I purchased this rifle for the upcoming Quigley Shoot this June. I know almost nothing about the rifle, perhaps some viewers can tell me something about the rifle. It has no markings at all, other than B Derwick 1994 stamped into the barrel under the fore end and 40-65 WCF at the chamber. The rifle came with 100 new unprimed Starline 40-65 WCF brass, a bullet mold, 80 cast bullets, a lovely ape...

A brief and crude introduction to my latest rifle build, a foray into the 6.5 mm caliber craze. This pre-64 Winchester action was re-barreled with a 32 1/4" JC Custom barrel and chambered in 6.5 x 284 Norma. The longer barrel was chosen with the idea of wringing every last bit of velocity from the burning powder gasses.

Doug returns for a visit today with his 280 Ross Sporting rifle chambered in 280 Ross. This rifle is fitted with a factory offset scope mount and a 3.5x prismatic telescope, made in Germany. The telescope has elevation adjustment, but no windage adjustments. Perhaps someone viewing this video knows how to adjust the windage settings in the factory bases.

Congrats on breaking 5000!
Thank you, Ghost Rider. This is effectively the top velocity I can achieve to this point. I may be able to fine tune the loads with a Federal 215 primer, at least from an extreme spread view. Primer pockets are still tight, but bolt lift and extraction are quite hard. Thank you for watching.
Your killing me every time i look at my 243 brass I'm wanting to build that speed demon
There were quite a few challenges for this build, most importantly, getting a rifling button made for a 1 in 20" twist. Then Hart Barrels did not want to rifle the barrel for me due to liability concerns. Eventually, Hart agreed after I signed a waiver. Thank you for watching, and save your 243 brass.
I use to have a 220 swift. That got 5065fps with a 40grn Hornady Vmax. With a stout load of Winchester 760.. 14 twist 27" barrel. Needless to say,..barrel smoked at 1800 rounds.. It sure was fun though
Exactly the caliber and grain load I’m dyin to work up. They run 3390-3400fps from my 16” ar
There is nothing middle about this cartridge. How about Melterstead, Vaporstead, Liquistead? I am sure you have thought of a few:) That is smoking.
Thank you for watching. These loads are right at the top of safe pressure. The primer pockets are still tight, but bolt lift and extraction are quite hard at this point. The groups are good, even excellent, around 3/8ths to 1/2 inch for five shots. I would like to try Magnum primers to reduce the extreme velocity spreads. I would also like to try 30 grain Barnes bullets next, but I don't know how I will chronograph the results. I can't take credit for this cartridge, it was developed by Paul Middlestead in the 1960s. I merely slowed the rifling twist dramatically to reduce drag on the bullet while in the barrel.
Quite some time ago, I nicknamed this cartridge the "22 Mach V" . . .
Very nice 😁👍🇺🇸
Hi Mark, Looks like great fun. Thank you for letting us tag along on your most excellent adventure......Doc
Great review Mark. This year was my second and this year was much more challenging than last year due to the wind. I’m like you. Last year I got hooked from the beautiful countryside, blue skys, history of the area and of course the fantastic opportunities to shoot and make new friends with lots of people with similar values, I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about trying it. Hope to meet you next year.
I hope to meet you next year. Thank you for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment.
Whoa, those are some zippy numbers! Are you sure the chrono display isn't wrong and you're actually reading cm/sec?
Good thing you mentioned that possibility, I will check tomorrow when I try for 5000 cm/second.
You ever get any groundhogs or coyotes with that set up
Only two groundhogs with this rifle. It makes a hell of a mess. I built this rifle mainly to challenge the 5000 fps barrier. Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment.
@@markcarew6724 🤣🤣🤣 I was wondering what it would do to a whistle pig
@waynemayle865 It makes a new definition of "red mist".
I bet at 4900 the primers fall out and resemble mushrooms:) That cartridge is awesome!
I'm going to switch back to Federal 215 Match primers, hopefully the extreme spread narrows once again. I have been trying to save those primers for my big magnum cartridges.
@@markcarew6724 That has to be the flattest shooting cartridge I have ever seen. 0-400 just hold on.
At a 100 yard sight-in, it is currently 4 1/2" low at 300 yards. I can see the 300 yard gong struck by the bullet in the riflescope before the recoil pulls me off target.
That's Ludicrous Speed.
I had been working with the Hornady 35 grain V-Max, but the Garmin won't read the velocity as it is higher than 5000 fps. The Garmin representative claims they are working on several patches, including a velocity patch for nutcases.
@@markcarew6724 I was running the numbers in the Hornady ballistic calculator and they only go up to 4600 fps. You are a pioneer in the shooting sports. I already knew that:)
Awww, shucks. I just want to find the edge of true possible speed in a semi-conventional rifle.
@@markcarew6724 Anything with the word semi is now banned in NY.
@@michaelbrowne3705 Taking cues from Canada, I expect.
That was a great review, Mark! How did you place?
I'm not 100% sure, I believe somewhere around 171st place, so in the top 25% of shooters. I had some bad management on my part at the 605 yards, I had my vernier sighting way too high. I wasted 5 shots figuring out what was wrong. Maybe next year . . . Thank you for watching, Ghost Rider.
I have this exact rifle. Did some digging, and got this. The PPC Target rifles with the target triggers were built on the AI action in a single shot configuration. They had a special serial number sequence that started with an A, B, or C, depending on what year they were built, followed by 3 numerical digits. They were all made between 1987 & 1990. Mine is A831, so the 831st rifle of the first production year i am assuming
@AquaWhale88 Yes, you are quite correct. Sako also built the same model in 22 PPC. There was only one letter prefix with numbers ending at 553. These rifles are quite uncommon in comparison. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience with this rifle and caliber.
@@markcarew6724I just picked up unit A018, 22PPC. Probably the last one I'll ever see for sale, so I went ahead and picked it up. I'll make a video soon with them! Thanks for your video Mark :)

