❤hello from canada 🇨🇦
Want a replacement for my Minaret which is getting a little heavy at 2.2kg...and it's a little warm in summer. ;-P Love the weight idea of DCF/Ultra but not the translucency and I'm not sure that single skin tent condensation will cut it in the the SI, with rain and fog, nevermind being careful with the fragility of the thing. Was looking at Xmid Solids until I noticed how frigging huge the footprint is and the reliance on a perfect rectangle. Wonder if I'd be able to find a spot to pitch it! Do like the idea of 1kg, more than 1.5kg though... Thoughts?
Yeah it’s all a matter of compromise at times. I’d check out the Mont and Nature Hike range. Most people seem happy with both these brands. Happy hiking.
*6.1 lbs. Great video.
I love camping in Southeast Alaska, where I live ❤ mild weather plenty of water and firewood 🪵 I hang my hammock and put a tarp over stay dry and comfortable❤️
Sounds great! What a location to do it in also.
Terra nova pioneer 2.
Dislike color likes Wow that survior the wild storm!
Hi Barry I also live in Christchurch and I'm enjoying your channel. I'm trying to find the video where you discuss hiking tent ventilation. Can you please help me?
Hi there. Sorry, that’s not a specific topic I’ve covered in my videos. To be honest, although you can reduce condensation, there’s nothing that will stop it, especially if its cold at night or if you have a single skinned, poorly vented tent.
Camping soon, love these tips!
Thank you. Enjoy it out there. 😀
Great video! easy to understand, and good tips Thank you!
Thank you
They worked well for us in Greenland 🇬🇱 I have a few videos that showcase their performance in high wind speed conditions. 🙏🏼 Expedition tent used Keron 4 GT Black Edition
Yes, you’re right, they are very good tents and in bad conditions, worth every penny.
Love this. Its amazing how much snobbery and silly stuff goes on about tents. The vast majority of camping is summer fair weather camping and a cheap dome tent can handle this with aplomb. If you want it to be stronger and more water proof then you can can seam seal and spray it, swap the poles for alu and stitch stronger guying points. I mean why does everyone have to have a super expensive tent? LONG LIVE the humble dome tent.
Thanks! Yes, it’s quite refreshing to know you don’t need a storm proof tent for every trip you go on. All the best.
Hey mate, I'm trying to find a groundsheet for my Macpac Microlight tent. Any tips?
Hey there. I simply use a $4 blue tarp from Mitre10. It does great.
@wildmountainman1 thanks heaps brother, appreciate the quick response! 😊
I have the Macpac Microlight it's my first can you make more videos
Thanks. Yes, it was my first tent as well. It’s been in many adventures with me. I’m taking a break from making vids at the moment. 😀
👍 Barry ❤️
poor design choice not to be able to close the back vent
Yes agreed.
Thanks for the tips Barry!
use 2 TENTS , they are better than one
What's a Tint?
The price is ridiculous and they have recently increased their prices again. For this kind of money you would be expecting perfection however their not. My soulo is terrible for condensation and they leak around the zips. The ajto is also bad for this too. The company has priced themselves out in my opinion now.
Finally! A bloody unpaid unsponsored actually honest Aussie/kiwi review. Ffs it’s hard to find I hope it isn’t sponsored 😢
Thanks David. No sponsorship. 😀 Enjoy.
I bought a Mont Moondance 1. It has great space and packs down quite small. But does anyone else have a problem with it leaking around the top vent when it rains or even just in a shower?
Hey there, Will. Yes, I know exactly what you’re talking about. During a storm, all the tent was fine, except for the top vent. I can’t think of an easy fix, only to pitch it so that that open part, (even if closed) isn’t facing into the prevailing wind and rain. Hopefully you get many good years out on your Mont.
Thankyou, yes I was looking at the vent area, and was thinking about covering the area with tenacious tape to make it more waterproof :) Also, I have my 30 year old Microlight which is still 100% reliable 👍
I also have a Microlight Tent as well and really like it in bad conditions or in the shoulder seasons. It’s only 7 years old though. ⛺️👍🏼
@@wildmountainman1 I have the problem fixed by seam sealing the zip seam on the vent. It seams like it was overlooked during construction, an easy fix it seams.
@@willboulton2393 excellent, great to hear. I took mine out during Easter and loved it. No rain this trip though.
Great video! I have an old 60L backpack I bought used and has been incredible reliable! But I want to change it since its already too old. Any recommendations for backpacks? Mine is cheap American Outback 50$ and I would want some very durable like this one doesn't matter the price!
