M4 Mac Mini SSD Upgrade 256GB to 2TB Internal SSD Upgrade
Today I’ll upgrade my base model M4 Mac Mini from 256GB to 2TB with a drive from M4-SSD.com. Shipping was quick and it arrived only days after departing. The drive comes with install tools to help get your Mac setup. I’ll run through disassembly, and DFU restore as well in this video. A great option for those who don’t want to spend $800 on a 2TB upgrade when purchasing new. I didn't take before drive speed readings as those are available on nearly every Mac Mini review- the speeds are right on par with factory.

What other Mac version to help restoring the Mac mini? Can a MacBook air 2019 do the job? Thanks in advance
Worked like a charm. thanks for the video !
Next time when you do these videos, its best to use manual focus on the unit because every time your hands move it goes out of focus and becomes hard to see.
Thanx, Andrew, for this clean and simple video. I'm thinking myself too to get one... Pro-1: you have expanded your internal storage in a way it should be Pro-2: you have your only TB port still available Pro-3: your new storage is a litte bit faster than the older internal one Con-1: you loose your warranty Con-2: you're limited to 2TB I use the mini as Roon music server with a 2TB SAMSUNG 980 pro M.2 external SSD which holds the music files. So I don't need the TB port for anything else. But your video and the ease it comes with is very tempting to me... (-: See if they ship to Germany and how much custom tax I have to pay for. Not to mention the additional 19% VAT we have in Germany... I suppose I'll end up with around 400 EUR which would be 420 USD . On the German Apple Store they charge 930 EUR for the 2TB upgrade, which is 950 USD... (all INcluding VAT)
What network speed monitor tool you are using for showing network activity on topBar
It's called Stats - github.com/exelban/stats
@asdoesstuff Question how long after install did you perform the SSD test? Since you restored from a TM backup was the Mac mini still indexing your drive when you performed the test?
It was immediately after first boot. Likely indexing at the time.
Can you do memory upgrade next :)
could mini take a 4 t b ?
No its only able to go up to 2TB for M4
Haha, I can’t imagine myself doing this, I could only sense impending disaster 😂
Ever hear of a grounding strap?
And what if you do not have the "Other Mac"??
Windows PC with iTunes....
Does Apple Intelligence work on the upgraded SSD?
Yes- works perfect, can generate images, summarize text etc.
Just ordered mine, thanks!
I just ordered the 1tb.
Let us know how it goes when installing it.
Man, you weren't really prepared. No grounding, no padding. All this on a device whose warranty will be voided if you do anything to it, and you're not doing anything to protect the Mac from damage. Thanks for the video though.
Making sacrifices for the better good of saving folks some cash :) Honestly I've never once used a grounding strap for any of my PC building or working ever- 30 years of this and no issues yet.
@@asdoesstuff Is that really your argument for it? :) Lucky, I'd say. I even saw the spark that destroyed my motherboard once. It all depends on the floor covering, shoes, etc. And your sacrifice isn't necessary. Nobody saves money if you destroy your Mac Mini :)
Technically replacing the drive doesn’t immediately void your warranty, Apple would have to prove that the the act of replacing the SSD replacement was the sole cause of the device breaking or failing. We also have some protection as well with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act that states as such. With something like this though, Apple could easily point to his own video and say you caused it fail because of XZY, but normally replacing a part in a computer doesn’t void your warranty. And worse case if something does go wrong just put their drive back in.
@@BackgroundUser007 Very interesting. I don't know exactly what the regulations are in Germany. But I would assume that Apple has built in checking mechanisms to detect whether someone has opened the device. The question is whether I am allowed to open the device or not. In the end, however, each of us would probably lose a fight with Apple. But as I said, it would be an interesting question whether you lose the warranty by opening and replacing the SSD or not.
Sucker seems useless 😂
Original SSD is 10-layer PCB , this 3rd party Chinese early product is only 4-layer maybe 10-layer or 4-layer doesn't matter or it does? However . rumor says 10-layer PCB will be in the market soon
This is obviously a good thing. The downside is you must have a second mac to be able to restore . I wish the original drive could be cloned onto the new storage in an external drive, then fitted.
I read, You can use a windows pc with iTunes to flash it
@theslacker29ify Apparantly you can't. But you can use it to create a usb installer. So it wouldn't help in this case.
@@jonos138 ok. Thanks for the heads up. I appreciate it.
300 box is still too expensive for 2 tb for me
Wouldn't that have been a little easier to do if you weren't so close to the dancefloor..?
Disk is wrse, but who care ;-) my disk is w: 4GB/s r: 5GB/s ... s 5GB file size .... but what i say, who care, more capacity is more important
Where is the company registered and where it the part made? Will this affect the Apple warranty?
Chyna Chyna
Same question I have about the warranty. I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t void the Apple warranty or your AppleCare. If anyone knows that for sure, let us know.
Im a little lost, so you must have a MacBook in order to do this?