@hxccomms777 You seemed to be doing quite well at the most challenging part of the Quigley Match when I was filming on the line. How do you feel you performed through the entire match? I apologize for the crude video, I can't bear to throw away a perfectly functioning camera, despite it developing a small black spot in the lower right of the image. Thank you for watching.
Bullshit
Would be a wonderful match to attend. Probably never make it in person but thanks to video I never miss it.
Johnny, I live near Toledo, OH., & it's about 1,500 miles to the ranch from here. I first found out about this match during the winter of 2015-16. I have a nice 1884 Springfield "Trapdoor" .45-70 rifle, so I learned about reloading Black Powder Cartridges, made some phone calls to ask questions, loaded up 100 rounds (not enough-need 48 just for the match), & left on Friday, a week before the match. Fuel pump quit Saturday night near Jackson, MN, so, didn't get there until Tuesday night. Long story short, I only hit 7 out of 48 shots, but had a very good time visiting with veteran shooters & learning about the sport. I went back in 2017, 18 & 21. Because of my wife having health problems, & my age (81), the distance, I probably won't get to go again. If you have the chance, & the desire to do this, do it. Your score doesn't matter, except to you, but the experience is worth every bit of it. I'm glad that I have the memories. Afterwards in 2016, I visited Little Bighorn Battlefield, Cheyenne, WY, a cousin in Littleton, CO, then went to Long Beach, CA to visit family, then Rt.66, Barstow & Needles, then Lincoln & Ft. Sumner, NM (Billy the Kid), Davis gun museum in Claremore, OK then back home, 1,600 miles in 3 weeks, 2 days. Other years, Wagon Box Battlefield, Ft. Phil Kearney, Forsyth Massacre site, Ogden, UT Union Pacific & John Browning Museums, Ft. Robinson, Deadwood, SD & many other historical sites.
Looks like a fun match, Mark!
It was entertaining as well as enjoyable. There was a much more relaxed atmosphere than at many matches in Canada.
Glad you got to go that would be awesome

