    Good show. Part of the reason I retired early from dealership parts is work/life imbalance. I spent 35 years at a few Ford dealerships where working 7 to 5 during the week and 8 to 4 on Saturdays became the norm. I saved as much as I could while we were making good money so I could get the heck out early. Never felt like I had job security. So didnt have kids. Never had more than 2 weeks off in a year and terrible 401k options. SO glad to be out of the business!

    Are you guys able to do a video on taking calls? I work at a tractor dealership at the parts counter and we have people constantly calling in their orders or they are very specific part they need, but are not very descriptive and you can tell they are getting frustrated, best way to take notes, desescalate, etc.

    Two things I believe made the dealer to dealer relationship in our area. We had a parts and service group that meet every month. We were in a large metro area. 20-24 dealers in our group. Second thing was working for Toyota. They encourage and support these dealer groups. I'm retired at this point, but I believe they are all cost+10 dealer to dealer still.

    Help... how do you manage warranty returns? Our shop manager does not use Revolving Door method... bad part in... new part out. He is having techs drop bucket of warranty items, then freely go to parts bins and refill service kits as needed. I am DONE with having to Buy Warranty items due to not having equality on inventory

    New and used car sales managers tend to have much more pressure put on them to sell vehicles. Most sales managers aren't very concerned about parts and service profitability. There has to be give and take from both sides. If it was up to most used car sales managers reconditioning should be charged at cost.

    A tip to counter your "don't keep just one of a tire in stock" is to consider when new model releases, you need to keep at least one of each of the new OE fitments in stock. I can't count how many times we have had a road hazard on a brand new customer car and they come back here to get it replaced and we have absolutely failed if we do not have that tire in stock and ready. Do i need to keep a full set? No, not yet. Customer aren't going to start needing tires for 18-36 months (some sooner, some later), but when that model is a few years old, I will keep a full set (or more as needed).

    Freon is the worst to keep track of. I reconcile my bulk oil every fill up. Bulk washer fluid gets charged out 1 gallon per PDI and used vehicles. The remaining goes to shop supplies. Also reconcile every fill up. Great videos, by the way.

    We should always be asking if they want fries with that? Most customers can relate to needing other parts whether it's a vehicle repair or a home repair. It's terrible going back for something small you missed. Check sales histories on the main part and see if there are common items that are constantly replaced with that part.

    To touch a little bit on having different sources for obtaining parts for the customers when the oe part is on backorder. Coming from a small GM store with a PACE program from the manufacturer, I must say that going aftermarket or just buying the part from a supplier other than GM is a little more limited when upper management wants us to focus on the PACE numbers, especially when the PACE requirements became more strict within the last couple years. When Service asks to go aftermarket because it's an emergency situation or the customer is traveling through, I completely understand. But then Service wants to go aftermarket with every car that we don't have a part in stock for. I don't want to say no. But after a while of Service not understanding the details, I have to stop it somewhere.

    • @partshold8536
      @partshold8536 Рік тому

      Thanks for the insight, John! We know that different manufacturer programs can make things tricky. Regardless, having those aftermarket options ready for emergencies/transient customers is essential. And I think there's some balance to shoot for between hitting those numbers / providing the quickest service possible. Might be worthwhile to have a conversation with your GM about the debate..what's more important? Hitting the PACE numbers or your overall CSI? No wrong answers.

    15:46 I love notifying service customers. Service doesn't always notify them and if I am not getting answers or I don't see an appointment then I reach out directly. I've knocked out multiple old special orders that I knew could be done in the drive by the advisor like a headrest, trim piece that pops on, or other items like that. The service advisor sometimes is surprised but if they aren't going to call them then I will.

    I'm late to this video. This subject could be discuses for days. I'm just going to touch on a couple things. As a general rule you should not be concerned with all like parts in the same bin or area. The exception to this is fast moving parts. You should be more concerned with the most efficient use of space. If every part number has a location in the system you don't have to worry about things being grouped together. You also don't have to rearrange everything when you have new items phasing in. Just find a location where the parts fit the space. We had three floors. Each floor was A, B, or C. Every row, bin section, shelf, and position on the shelf has a location. No part numbers on the bin, just a location tag.

    Just found this channel and as a parts manager myself so looking forward to watching all the vlogs. The biggest issue I have right now in the uk is looking for new people to become parts advisors no one wants to join the motor trade not sure why you can have a fantastic carrer in the trade if you have the right attitude and willing to learn.
