Never too late to explore!
I took to the skies at 69 and earned my private pilot license in 2018 at 70 years old. In 2022, my passion shifted gears to electric vehicles, and I became the proud owner of a 2023 Lucid all electric car. This sparked the creation of my website www.evrangecalculator.com and an Apple App I developed to help EV enthusiasts calculate efficiency and range projections.
Now, my latest passion is drone videography, where I capture and share stunning views of the places I visit. What’s next on the horizon? Stay tuned for more adventures! Join me on the journey by hitting the Subscribe button.

You don’t need a billion apps, just A Better Route Planner.
Agreed, ABRP is a good app. The advantage I find with apps like Electrify America, is real time station info. I have found second party apps giving inaccurate info. Thanks for your comments.
We charge our Tesla on a regular 110V outlet/receptacle in our car port & it picks ups 40 miles overnight. Plenty for daily commute and errands. In my area it works out to 13 dollars each month for electric.
Thanks for sharing that information! It is great to hear your experience.
I'm 71. No chance. The government has no intention of building an adequate electrical infra structure to support our present car ownership which means they want to reduce our personal mobility. They tell us 'climate change' is the reason when the total carbon foot print of ev's is not small. Plus, observe what transportation the oligarchs and politicians use. Trudeau travels with a caravan of massive suv's. I don't trust corporate government so much nor the cherry picked science they push. At the moment the powers that be are not ruling in the best interests of the planet nor the populations at large.
I appreciate your perspective! It's important to consider all sides of the EV discussion, especially regarding infrastructure and personal mobility. Your insights really highlight the complexities of the situation. Me? I'm an optimist who looks forward to a better world.
@@LifeAfter70-years Thanks! Attitude is very important. Life is what we make of it after all.
Nothing like a Tesla, no matter your age! I am a "bit"past 70, and I purchased a. new to me -22 Model S, last Memorial Day. I still have my Lexus GX460 and that is a great one as well!
70 is the new 60! I'm definitely getting an EV and doing a lot of research on them.
I agree! You’re going to love it!
I am 80 and driving a KIA E-Soul for four years. A new KIA EV3 is to be delivered next week and the E-Soul will be kept. Your presentation is balanced and well put. As much as I love the EV the improved safety technology is what really intrigues me. EVs are not for everyone just yet but the change is needed. We have a problem with global warming. LA is burning. Action is required. I rather like being one of those who help. D in Ireland
I 100% agree with you! Thanks for the compliment!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I was hoping you were going to show your car! 🤔
It is in the trailer at the very end of my video on Fast Charging. I plan to do a more in depth video on my Lucid in the near future. Thanks for watching!
You should steal a term I heard for a gasoline-powered vehicle. (My son, who had an EV before we did, found it on the 'net.) DDB: dead dinosaur burner. Charging at home: we have a Rvian--branded charger, which is set up on the outsoide wall of our garage.
I passed my test in1965 and I love my Skoda Enyaq.
I’m 84 in a few months and I’m on my second EV; an MG4 Trophy. I’ve had no problem with the technology, charging or use - being a ex computer engineer helped. I recently took an IAM Roadsmart senior driver assessment and was marked “Excellent”. UK.
Congratulations! I'm sure you are a young 84
Purchasing any other EV than a TESLA IS ILLOGICAL! This is the only reason anyone has a bad experience with electric vehicles. ALL cars other than TESLA are OBSOLETE once Full self driving switch is turned this year. Not only the Supercharging network but the fact that a 2019 tesla is the same as a 2025 tesla. The constant over the air updates and improvements that are done as fast the thought is created it is implemented, not just on the current model, but on all models going back. No Other manufacturers can do this yet and will never be able too, no other company has or can build the 10 BILLION dollar computer network to constantly update and monitor their vehicles, this fact is Always left out in any discussion about Teslas Superiority, and the fact that THE COMPETITION HAS NEVER CAUGHT UP, let alone surpass. By the time the competition figures out what's going on Tesla has already gone miles past that point. Most manufacturers have a 5 year lead time on model changes, Tesla makes 20 changes in a week to the models running down the line. When a improvement is thought up it is implemented right then and there, not 5 years from now on the next model year.
Thanks for your thoughts. It seems like you are very enthusiastic about your car and I appreciate you sharing!
Being well over 70 and having two EVs (2020 Kia Niro EV and 2023 Rivian R1S), I like what you said. I haven't experienced Lucid. Our Kia is a good example of an ICE car that was redesigned to be an EV. There are a few disadvantages to that design, but the only one that counts is the nonexistent frunk. Enjoy!
