I apologize for the poor camera work in this video. Matthew, who is learning videography at our church, has taught me a bit since I shot this.

    I've always been a kind of garage guy... I'm 65 years old finally retired I've got anvils hammers, Forge, tongs still not quite ready to give up, still in my learning process. I have to be around it. I'm wanting to make my own brake drum forge I'm still trying to find a reasonable heat source I'm seeing lump coal for sale I don't know if that's enough to generate the heat that I need .... Any suggestions on cheap heat source. I am on a fixed income. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Love your videos please keep posting.

      Lump charcoal is a good source of heat. It's clean and it can reach welding heats. But it takes twice as much charcoal as it does coal because you cannot pack charcoal the same way you can pack coal. because it can be packed, coal holds the heat in better than charcoal. Charcoal is also good if you have neighbors close by, because it smells like you are grilling out. Coal has a distinct smell that not everyone enjoys.

      Thankfully, with round stock, it doesn't show when you have to twist it into the right orientation. Still a bit embarrassing when it happens though.

      🤣🤣 Yeah! That was a painful lesson. Welding those pieces together threw a lot of scale. I've never had it fly off of the power hammer and hit me in the face.

      I hate going back to old projects, but it's like they haunt me every time I see them laying around. It's never easy losing a pet. When we had her put down, I fought with myself that there must have been something else we could have done. But I know there was nothing.

  • @666Demonskull
    @666Demonskull Рік тому

    Instead of putting the sword up for sale, try a raffle. If it's advertised on here, the crowd funding and both SBG and MER, for $20 or a little more you have the potential to raise a great deal more than what you would sell it for. You could link the crowd funding to each site and they purchase their tickets through the fund. You could also add features to give advantages to those who contribute more. Something like a buy one ticket/chance for $20 or get 6 for $100. Good luck I'll be watching for the updates!

    ..Good luck with the project! Is the blade going to be stacked damascus or is that just the engraving along the spine...?

    • @ichtheanforge6468
      @ichtheanforge6468 Рік тому

      The spine will be wrought iron while the edge will be stacked damascus. The jury is still out on exactly how I am going to put the pattern into the spine. I have a few ideas.

    Sorry if I just wasn't listening well enough, but what steel did you use for this? Or what grades of steel do you believe are well suited towards tools? Affordability? Applications? Longevity?

    • @ichtheanforge6468
      @ichtheanforge6468 Рік тому

      I used an old coil spring for this. It makes pretty good punches and things, but you MUST beware that there could be microfractures in it that would cause it to fail. I know where this spring came from and I know that it had a pretty hard life. But I believe it will hold up at least for its intended project. Some smiths recommend things like S7. Blackbear Forge has plenty of videos on the subject of tools. If you aren't familiar with that channel, check it out. If you tell him I sent you....he won't know who you are talking about. 🤣
