Episode 33: What Does Japan Eat For Breakfast?
Tudorial? Are we learning how to become Tudors?!
Piece work is when you are payed by finished piece of whatever it is you make. You seem to associate it with a 'piece' of time, such as day jobs. I am fairly confident that the pieces are finished pieces or items of whatever your specific guild or craft makes, i.e. pottery, clothing items, tapestries, etc.
This was brilliant! I’m sorry I’ve only found your channel now. I hope you make more videos about your knitting history knowledge. The Master Knitter programme sounds fascinating but well beyond me. I’m shocked you don’t have more views but that’s the algorithm. 😅
What a pleasure to watch you. I’m a knitter and a crocheter. You feel like a wonderful person. Thank you!
Great. Podcast
Such a beautiful home! Love the cats!🐱🐱
Thank you! A very helpful tutorial!
I love the brutalist architecture! Okinawa is a very special place!
Thank you so much for this amazing video… I moved to Okinawa in two months and out of all the houses I’ve seen on that island this one is my favorite and it’s so spacious. Can you please connect me with a realtor for this particular one I love this space.
thank you so much for this-i had the free stitch fiddle and had no clue how to use it. now I think I will be downloading again.
Hi!! I'm traveling to Japan and this is a huge help! I am just wondering if you happen to know where can I buy crochet hooks in Tokyo? Thank you so much!
Nice video, thanks for posting it
I love learning about the history of knitting and the many knitting techniques. You have produced an inspiring video and your work is amazing! Thank you!
Loved listening to you. What a lovely lady and very helpful ❤
Thanks for your videos. Someone may already have told you, but the Marius patterna was designed in the 50s by a Norwegian woman called Unn Soiland. But you got the connection to Marius Eriksen right. Unn Soiland was a fascinating woman, constantly knitting, even when driving her car, the legend goes.
Thanks for the info! I try to be careful and research everything I talk about and I'm always scared I will get something wrong. I look forward to learning more about Unn Soiland.
Well, I see my comment from last New years is right here. Been a year! We miss you and would love for you to come back. Hope all is well.
I hope so too! My life took a bigger swing then I thought since arriving to Germany, I'm not sure if I will be making more videos in the future.
What yarn do you use
I've been using KnitPicks Palette because it comes in a lot of different colors and is pretty afordable. For this project I bought a large pack of minis.
I am Currently doing the master knitter program. I am left handed however i knit right handed anyway so it was easy to follow the patter. i appreciate you knitted left and changed the pattern so it looks right knitted.
I'm glad you found this helpful. I didn't have too many problems with being left handed until the last level of the master knitter program. I think I had a different evaluator for that level and they asked me to create long tail cast ons that lean the correct direction, none of the prior 2 levels noticed that.
Love your tutorial. Does it work for crochet? I want bugs bunny on a duster back.
I don't crochet much but I think it would work, you will have to consider the size of the crochet stitch, some stitches are more like a tall rectangle then a square so you might see some strange elongation of your image. Try it and see.
I'm a hand-dyer in Okinawa (I'm a local) and I never knew that a yarn shop exist here!! So glad I stumbled upon your video.
I'm glad it helped, I lived in Okinawa for 7 years and couldn't believe I'd missed the Ami shop for as long as I had. Where can people by your yarn?
Im going to tokyo next week! But apparently keito is temporary closed now. But i definitely going to all the yarn store you went!
Can you comment on the sweaters in The Five Year Engagement?
This is so amazing!
Just checking in to see if you are feeling better and more settled in. I am super glad that you are finding all the fun things (like yarn!) Despite having to sleep when the sun is up. On your Switzerland trip thoughts... Does Germany have any native sheep? Do they make fabulous rustic yarn?
I am getting all settled in. I'm ashamed to say I haven't made any videos in a while... it's time to start again! I'm still exploring the German sheep but I did just get back from a trip to the Shetland Islands so of course I have lots of sheepy goodness from that trip to share.
Hi nice to meet you . I am also a nurse in bc Canada. Love meeting other nurse knitters. Love the channel
How do you like living in BC? My husband and I are going to be moving back to the states in two years and are thinking about retiring to that part of the world. I was thinking Alaska or Washington state but I think BC would be lovely. I wonder if Canada would take me?
This is such a fun video! I'm going to Tokyo this summer so have been on the lookout for yarn shops where I can buy local yarn. Your video made me so much more excited for it 😊
Excellent thank you
I got offer as a GS 12 step 1 ($74500) + housing allowance, I wondered with that amount of salary will I be able to live comfortably with the family of 4? Thank you in advance. I’m still thinking about this offer. I don’t know if it’s worth the move. Any advices would mean a lot to me. Thank you.
I'm sorry I'm so late getting to this. I'm not in the GS system but I think you will be comfortable in Okinawa for that price. The housing in Okinawa is over priced, the house you see in my video is thanks to both my husband and I having a housing allowance and the cost of electricity is very high. So keep that in mind when you are house hunting, just because you can afford a bigger house maybe you don't want one because the cost of cooling it will be so expensive. We kept only the air conditioner in the living room and the main bedroom on and our electric was never under $300. But once you get past the housing, the food and groceries are pretty affordable. I like going to the farmers markets and the fish markets when I can. The commissary on Camp Foster is the best option for on base shopping and meats but the produce is expensive. Another tip for housing, if you don't mind a Japanese style house go to one of the agencies that doesn't work with a lot of Americans and you will find much lower cost houses. But a Japanese style house may not come with a an oven, just a range and a tiny fish over. Tatami mats are pretty but they can be expensive to replace, don't let your kids or pets tear them up.
