    I did some tests and it was detected that I have some problems with these types of interference. One question: is there any system or way to deal with this, besides the obvious one of making checklists or having an alarm clock for things we might forget?

    What is its purpose? I am shocked at hard it is. I have always not that I suck at canceling something when I plan to say something and quickly change my mind. But, I say it any way. But, what does that odd inability to cancel a move mean? Why test this? (I got surprised with an assignment to do this task for a weight loss study.)

      @Brainpsychlopedia.official Місяць тому

      Hi! The purpose of the Stop Signal Task (SST) is to measure the response time of the brain to inhibit prepotent actions. For instance, if we already initiate an action and are suddenly presented with a stop signal, can we stop the behavior? Each one of us will vary in how long we take to stop the action and/or if we are able to stop the action in the first place. Thus, it's normal to find SST challenging as it involves overriding automatic responses. This difficulty reflects natural variability in cognitive control abilities among individuals. So, it is a classic experimental task used for decades in psychology research to measure response inhibition (or impulse control). Being able to stop or inhibit an action is important in many cases. For example, being able to inhibit the desire to consume an addictive substance or sticking to a strict diet plan or inhibiting excessive use of electronic devices are all situations where one might need to exercise their inhibitory control. But we observe that sometimes people are unable to do so. Thus, to investigate such situations, researchers use tasks like the Stop Signal Task to understand this. Hope this helps!

    Good introduction. But I've a question. Isn't money is a secondary reinforcer? It's value is learned and it shares the property of secondary reinforcers that it is less susceptible to satiation.

    • @Brainpsychlopedia.official
      @Brainpsychlopedia.official 5 місяців тому

      Hello! Thank you for your comment and question! Very well pointed. Primary reinforcers are stimuli that inherently satisfy basic biological needs or drives. Money, while not a biological necessity in itself, is often directly associated with obtaining these primary reinforcers, due to which it sometimes acts as a primary reinforcer. In some lab studies, they found evidence that money lead to successful behavioural learning of contingencies and elicited activation in similar neural structures as primary reinforcers (Breiter and Rosen, 1999). If you are further interested in this topic perhaps this paper could be interesting for you: Delgado, M. R., Labouliere, C. D., & Phelps, E. A. (2006). Fear of losing money? Aversive conditioning with secondary reinforcers. Social cognitive and affective neuroscience, 1(3), 250-259. We will talk about this topic/paper in a future video! Again very well pointed! Thanks!

    I difficult to understand variable interval

    • @Brainpsychlopedia.official
      @Brainpsychlopedia.official 5 місяців тому

      Hi! So in the variable interval reinforcement schedule the reinforcement is delivered at unpredictable time intervals (e.g., after 5, 7, 10, and 20 minutes). Here is a really good example from the Lumen Introduction to Psychology website (link: courses.lumenlearning.com/waymaker-psychology/chapter/reading-reinforcement-schedules/) -- " Say that Manuel is the manager at a fast-food restaurant. Every once in a while someone from the quality control division comes to Manuel’s restaurant. If the restaurant is clean and the service is fast, everyone on that shift earns a $20 bonus. Manuel never knows when the quality control person will show up, so he always tries to keep the restaurant clean and ensures that his employees provide prompt and courteous service. His productivity regarding prompt service and keeping a clean restaurant are steady because he wants his crew to earn the bonus." The same is true for social media notifications, they are delivered at variable intervals! Hope this was helpful.
