I thank the plugs are too wet with gas, and a lot of compression pressure seems to be in the crank case. Take the plugs out and clean them off, and not too much "fresh" gas down the carb. I say that because it seem to want to start in the beginning, before all that gas.

Spray some lubricant in those cylinders for a couple of days..then start it.maybe those rings will loosen up..then you'll have compression

My dad drove GM cars with automatic transmissions… in a “college” summer, I worked for a seasonal resort that had a beautiful, 40s Chrysler woody “limo” … for guest pick-ups, that had a fluid drive tranny. I remember only having to lift my foot off the gas to signal the tranny to change gears. It may have been a different year model than your convertible, but whatever, I thought it was the most confusing, unnecessarily complicated operation I’d ever seen.
