally, someone who cut their durian perfectly😁
Thanks!
You would have to have several flowers or at least 2 so that you can hand pollinate it. If not, it will fall off after a month or two.
@HolisticHealthHub-hi4xl, my tree only produced 1 flower last time. And it never reached maturity stage, I believe it was because of the scales, but I may be wrong.
@@cooltherapy My understanding is that fruit will not develop from the flower if it is not pollinated. I hang a small plastic container under mine to catch the pollen and use a brush to pollinate it. There are several YT videos explaining how to do it. You have to watch the flowers to pollinate at the right time and when there is only 1 flower it would be difficult as the female part (stigma) of that flower might no longer be receptive at the time the pollen is shed. If you have other flowers open and ready you can use it to pollinate them.
@HolisticHealthHub-hi4xl Thanks! I'm crossing my fingers to get more than 1 flower next time and hopefully they will not die before opening.
@@cooltherapy keep a close watch and best wishes.
@@cooltherapy Also, once the outer petals split and are yellow you have to use you finger to ope the 3 inner ones and do the pollination. then close them back. The technique is shown on YT videos. If you pollinate then more flowers will appear in not they will fall off and you wont get any more.
No offense, but you sound like Gustavo Fring.
Gus would be more succesful than me on YT.
@@cooltherapy Everything starts small. Keep up the good work and you will succeed! And sounding like Gus is not bad. It is very nice hearing your voice.😁
Thanks. I'm trying to build a good alibi on here... got to justify all those grow lights in the garage in case they come knocking on my door.
@@cooltherapy 😂
You sure dont know how to eat mangosteen..you dont need a knife ..if its perfectly riped you just have to pull the green stem then it will leave a hole that is the time you'll push it open😅
What kind of climate do these require?
Tropical ideally, or sub-tropical. But I'm growing them in USDA zone 5, have to bring them indoors in the fall.
Great job, very meticulous. But in my book, no mercy for pests. Did u start seeing Japanese Beatles in your garden?
Japanese beatles have appeared on my radar. You're right, it's time to wake up my killer instinct.
Bonsai soursop
That's the idea.
You need a bigger pot mate
I'll keep it in this one until I can no longer manage it with annual root pruning.
Its not "rotten", its just over ripe
Indeed. I would say it's perfetcly ripe, but it really depends on personal taste.
I was wondering why mine had two come up. thanks man that's very cool to learn.
You can also try to separate the embryos before germinating the seed.
Use flour, but flour needs to cover them
I just did a quick research, it is also said to work against spider mites, will try. Thanks!
2010 youtube vibe
An old timer, huh?
Actually the best method.
There's the tremor/earthquake method also.
This is a foolish waste of data
Thank you for watching anyway.
Did you consider using 1G fabric pots? It would allow air pruning of roots.
For tree seedlings, fabric pots are a pain in the neck when the time comes to remove the seedlinfs from the pot. So I make my own plastic air pruning pots: the pots in the video are air pruning pots, the seedlings also have denser feeder roots around the central tap root.
Only thing is normally you need both a male and female to flower & fruit unless you get a hermaphrodite.😊
Indeed, but for now I don't look past the coming winter.
I look forward to seeing the updates on this tree over time. :)
Updates will be coming.
LoL
Glad you enjoyed.
Looks not aldente looks too hard
Firm to the bite, but not too hard.
What type of indoor lights are you using for your fruit plants? Your fruit plants look great.
Thanks @bonnienay979 - Grow lights are too expensive. I use regular T8 LED lights, with temperature of 6000K ("white light"). The higher the wattage, the better (more LED cells, more light, but more $).
Thank you so much for that info!! Again your plants look amazing. Looking forward to more of your videos.
I think you should tune the guitar first. E and D are out... my ears hurt.
Sorry, difficult to tune when I'm drunk.
I think I just got put into a trance
I will try to post more.

Gracias.

Some people do not like the smell of durians.
this is the slowest growing fruit tree I ever planted from seed and from cutting
I can't disagree with you. In zone 5 the growing season is very short, so I gave in to the temptation of fertilizing...
Thank you for a very informative video from another gardener getting more into home automation.
Let me know if there are any subjects you would like me to talk about, will try to cover them if I can.
That is a nice collection of Pawpaw trees. I know there is a large community growing Pawpaw in Zone 5. I have never tried the fruit. Did you consider using composted chicken manure pellets as a fertilizer? Big bag is about $12. I use it on all my outdoor fruit trees.
I used the same fertilizer on the other fruit trees I planted at the same time as the mango pawpaw, they did just fine. Somehow, the mango pawpaw could not take that. I probably should have lowered the concentration. I did have a bag of the chicken manure pellets, but I wanted higher NPK values.
Omg XD informative but also funny
Glad you enjoy.
👍🏻 Did you grow this from seed? Did it fruit for you? I would love to see a video of your tropical fruit trees collection.
It's a grafted tree, no fruit yet. Most of my other tropical plants are seedlings, I will try to post some updates.
Great job. I planted 4 in 1 apple tree last fall. I want to experiment espalier shaping against my fence.
If it's a south facing fence, try some less cold hardy trees, like asian persimmons.
@@cooltherapy I love the idea. My fence is west facing. The one spot that is south facing, I planted a Chinese (Korean) mulberry, hardy to zone 6.
I built over sized x6 container few years ago (2’ x4’). I had to rebuild them recently due to wood rot. This time, I lined the sides with foam insulation and used pond liner, from Amazon. This will minimize any moisture making contact with wood.
With a pond liner drainage can be an issue after a heavy rain.
@@cooltherapy the pond liner covers the sides and overlap the bottom by few inches. But in the middle it’s cut to allow drainage.
I guess you don't have problems with the roots of the trees around like I do then (drainage vs invasive roots). I am experimenting with a new concept now...
@@cooltherapy I do not have this issue. Please keep us posted.
Good ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Yes, yopu can! I have 1 in a big pot and now 12 yrs old. No flower /fruit yet
Did you start it from seed?
What kind of lights are you using
I use regular LED lights, mostly at 5000-6000 K ("white light"). I'm also experimenting with warmer lights on some trees.
Nice content 🙏
Thanks!