Hi there. Thanks for watching my vid. I live in New Zealand, so Macpac are my pack of choice. However, I know that my friends like Osprey, Black Diamond and anything that’s quality and light. Happy shopping.
Had 2 tents fail. first one was in 80mph forecast winds, got flattened, used my rucksack to take the weight of the wind of me inside the tent until daylight. 2nd one got ripped out of the ground in 90mph forecast winds when a gust shot in the door , got dragged along hanging onto the guyline till the gust died, then stuffed the tent with its contents into a survival bag and gtfo. Current tent, double poling it with 10mm poles
Wow! Both those experiences sound really wild. Glad you’re ok and that they have lead you to the bomb shelter of a tent you have now. Hard to go wrong with 2 x 10mm poles! ⛺
Nice stuff!
Thanks!

Excellent advise. Fyi the colour also affects how your tent performs when its hot. If you have a dark coloured tent then you will overheat in warm or hot weather because it absorbs a lot more energy from the sun and heats up inside.
I got the same tent for $14 at Kmart here in Perth, & it's great for the beach! It also has a UV protection rating of 95+! I'm 5' 8" tall, so there was enough space for ME!
Glad you enjoy it. ⛺️😁
Great stuff! What’s that big ye plastic bag? Where to buy it? Thanks!
Thanks. I live in New Zealand and most outdoor shops sell them here, like Macpac shops.
Tents I had at one time were hilleberg, an Akto, Soulo, nallo, namatj, tarra. The nallo being the favourite except for storms for which the tarra was used. The akto was just used for short trips, the nammatj used once in the snow, the soulo not at all. The akto was ripped out of the ground in a 90mph storm, my fault, only damage being a slighly bent pole. Hillebrg recon that the Tarra can survive anything on the planet, which I can believe as sheds wind, having incredible strength aswell. It can also be double polled and secured with as many guylines as you want.
Glad to hear you’ve found some tents that really work for you. Happy camping.
When I was a hillwalker, got a 3 season wild country mistrel tent flattened in a 80mph autumn storm so got hilleberg tents for safety since then ranging from the akto to the tarra. Have recently bought a hillberg anjan 2 3 season tent for solo cycle touring in the UK which has good ventilation, strong, easy to set up, large porch and hope to use it for 4 seasons in the UK as the only conditions it would not be ideal for is snow which I do not intend to be in in the first place. At 4lbs max weight it seems fine and fits in a pannier along with sleep bag and mat.
If you enjoy bad condensation, poor venting, poorly fitted zips, and bad customer service, all at a over the top premium price get a Hilleberg !
When I was shopping for a 4 season tent I considered Hilleberg and every other option. I ended up getting a Rab Latok Summit on sale imported from the UK. It’s low (80cm) and more a 1 person tent but has a HH of 15,000mm and weighs less than 1.5kg. They also have a bigger version called the Latok mountain 2 which is still less than 1.9kg. These are mountaineering tents designed for 8000m peaks so I figured it will stand up to anything. Would be great to see you review one too.
Excellent! That sounds like it comes from a family of really good tents. Hopefully you get to enjoy many great adventures in it.
One thing I’ve effectively used several times in winter camping is a SOL Escape (emergency) bivy…super light and you can put your sleeping bag in it or vice versa to boost the temperature if it’s unexpectedly cold. Great video!..
That’s great. I’ve got a SOL emergency bivy, but have never used it yet for general or lifesaving reasons. All the best out there.
Probably the best advice video that I have seen as a newbie to camping. Thanks for this.
Thanks very much. Glad it was helpful. Happy tenting. 😀
Thank you for the helpful tips 😊
Thank you for watching.
Hello, how have you found the Mont 1 man tent in windy conditions ?
Hi. It handles moderate windy conditions ok, I wouldn’t pitch it in strong wind though. I add a couple of extra guy lines at the top, (loops provided) which helps as well.
@@wildmountainman1 OK thanks.
I would soooo love to do a trip like that!
Thanks. Yes, it was a lot of fun.
1:31 - Have you tested or tried the Nemo Chogori 2 Person tent by any chance?
No, sorry, that’s not a tent I have had any experience with.
Can you suggest me a good 4 season tent for strong wind? Hilleberg Soulo is my first choice but is out of stock in Germany
There so many choices. Any of the Hille red or black labels tents are very good. The main thing is that all of the tent sides slip and allow wind to easily pass over them. You also need 2-3 or more strong poles and fabric that can handle strong wind. If pegged out right, most true 4-season tents will stand up to quite strong winds. Happy shopping.
