    The personification of utter savagery was dempsey in 1919. Speed , power in both hands , devastating uppercuts .the crowd of that day must have been in awe of what they witnessed. Great tribute to the mauler . A nice touch with the two last tracks .

    King of lightweights? Duran would have busted his ribs and jaw within 5 rounds...

    His hopping stance reminds me of Sugar Ray Robinson's. The way he always hops back into position was something you rarely saw back in those days. He was ahead of his time (like most of the greats).

    I'm so confused..how is this better than todays elite boxers..?

    • @havrisen6620
      @havrisen6620 7 років тому

      Yes, you obviously are. The fact that you have to use the word "elite" for today's boxers tells quite a lot. Benny Leonard reigned over the deepest pool of Lightweight skill and talent that the history of the sport has ever seen before or since. He was the King of that badass era of Lightweights. You could take any Lightweight in the top 20-30 of that era and put them in the ring with today's Lightweight champion (who is it?) and he would beat him 9 of 10, if not 10 of 10. Why? Fighters of that era were taught better, trained better, were better conditioned, more seasoned, more hungry, and tougher. They also had to fight a lot more competition and a lot more often. That's just a fact. In truth, it wouldn't even be fair to today's "elite" fighters to be pit against one of these murderers. Today's "elite" fighters may even be considered "tomato cans" for that era. Athletes today are bigger, faster, stronger than ever. Boxers aren't athletes, theyre fighters and entertainers and I don't care how athletic you are...I don't care if you're a prime Roy Jones Jr, these guys fought using their minds, heart, and conditioning. Fighters today rarely think. The ones that didn't do a lot of thinking were atleast conditioned to go 15 rounds if not even more, and they were rooted in the fundamentals and techniques of their trade, and were tough as nails. You simply can't even compare them. There were only 8 world champions at any given time in the sport, with many, many more fighters than today and with a lot more experience. Every fighter in each division ranked in the top 30 would be considered "elite" by todays low standard. But back then, with so many great fighters and only one world champion per division they were simply called "contenders". You say "elite"? Elite? LOL! Back then theyd be called "pretenders" at best but I'll call them tomato cans.

    This is why I'll always prefer boxing over MMA. When boxers are skilled, as Benny Leonard was, it becomes an art.

    I been recognized Benny for his skills. Wonder why he hasn't been belittled or scrutinized like say....Floyd or Muhammad, or Sugar Ray or Roy Jones or Pernell Wittaker and so on? Is because he is..........................from the 1920's?

    Don't be so sure about that, boxing at that time was way more predominant than today, and the competition was way higher. And it was practiced everywhere, they practiced with other equipment and may folks escaped poverty with boxing. So I am not sure, your right amigo.

    It is so unfair to compare boxers from back then to today's fighters. Leave those guys in their own era. There's no way Benny Leonard stands a chance against Duran. People are too caught up in history and nostalgia. Even Jack Johnson fought like a bar room brawler! Yet, they talk about how great he is today. He was great for his era, which was still the infancy of modern boxing. It's like saying the Continental Army is as good as today's. It's just not true.

    By the way, if you enjoy a good book, I suggest you read," Charley Burley: The Life and Hard Times of an Uncrowned Champion." by Allen Rosenfeld, if you haven't read it. It's a great study, a good read, and very insightful toward many other fighters of the era.

    That's why it's called a "dream bout", and I was referring to a P4P match-up. That means if both fighters could be the same size and possess their same skills and attributes, what would happen if they fought? Boxing fans have imagined such scenarios since the days of John L. Sullivan and Jack Britton. Why you mad bro?

  • @marcxopoco
    @marcxopoco 11 років тому

    Burley was a middleweight who could fight lightheavyweights. Leonard was a lightweight. There are weight classes in boxing, halfwit.

    People don't understand how truely great Leonard was. They think they do, but they don't. He was fucking scary. He made grown men weep. They just wanted out of the ring with him. He would cook their brains and feed it to them like Hannibal Lecter. He frazzled nerves. Leonard was a sick,sick bastard. Kind of the same realm as Bobby Fischer in Chess. Great dream bout would be Leonard vs Burley.

    you must be on crack. jack johnson was perhaps the greatest defensive fighter of all time. you must have a ton of technical brilliance to be able to go 45 rounds with 5 ounce horse hair gloves, no mouth guard or foul protector and a ref who didn't particularly care for your safety. And come out looking like the way he looked at the end of his career@Framblott

    A bum,? ok maybe you got reason if you refer this version of pacquiao (2010-20..) but if you refer the whole carer of the Pacman you are terrify in a mistake, is not the guilt of Pacquiao that his career now is in decay for the fault of a promoter, for the other time see the thing in diferent view,

  • @Framblott

    "hands at his side." Lot of boxers do that to show off. But its not hard. Try it. Johnson like a lot of heavyweights of the teens did not have a lot of technique.

    does benny leonard remind anyone else of manny pacquiao. the right handed pacquiao. hes fast on his feet. a great puncher. plus hes a thinker something pacquiao isnt. leonard would beat pacquiao no doubt. btw someone uploaded the full tendler vs leonard fight. 31 mins long. its been upload for a month and only 136 views. ridiculous.

    There is an other film of Leonard, in his very last fight, which was against Jimmy McLarnin in 1932. This film of the first/second? Lew Tendler fight, and that are the only ones i know of. Could be wrong, but that's all I've managed to find.

    Leonard and Dempsey permanantley altered the game, paving the way for the modern era... they revolutionized it, each in his own unique way... all the brilliant boxers we have seen since... Pep, Harold Johnson, Jofre, Ali, Ezzard Charles, Whitaker, Mayweather, etc. ... the roots are there in the work of Benny Leonard... just as the attacking styles of Frazier, Tyson, Duran, Chavez, etc. ... the roots are with Jack Dempsey... we owe them gratitude and respect for that