I hear you on the frunk. Glad you’re enjoying your EVs! I love my big frunk! :)
Interesting comment about wanting to learn, interested in tech. My wife can’t stand tech, but she finds our new R5 far far easier to work out than my old Audi. She just gets in it and goes. That’s it.
I love not needing to use a car key or even push a button to go. Just get in put in drive and off you go. I get in my wife's gas car, and I'm confused and lost with key, start buttons and all the rest. It's like stepping back into the past. I'm glad your wife is loving the tech in an EV! Thanks for your comments.
Liked your video. I am 50+ from India, driving a BYD E6 since 23 months. Have solar panels at home. Absolutely loving it.
I'm in my 70s and my older house didn't really have room in the circuit breaker box. What I did instead was on the other side of my garage wall is my laundry room, and dryers run off a 240V/30A plug/circuit. I bought a Splitvolt ($300) that you plug into that outlet and you plug your dryer into it and it has another plug that you run out to your car. It auto-switches to the dryer when you use it, then auto-switches back to the car when the dryer finishes. I just had to buy a 30A extension cord to run through the wall out to the car and a 30A charger adapter. A small RV camper plastic power cord hatch (2) cover the inside/outside hole in the wall. It works great and only slightly slower than a 50A. BTW, older houses have 3-prong 30A plugs, newer are 4-prong plugs so you need to get the right box. Splitvolt isn't the only box like this. Box + adapter + extension cord cost me about $425 when I got it 1+ years ago.
Good to know, thanks for sharing. One point, you probably already know, if the breaker is 30 amp the max pull needs to 20% less. That equates to 24 amps max.
@@LifeAfter70-years Yes. I was worried about that, but found the Tesla automatically charges at the reduced amps when you plug in at 15A, 30A, 50A circuits.(And the Splitvolt text on the front says warning max 24A.) I don't know if other EVs do that automatically.

For me, the life convenience is significant. Transportation appliance. A personal Jeeves. Changes the paradigm of 'car'. Re-fuel in the garage. No key, just my watch or phone. Don't turn it on or off. Warm and cozy before departing. With FSD v13, push a button and it backs out of the driveway, takes me to work. The commute is so quiet and peaceful, enjoying my coffee. Errands are easy, locks as I walk away, boot opens when I stand next to it, easy access to storage. Climate control for the dog while I'm in the store. When I'm driving, it most often knows when to put itself in reverse or drive. Downsized from a '22 X3 to cover most of a 'used' '24 Model3 LR AWD. LOVED not being forced to do business with a dealership. Large percentage of the model choice was that it has evolved and been refined over quite a long time (defect reduction) secondary was fun to drive, zippy, super efficient. FSD wasn't on the list but due to it, this has surprisingly been a way better road trip car than the X3: it chooses where to refuel and drives itself most of the trip. Just turn it on for a month for $99 when needed. A bonus is while in a different town, it drives you around like an Uber. Having an FSD car on future trips is a must for me now. For seniors, their independence would be greatly extended with FSD and definite conveniences with EVs generally speaking. The politics of fear are hilarious and sad to me.
FANTASTIC POST!!! You covered so many of the things I love about my EV. All of your points are on my to-do list for an upcoming video. Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi Paul, Just came across your video. The life after 70 heading attracted me. I am 72 and purchased my first full electric - Ioniq6 nearly 2 years ago. I live in Scotland, but I had a condo in Palm Springs for 15 years so the background in your video took me back there. Absolutely love my EV, agree with everything you say. Having a home charger is a life changer and I would be hesitant in recommending an EV (at this stage) to anyone who doesn't have home charging mainly because of price. Fast public charging here is approx. 97cents/kwh. With subscriptions that can be reduced to 50cents. Home charging is about 10cents for overnight charging. Charging points are standardised over here to use CCS combo, so we can use Tesla stations if we want.. If I have any issues with the car is that is too much tech at times. I have no range issues as I always want to stop after approx 200 miles for a bio-break and with fast charging I can add that range back on in 20minutes. I shall look out for more videos as it is interesting to see California driving +
Thanks for posting. Great information you shared. I bet you miss the sun of Palm Springs. Ionia EVs are great cars. Thank you for watching,

55 yo here own a Tesla Model 3 and Nissan Leaf in Western Australia . I have solar panels on my roof , so my "refueling" is very low cost. My Son and Parents have EVS also. I hope Lucid does well, their cars look amazing. Thanks for the Video, hope you encourage more folk to buy an EV.💪😀
You have EV family. Congratulations! Thanks for watching!