It’s ugly becuz of the cement walls. It looks unfinished by American standards. Thank you for the tour. Very interesting to see the difference in other cultures.
The cement walls are interesting. Most of the houses I viewed while house hunting had this thin old fashioned style wall paper but there has been a trend of houses looking like this one being built. Almost everything here is cement because of the frequent typhoons.
The V&A one is a mix of intarsia and stranded, lots of knots and floats. Their website now has images of the back. 🥰
Oh, now I have to go look that up. Actually now that's I've moved, maybe I can go see it in person.
I love this place.
I wanted to say Merry Christmas! Hope to see you soon in the new year.
Happy holidays!
aww I love Kiko's podcast, her intro is the best. The Chimera mittens look like something my husband would really appreciate so i'm going to add those to my 2023 goals. Happy Holidays.
Thanks for those Chimera mittens .... exactly what I needed. They 've found their way into my favourites on Ravelry straight away....Wish you a happy (German and knitty) Xmas.
Glad you like them! They've been in my favorites forever. Sometimes I find myself surfing through ravelry looking for something to knit and I forget I have literally hundreds of favorited patterns waiting for me to knit them.
So glad to see you back!!
Sound and lighting is just fine! Both of your sweaters are beautiful. I am amazed at how much you have seen already since moving. And getting your hands on the local yarn is going to be fun watching make all the things with it. What a beautiful spot in Germany to live. So happy you are back!
I always do a lot (too much) when I first arrive to a new location. I can still pretend I'm on vacation for a little while. But eventually I settle in to work and life and realize I can't actually afford to travel every weekend!
I've been keeping an eye out for your podcasts and some how You Tube dropped me off your channel. I just found it again. Thank goodness! I've missed you! I am so looking forward to your time in Germany. Your back yard looks fantastic! Your sweater is lovely. Welcome back!
I took a pretty long break with my move. But I'm glad to be back too! I'm hoping to get my videos more planned and organized in the coming episodes once all the moving chaos settles down.
I have had that Divide pattern in my favorites for several years. I was intimidated by all the cables, maybe I will give it a try next year.
The cables are thankfully very intuitive and I always love a 1x1 cable because I don't need to dig out a cable needle.
Missed you! Sheep? Ruins? I love a good ruin, but sheep be the bomb! We did a road trip through England and Scotland this past summer and while hanging out at Hadrian's Wall I took soooo many photos of sheep. Best of both worlds!
Glad to be back! I'm hoping to get back to my more educational style knitting/history soon.
Big grin here for your fun stories this time. Adore sheep as well and glad that my hubby is too "infected" to love sheep.
So happy that you reached and enjoy your new surrounging, Deanna!
Thank you so much!
Ahhh somehow I missed this video when it came out! What a gorgeous backyard you have and what a lovely setting for a neighbourhood knitting get-together 😍 Your rainbow pullover is so cute! Loved seeing the pictures of your sweet little town at the end 🤗💕
So lovely to see you again Deanna 😊 Glad to hear you're settling in to your new home and taking advantage of all the wonderful travel opportunities. Your finished cardigan is beautiful and your new sweater looks lovely so far as well. I very much appreciated seeing some of the sights from your travels, even in the fog Gruyere looks magical. Thanks for introducing us to your new "neigh-bours" 🤣 Happy Making 🤗💕
Thank you so much! I'm so excited to be back. I'm itching to start exploring the knitting history in my new home. Did you see the tapestries in the castle? They were so beautifully woven I can't help but want to get better at weaving and make beautiful things for my home.
Europe is an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing and enjoy! 🧶🧶🧶
It really is! I'm having so much fun exploring.
It is nice to see you and your cats made the move safely to Germany from Japan, but without your furniture it must be rather uncomfortable. You are a fantastic knitter and are very fortunate to live where you are now, I am slightly envious. Your travel episodes are fun and interesting to watch, now that you are in Europe we will expect more travelling and yarn shop episodes from you, so we can travel through you! Peace from Canada.
I'm glad you like the travel episodes. I worry that it feels like I'm just showing off my vacation photos. I'm going to try to get more on topic travel locations that center around knitting once I get more settled here.
Oooh wow! Just found you on UA-cam and I’m excited to watch your show 😃👏🏼ty for taking the time to make a show for us…. I live in Connecticut and love knitting 🧶
Awesome! Thank you! Both of my parents grew up in Connecticut but I've only been there once (for Switches West!).
It’s good to see you again! Glad you are enjoying Germany.
Thanks! 😃 It's good to be back.
Lovely to see you back! I'm looking forward to you settling in Germany
Thank you so much! Since we don't have any furniture yet we're spending as much time out of the house as possible. We're headed to the Orval Abby this weekend and to Bastogne.
A very warm welcome to Germany - I hope our country is treating you well!
So far I'm enjoying it a lot here...it may sound funny but the thing I'm struggling with most is driving! Going from the left side of the road in Okinawa, and new street signs, and different merging rules... plus the round-abouts! Several times I thought I knew where I was but turned off a round-about in the wrong place and ended up lost.
@@haxtonknits that doesn't sound funny at all!
Good to see you back and welcome to Germany, Deanna! May the settling in go well, enjoy the new surrounding and SWEATER WEATHER. Actually i hope that some warmer days come again for a golden october, it is too cold for the season, but hey...lets see.
Thank you! 😊 My neighbors said it went straight from summer to "November weather" with the rain. I am really excited to see the trees turning yellow and gold. Living in Okinawa I really miss that autumn colors.