A year ago I bought a L61R in 270win from aroud 1966-1967 for 400€ for the younger of my sons. The first hand loads of 110gr Hornady V-Max with N-135 turned in at <0,5” 😅.. Would trade my Sako M591 in 308win any day for that rifle.. 😂 The older son got a L579 from 1967-68 in 308 and it shoots just as good.
Sako rifles are brilliantly accurate; thank you for watching.
I currently have a high wall in 219 zipper . Also a good looking old rifle, a 29 s weaver scope . the barrel is marked 22-3000. the action is from 1901 I believe My Grand Dad had the action re-barreled in the late 30s or early 40's and finished the gun himself. Not sure who he would have the work done, however he knew P.O. Ackley. and h host of other period "Wild Catters"

Just found this video on a search. A family member had a number of Edwin's pieces - I've got a couple of them now. They're beautiful guns. There's also another .338-06 made by him at auction right now at Switzer's.
I have just seen the lot you speak of in the Switzer's auction, I may bid on it if you decide not to do so. I haven't seen Edwin since last summer, he was in a bad way back then - sadly. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.
@@markcarew6724 That's OK, I'm not bidding on it.
Do you know how many 1895’s were produced in 38-72? I picked one up today in similar condition to yours and am smiling from ear to ear 🤠
I don't know how many were manufactured in the 38-72 WCF caliber; they were built until the mid 1930s. Although, there are fewer than 5000 flat side model 1895 rifles built in all calibers, including 38-72 WCF. Mark at the Cinnabar channel @thecinnabar8442 knows a great deal about these rifles. There is probably good information on these rifles at the Cody Firearms Museum. I apologize for not knowing more about the great rifles. Thank you for watching and enjoy your model 1895 Winchester.

What an excellent rifle, thanks for showing. I load a 40-65 for my sons rifle and it does real well with a 400gr Lyman snover bullet and IMR 4895 powder. That has real good ES when you get it up to slightly over 1500fps

I have one of those but it won't consistently group under .625 at 100yards. My Rem 700's are a bit better.
Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. How unfortunate with your rifle, there may be a bedding issue as these rifles will consistently shoot five shot groups under .250" with factory Sako ammunition.
You definitely need to improve your knowledge on these rifles. This is good for a laugh 😅
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. I have learned much about these rifles made by Savage Arms in the past year, I highly recommend the handbook by Rory Reynoldson - its been a great help for me.
Interesting I don't shoot 6 mm PPC but my dad does. So I know a little bit about it And I think some 6 mm PPC shooters are gonna be interested in that H322 and the Sierra bullets cause that's not typically what they use My dad's rigs are 5K plus and I don't think I've seen one shoot groups like yours I have 5 sako's and none of them. Come close to that that's a keeper
Thank you for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment. For some reason, I often don't get timely notifications for comments on my videos . . . The H322 and Sierra 70 grain HPBT Matchking bullets are old technology - 40 years old. I would imagine most competitive shooters in benchrest competition with the 6mm PPC are using custom made/semi custom bullets in the 65 to 68 grain weight class, like Bergers or Holisters, ect. They would likely be using newer powders like 8208BR or Vihta Viouri Oy N134 and the highest attainable velocities, obtainable only with the use of a 12" drop tube. These rifles are definitely exceptional in the precision department, certainly close to a $5000 benchrest rig - in my experience. This rifle shoots groups at least 90% as good as my Stolle Panda PPC benchrest rifle. Thanks for leaving a great comment, my apologies for the late response.
Buy I really wanted one of them Remington's when they came out. But I couldn't afford one So I ended up getting a Winchester that was much cheaper model 70 in the 220 swift It came from the factory with a fluted stainless bull barrel and a blue receiver and an HS precision stock The only thing i'd done to it was put a jewel trigger in it. And a leupold 8 1/2 by 25 power 30 mm scope I've only ever shot handloads in it. And I never pushed them over 3700 feet a second I will own the Remington someday. Because my dad has one and he will pass it to me.
Hello Mark & Doug and thanks so much for the in depth and comprehensive presentation. We don't see these down in the states. Sounds like the classic case of a rifle getting bad press for the lack of the specified ammunition. So many of our civil war arms suffered a similar fate. Thanks again.....Doc