I have a Hyundai Ionic 5, and herd that Tesla opened up Magic Dock Station at Carson location. I registered with Tesla app, and drive there . I watched some you tube videos about the Magic Dock, and tried to use it, but was a little confused. There was a Bolt owner charging, and he came over to help! It was nice to get a little help!
It is always good to find friendly help at the charging station.

Thanks! Being an old fart is not so bad.
@@LifeAfter70-years its even more challenging here in Thailand and Chinese EV Cars , I have Zeekr X , now its down to getting the menu sorted on screen and changing the way Key Fob works , FOB Batteries only last 1 month , not good changing cr 2450 3 volt batteries every month. SINCE They only gave us 1 FOB and a Credit Card as Backup to open and close doors and run vehicle - still waiting for an Iphone App to run car and monitor charging.
lets put it another way is NOT POLLUTING LIKE A DONKEY a mistake.
Thanks for your comment. I not sure what it means, but I do like Donkeys.
75 and can’t wait to get the new Rivian r2.
A cheap used EV makes a great second car for around town. And a great way to ease into the whole EV charging lifestyle. Buying an expensive new EV as an only car is a colossal mistake for most people. Not a drop in replacement for a gas car.
Thanks Paul for the videos. I'm 68 & now looking forward to life in the 70s thanks to you. Looks like your in Palm Desert (?). What a beautiful place to enjoy life... Bill
Thanks for watching!
65 years old bought me a Tesla model three standard range +6 months ago. It’s been great.
Our EV good for short trips, charge at home. For long trips or towing we use our Ram.
I’m 79 and I’ve had 2 Volts, a Bolt and now an Ioniq 5. No problems except for the Hyundai service network. Before the Volts I had an Audi Q7.
I am 76 years old and I have owned my Cadillac Lyriq for almost two years. I love the car. I charge at home in Tucson, Arizona where I charge overnight for about 9 cents a kWh. I am probably a little biased because I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and I worked for IBM developing complex hardware/software products for 43 years.
I'm not surprised you love the car, with a background like yours you're probably a discerning driver.
@ There is an important difference between ICE vehicles and EVs that a person with an EV needs to understand. ICE vehicles get more miles per gallon on the highway than in the city. EV are just the opposite getting better efficiency in the city than traveling at highway speeds. You need to know the efficiency of your EV at various highway speeds. My Lyriq gets about 330 miles at 70 mph, 270 miles at 75 mph, and 245 miles at 80 mph. Those numbers are for battery going from 100% to 0 %. Your trip can also be impacted by very high or low temperature and change in elevation with elevation being the bigger factor. I see that you are close to Indian Wells. I have enjoyed going to the pro tennis tournament many times at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
@@johnmccauley1035 You are absolutely right correct. I have a video planned in the very near future regarding efficiency. I even created an app and a website on that subject (see the link in the description). My first goal is to acquaint those considering an EV with only basics. It's a learning process, as most of found out after getting our first EV. It is important. Thanks for your post!
The lucid air pure only 4.5 seconds from 0-60. you said you had the lowest trim. If you have the lucid air pure touring then that's 3.5 second but thats significantly more expensive than the lucid air pure. The lowest trim level is 4.5 seconds not 3.5.
My Lucid has AWD which I don't think they offer anymore for the Pure. I believe 4.5 or 3.5 are both like a rocket.
I’m 77 and on my 2nd Tesla Model 3. I enjoyed your video, but have some issue with your comments on home charging. As a retired person I have found that home charging on 110v is perfectly adequate for me. I typically keep the car charged to 80%, as recommended by Tesla and only charge to 100% at home when I am planning a road trip. For everyday driving I use very little charge. 110v gives me about 3% charge per hour which easily recovers the battery to my desired charge level, usually overnight. In my opinion level 2 (240v) charging is unnecessary unless you are a frequent driver or daily commuter. Most of my trips are only 20 - 30 miles. Think twice about spending the money to install a 240v outlet or a level 2 charger.
I don't disagree. If you don't need 240 volts charging, 110 works just fine. I uploaded a new video a couple of days ago on home charging.