No, on the M4-ssd website they advise you can complete this process with a Windows or Linux PC as well- it's a DFU restore which is possible via iTunes on Windows.
Congrats on the upgrade. Shame, they don't give you an enclosure for the OEM SSD to continue to use it.
The SSD controller is in M4 CPU, SSD board is not having SSD controller, unlike normal M.2 NVMe SSD. So you can't just put it in an enclosure to use it.
I was looking on Amazon for something like this- a nice way to use it as a portable SSD- I'm sure as time goes on this will arrive though :)
I love Apple products. i don't mind the entry price being high and what they give but Storage and RAM upgrades shouldn't be that costly. doubling the memory should be like $50 MAX. They charge $200.
Is that stable?
Been running for several days now- have run some tests maxing out CPU to 100% for 1 hour, no issues, have been playing Minecraft with shaders running on the M4 no issues, no crashes no weird system behavior. I think of this upgrade as simple as replacing a NVME or SSD in a Windows or Linux machine-- the only difference here is the disk is paired with the machine- they're keyed together - this is why it's got to be restored via DFU- this process pairs the machine to the disk- this isn't unusual behavior- Microsoft did this with the very first Xbox- to upgrade the HDD you had to install some software to unlock the disk and then to lock the new cloned disk- it was keyed to the Xbox it came with
@@asdoesstuff Thanks...
Wish they made a 4TB version.
There is
@nicmate2543 Sweet! Do you have a link to the info?
No, on their web page they said M4 Mac Mini only support 2TB max.
What's all this 'we' stuff? There appears to be only one person in this video.
until apple next update and restrict the non oem drive like they did with the ios devices
Gotta love that porn-beat background music! 😉

Just disassemble the whole thing which was designed intentionally to be difficult. Try to figure out how to put it back together. Then live your warranty time in fear of a fault. Having said that, I didn't realize I was signing up for a HOT external NVMe enclosure which never cools down even when in sleep.
"which was designed intentionally to be difficult" <- no it wasn't. Undoing a few screws is not difficult.
The clicking background music is very disturbing and made me nervous
The supplier site looks like a rudimentary shopify site with no information about developer or source of product. I'd probably wait until a reputable supplier like OWC comes out with a product, or look for a dock.
I agree. And supposedly this person got it within a week? And the only person reviewing it? And it came in a box with no shipping label on it? All of this screams scam.
This is giving me ideas for my 2023 M2 256GB. Now I want to do the same. Thanks
You'll need solder.
@ thx. Currently looking for a vid to see if someone has shared this before.
no explanation of dfu or what do with other mac that connects to the min?
$300 USD! you almost buy another mac mini for that price.
doe the internet/network recovery no longer work?
They don't make it easy do they..
Thanks so much for this video! You have saved me $500. Screw apple for charging ridiculous price for upgrading to 2TB!
Regarding the computer you did the DFU restore from, does it matter if it is a newer M series vs and older intel?
It'll be interesting to see if these upgrades prove to be reliable over time.
So long as the flash modules are from a reputable vendor, I'm not sure that would be a concern. The bigger concern would be Apple threatening legal action shutting this operation down.
Good luck with Apple Pay Apple Intelligence. Future macos updates also at risk after this. Better to do this probably 5 yrs from now or more.
Only works with the M4 -- will NOT work for M4 pro-- that's a different PCB
Great Information! Thanks for this Video. I feel like I could & would do this by myself - other than the "other method" by shredding the the 256 GB storage down and glue the new 2 TB Chip back on. That would have been way over my pay grade... But now, since 3rd party storage models are available I in for the race... 🙂 Again: Thanks & Thumbs up. Subscription to your channel is executed...
I would rather just get the upgraded mini that has 24gb unified memory and 1tb. I think it’s like $1000. Which is what you’d have into this setup, an no warranty concerns. That or buy 2 minis and daisy-chain them together.
Dear God, if you care, don't let them brick our units due to "unauthorized SSD" being installed.
Probably best to do this after the warranty expires.
Have problem to set up it's back? )))
Can apple send out an update to make this drive fail once installed?
I bet this will be the case lol
I've heard that these SSDs are really just flash storage modules, assuming that's the truth I'm not sure how something like that could... that being said, with all the counterfeit flash drives and micro SD cards out there, whatever mechanisms Apple puts in place in a sad attempt to block this are likely to be trivial for dedicated users to circumvent. When the video showed off system info, it still reports to the system as an Apple SSD.
Can I import it to South Africa
The cymbals and the drumming in the background made me tune out almost immediately. You do not need that. I’ll go somewhere else for the information. Thank you.
Pull the stick out while you’re at it.
Weak. Light & unobtrusive music is enough to ruin your day. Good thing you didn’t pay anything for this free content.
Why did you even comment? Wah 😭
Nice to finally see some 3rd party SSDs hitting the market. Do you know where is it shipped from?
This one came from China- I wasn't sure anything would arrive but paid with my CC so figured I'd be safe if a brick or whatever showed up. Pleasantly surprised with this so far.