@@wildmountainman1 Thanks a lot. Luckily i found one shop selling Soulo. Waiting for delivery..
@@bhavesh84u4allExcellent, well done!
Hey do tent bends during snowfall or can it break?
Hi there. Yes you want some flex in the poles and tent itself. This helps the tent move under pressure rather than cripple under the weight. All tents have their breaking point though.
Random question ....do you know where I may get hands on a hilleberg Tarra?? My partner is wanting one based on videos and they must be like rocking horse 💩.cheers
Hey there. Sorry I don’t know where you could get one from, other than from a local store, direct from Hille or from the Hilleberg Owners FB group.
Just to highlight the positives of the tunnel: I usually only bring my Hilly tunnel when I'm in conditions that warrant a pulk to carry the snow melting kitchen and weeks of sustenance required. Two reasons why I favor it: The setup. When I'm using a pulk, I will have my tunnel pre-poled, as in, the poles are already in the tent sleeves. All the pole joints, except the mid joint, are taped together with electrical tape. Once I'm ready to pitch, I connect the mid-joint, and now the tent is ready. This means there's minimal faffing about, so the mittens stays on, which is important. This allows me to quickly and easily set up my tunnel tent, even if I'm pitching solo in winds I can't stand up in, in as little as 10 minutes. I anchor it in the head wind, and let the wind "inflate" the tent for me. It's easier in high wind than no wind. I've not seen anyone pre-pole their tunnel tents on pulks outside Scandinavia/Greenland/Poles, but at least here here it's common. If I remember correctly, I think the type of tunnel tents used today were invented here in Scandinavia, specifically by (Norwegian) Helsport company in the 60s/70s. It's my favorite type tent for winter on Vidda (mountain plateau). Size of the tent doesn't alter the difficulty of set up. It's the same principle for Hilleberg Akto (1.5 kg) as it is for large expedition tents (Helsport Spitsbergen x-trem 4 (6 kg) with 5 m2). Since it's a pulk, weight is of almost no concern. Aside from ease of setup, another reason is the amount of space you can get is good. That's great if you're unlucky to be stranded in a week long blizzard far from civilization. Have a good one. :)
Thanks very much for your comment and insight into how you set up your tent in adverse conditions. That’s quite unique compared to over here in New Zealand, however we very rarely use a pulk, we simply have the gear in our packs for trips up to 10 or so days. You will be able to carry a lot more gear though and cover greater distances with skis. Happy tenting. ⛺️😀⛺️
@@wildmountainman1 10 days of food? You guys are awesome! Happy tenting to you and yours as well!
I’ve only ever carried 7-days of food though. 😁 Some of my friends have done longer self-supporting trips.
GREAT video. So well done. Thank you!
Interesting number plate at the start there "V B4LL" - Volleyball?
Yes, the driver used to play volleyball. 😁
Where was it filmed?
In Canterbury, New Zealand by Sign of the Packhorse Hut.
Hi Barry. I'm a late comer to tramping and slowly growing my skills from your collection, I reckon this is another one of your great vids! Appreciate all the well thought out info you provide and great tips you share. Also love the wee gimmicks and humour you use, keeps it fun and easier to soak up the wisdom. 😊
Thanks very much, Susan. That’s very kind of you. Keep enjoying the great outdoors. ⛺️😁
Very helpful advice, this should have a lot more views!

Hi there Barry, great videos. Keep it up. I'm also thinking of getting the Mont 1 FN as a 3+ season for those every changing NZ conditions, namely wind. I love the style of the Mont. How's it hold up in windy conditions? I'm torn between the Mont and the Wilderness Equipment Space 1 which are both Australian brands, very similar specs, but the Mont has more floor space and vibrant red, yet the WE looks like it might hold up to wind better in a more subdued green. Thoughts?
Hey there Elliot. Good question. The Mont is still a 3 season tent and I wouldn’t want to be out in +80km winds in it. It might be able to handle it, however it’s more designed as a solid 3 season tent. In its favour, it does have spare loops on the top so you down add extra guy lines which helps to secure the tent more and reduce side movements. I did see the Wilderness tent you mentioned. My concern is that I couldn’t see anyway to secure the top portion of the tent. Are there any guy lines or loops on the outer top? Also, one of the ends of the tent is basically vertical and would become a big wind trap which could become a problem. On a recent 7 day trip over Christmas, several of us had the Mont Moondance 1 which survived a pretty awful storm one night. It did leak a small amount through the upper air vent, however we were all very safe and dry in it. Happy buying. 😀
Thanks
After experiencing sand flies I realised midgies weren't so bad.