Thanks, Paul, for another very informative video. I am intrigued by the idea of having a car that can be charged at home and, perhaps even more so, by the fact that it can be periodically updated via its onboard computer. However, I think that the big stumbling block for most people in purchasing an EV is its initial cost. Even in the more affordable range of cars like a Kona or Kia, here in Canada, it will cost you, with government rebates, at least $17K more to buy the EV version. For a retired person, who puts only a few miles on the car in a year, the savings on gas and repairs over the years unfortunately would not offset the initial premium paid for the EV. As an aside, being a grandfather myself, I especially liked your video of you flying with your granddaughter.
Thank you! I'm glad you saw that flying video with my granddaughter. She is special. As for the cost, I agree, but prices have come down since I made my purchase. The used market has some great buys. Thanks for your kind comments.
I'm a 50+ baby that bought a used EV about one year ago. After 15k miles, I'm not going back to ICE!! I love listening to music, and driving an EV means all is quiet and you can enjoy music without cranking the volume up.
I too am 77 and bought an EV this year. If you can charge at home (or work) it is a no brainer. It costs just a fraction to run compared with an ICE vehicle. Very little maintenance required, fast, smooth and quiet to drive. I don´t do many long trips so it makes complete sense. In Europe there is a fairly extensive EV charging network so range anxiety is not such a big issue here.
The road trip concern depends on where you live and where you go. I take several road trips each year in my Mustang Mach E standard range. My experience has been similar to my ICE days in sense of when and where I refuel. With EVs, you can stretch your legs, use the restroom, and maybe get a small snack while it’s fast charging. With ICE, you have to do that separately. Time-wise, it has been a wash.
So I’m not over 70, but am getting there at 65. You could call me an “early adopter” of EV’s, having driven EV’s exclusively for the last 5 1/2 years. I started with a Kia Soul EV and learned quickly that it’s low range of around 90 miles was not sufficient for rural traveling here in Maine. But it was a great introduction to driving an all-electric car. So I sold it and bought a used Chevy Bolt EV. It had phenomenal range at 260+ miles in the summer and around 190 in the winter. But since I take long road trips to western PA, a 700 mile journey one way, I soon learned that the Bolt was not designed for fast charging at DC Fast Chargers! Whereas a Hyundai Ionic 5 can charge from 10-80% in about 20 minutes, it would take the Bolt 1 1/2 hours! Plus, like all non-Tesla EV’s, the reliability of getting a fast charge at non-Tesla DC Fast Chargers was rather sketchy. My partner has a Tesla Model 3, and taking road trips with it was a breeze! The Tesla Supercharger infrastructure worked 99.9% of the time, compared to about 70% of the time for the others companies. It’s getting better now for non-Tesla EV’s since Tesla Superchargers are becoming open to charge your non-Tesla EV. But when I had the opportunity to purchase a Model Y with financing at .99% interest, while I was paying 6% interest in payments for my Bolt, I went for the Y. And thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentive and the Maine EV incentive, I was able to receive $15K in rebate off the price. Now I don’t like supporting a CEO like Tesla’s, but neither do I like supporting the Saudi supported company of Lucid or the fat cats of the legacy OEM’s. We live in a world of necessary compromises. So I focus on the performance, reliability and stability of the EV company. Tesla has proven it’s worth in all these areas, with some improvements needed in service, but tolerable. But I do like what I see in design and innovation in many EV’s. The deciding factor for me is - Reliability, range, ease of charging on road trips and ease of operating and navigating with. Tesla checked off all these boxes for me. But if another EV does it for you - go for it! We need all the EV’s we can get to displace the polluting, toxic fossil fuel explosion machines out there! To create better local air quality, and to move to sustainability in transportation. By the way, the first two EV’s I bought were used. The Tesla Model Y is the very first new car I’ve ever owned. So my rather rapid evolvement to the Model Y was because I didn’t understand how important range and ease of charging on trips was for me. I really needed something better to visit my 10 children and their families, scattered over 7 states!
22 cents per kWh!? That’s a lot. 😢 Here in the UK I pay 7p per kWh on an overnight EV tariff 😊
Well done, Paul.

I am at 3:99. Elon asked, If you want to go to university and work for me, let me know. He must have received and encouraged a lot of fanatics that now make our cars.
I am 79; I met two people that told me the Tesla was the most beautiful toy they had ever had. Once the price dropped. I bought one sight unseen and driven undriven. I love it. As I get accustomed to its controls I like it even better and It is charged from the sun each day. Beautiful!
EVs are definitely fun. Most people that are critical have never experienced the joy.
