Film Soup: Alternative Photography
Film Soup is an alternative photography process where you soak your film (whether exposed or unexposed) in a liquid. I used bleach for this video but you can use anything from lemonade to laundry detergent. Gives your photos that instagram filter before there was Instagram. hahahah. Give it a shot and tell me how it goes for you all!!!!

Making Cyanotypes at Home
Переглядів 108 тис.8 років тому
Cyanotype is one of the oldest forms of photography dating back to the 1840s. What is a cyanotype? Its a UV light sensitive photographic process that creates a blueprint when exposed to UV light. You can use objects such as flowers or transparency prints of photos. Was eine Wasserverschwendung. Das muss doch auch anders gehen!
I loved everything, amazing work! the only thing I have to say is that I suffered watching the water running and running for several minutes and you never closed it :O
Omg thats baby ryan! Im in Ryans class mrs. Jacksons 3rd grade!!!
Muito lindo ok
Can we practice better water usage and not leave that running the whole time? Also what about agitating with your hand as opposed to running water? Just curious
some of the film areas that were fully exposed to the bleach appear to be very nicely developed, looking almost like kodachrome, but a bit better. What if we first removed the film from the canister and placed it in the proper reel, exposed it to bleach, then developed and fixed it? Would that create an improved process for proper film development? I get the artistic aspect of soaking the canister in bleach first, but what if we applied the bleach with the film properly loaded into the reel? Maybe that will bring out the colors better?
So, you posted this video 6 years ago, please tell us you're still making great prints. I've been a photographer for 47 years, and the past 18 years working the 19th centuryprocesses. What I see, is someone with skills years beyond her age. You, ma'am, have got it!!!
does it have to be sunlight or would a desk lamp work
Just found your channel! Fantastic, thank you!
Thank you for making this video! Ive been trying out making photos on film for a while now and i cant wait to try this out!
The print doesnt need any fixing step/chemistry after exposure-washing?
POV: je hebt periode van Dirk Janssen
You should also explain the use of the arrowroot starch and potassium dichromate that comes with the kit.
Hydrogen peroxide, not bleach. It goes instantly bright blue. Magic! The prints can be toned with tea solution, black or green for a brown tint. Try it with your “washed” out print, it’ll bring back the color.
Wow what a nice voice. You should do podcasts.
hi, I did the same, but my film stuck together. What to do? Please help me.
Chemical. You apply chemicals.
I see that this video is three years old but I find it to be very interesting and something I need to try. Do you still do this by chance and have you ever used any other chemicals besides bleach?
Fabulous video. I'm bookmarking it for reference because it's clear you know what you're doing.
Your video was used for our art class! Thank you! Mine turned out ok, but it can be tricky to figure out how long to leave in the sun as it changes intensity and positions. A learning process!
The track you art I like it all
thank you so much
Wow so creative 😍😍😍
Awesome video! For your photographic print, did you still use sunlight exposure or a UV box instead? I want to start making prints again with old negatives, but I can't afford to build my own box
great job on this especially the filming and editing, actually dont use bleach use hydrogen peroxide. I did a tutorial on my channel a few months ago also on how to use this paper in a medium format camera you may dig that also.
RIP Aloy.
You can also dye the Cyanotype using green or black tea
Excellent video Dominique. Thank you for sharing 🌷💖🌹
This was so beautiful AND so helpful! Thank you so much for posting this, it was a pleasure to watch.
wow
Can you do this process on fabric?
At 1:30 she says "use a material that can handle liquids, such as canvas, watercolor paper, FABRIC..."
what do the chemicals cost?
SB C 20-30 bucks on b&h
you recommend do the film soup after or before shooting? how many time i let it dry before use/revelate?
This looks like such a fun hobby!
As per your thumbnails, I watched this to find out how to do pictures of people with this method, but it's never mentioned. How is that achieved?
Not at all. You cannot use this paper in a camera. It would need days, even weeks, of exposure time. If you have an old glass negative, no problem. Put it on the cyanotypepaper and expose 10 to 20 minutes in bright sunlight.
@@romar1581 Thanks so much! I did some more research and you can photocopy a picture onto an overhead projector sheet and do it that way too! Great video.
@@reillybooks it is not my video. You need a negative, which you can easily make yourself by converting any picture to grayscale, then invert the colours and print it on transparency film. Do not forget to mirror before printing.
@@romar1581 Thanks for the clarification. I was reading your comment on my phone, and it didn't show me the video or creator when I read it.
chlorine based bleach does not work, use peroxide based bleach to obtain a brilliant blue result.
I beg to differ.
Try you highly diluted hydrogen peroxide to quickly oxidize the print
How did you print the portrait about the beginning of the video?
Get a transparent negative print.
Great video! Super easy to follow your directions
Excellent video!!!! New to this process and this video explained it perfectly. TFS!!
Can you use p**s? :)
This is awesome. Thank you!!!!
Thanks for sharing this! Going to try this with my son for a science lesson soon.
This is a fabulous video, thank you! I've been looking to incorporate this into my gum bichromate printing as a replacement for the cyan layer as some other gum printers have done, and watching this helped a lot in understanding what I'd have to do :)
Very cool results. As if the bulbs in this make thoughtful peek holes to highlight the important parts of the frame. I loved that candystore series.
Does the paper go under the glass and the materials go on top?
Tenise Holloway if the material is alive it will release condensed water vapor forming droplets that will dilute the solution in the sheet of watercolor paper. I put a plastic film over the paper then the plant part and over all this a glass plate. It work
Thanks for posting your video, very helpful!
helpful and clear! thank you!!
I love these film soup videos please post more
Have you ever tried “PISS” soup?
Fantastic!!! Thank you soooo much...did you make the transparency yet?