I am 65 and retired. I am now on my third EV and would never buy another ICE car. My first EV was a Hyundai Kona KV which was built on an ICE platform, it was a good car and surprising efficient for an EV that shared an ICE platform. I replaced this with a Telsa Model Y Dual Motor which was great car, but I wanted something a little smaller but similar range and have just replaced it with a Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor. The latest Model 3 is much more refined than the current Model Y. I studied Physics at university, had an engineering & management career in global data network communications primarily supporting the financial sector, I have used and programmed computers in many shapes and forms all my life, and hence I am extremely comfortable with the latest technology and scientific theories. What I like about EVs is how they are mechanically much simpler than an ICE car as they have fewer moving parts, no gearbox, and this all reduces wear & tear plus wasted energy due to friction. I've noticed the software on Tesla cars is significantly improved compared with legacy motor manufacturers. With a Tesla there is regular cycle of software updates which add new functionality and fixes. I took delivery of my Model 3 in early Dec, and 2 weeks later there was a major software upgrade with lots of new useful functionality and in-car apps and that included being able to use my Apple Watch as a car key. I don't manually change the car's clock for winter and summer time anymore as this happens automatically ... unlike my previous BMWs and Mercedes cars. If someone parks too close to me in a car park, impeding access to the driver's door, I can use the Tesla app on my iPhone to remotely drive it out of the parking space, viz. summon. I do most of my charging at home which significantly reduces cost, but the Tesla super charger network combined with the in-car navigation makes planning long road trips a breeze. When I first got an EV, I used to have battery capacity set to display estimated available range, but now I have it set for % utilisation, as range anxiety is no longer concern, especially when your EV can comfortable cover over 300 miles on a single charge. I live in the UK, so all Tesla cars, like in Europe, are fitted with CCS Type 2 charging sockets that support both home charging and rapid charging, up to 250kW/h.
FANTASTIC POST!!!! I hope others considering purchasing an EV read this. Thank you!
I’m 61 and my spouse is 69. I bought my Bolt EUV brand new in 2023. My spouse was skeptical but went along with it because he trusted me. A year later he needed to buy a new car and he got really used to driving and operating my Bolt so he bought a Blazer EV exactly one year later and he loves it. We’ve driven gasoline cars once or twice when guests are in town and have us drive for them and it’s weird. Gasoline cars are just old fashioned to us now. You’d have to get used to an electric car and then drive a gasoline car again to know why I say that. If you know you know.
That’s awesome that you both made the switch! I know what you mean about the “weirdness”. I also feel like it is a step back into the past when driving a gas car. Thanks for the post!
I'm 73 and this spring I terminated my motorcycle trike company and immediately sold all my crappy ICE vehicles so I would stop buying transmissions and engines plus all the money drain associated with ICE. I purchased a 2020 chevy bolt and a 2020 kia niro. My fuel costs are now 10% of what they were and my maintenance is zero. Previously I owned a Nissan leaf which also cost zero to maintain plus I charged at my shop where electricity was free. My cost of fuel for a year was less than $50. I have only used DCFC once as I charge at home for 13 cents a kw. I will never ever go back to ICE. I also have a UA-cam channel and will be talking about my EV opinions and experiences. Rule of 3
Thanks for sharing your experience. There is no question that EVs are much less expensive in the long term - and the short term cost is coming down. Thanks for the post!
I’m 70 and I’ve been driving electric since 2017. I expect to be getting my third ev this March and will drive ev as long as I’ll be driving
Thumbs up to you. Welcome to my decade decade!
I’m 72 and recently lease a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 limited for 3 years. I used it mostly for local driving. It’s very comfortable and gets up to 278 miles on a full charge. I recently installed an EV charger in my garage, so most of my cost now is minimal. I now charge it during non peak hours at night. If you are not sure, I believe leasing maybe the way to go…
Leasing is a great option if you want the latest technology. I love the car you selected.
I am turning 70 this year and purchased an EV three years ago. My motivating factor was not missing a new technology. Because we love taking long road trips we chose a brand with a superior charging ecosystem. We’ve taken several thousand mile trips and have not experienced a single hiccup.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like you found the right car for you!
Son has Y. Based on thatvI've ordered Aptera since I'm too lazy to plug one up. My trips are seldom over 50 miles. Backup is the largest 2019 Silverado 2500 since farming and rental operations require some heft.
That sounds like a great combo of vehicles! Thanks for posting!
