Prong collars can cause serious physical injuries (like throat and nerve damage) and psychological harm, leading to fear, anxiety, and aggression in dogs. They’re also counterproductive to effective training, as they rely on pain rather than teaching desired behavior. Safer and more humane alternatives exist, making prong collars unnecessary and increasingly viewed as inhumane by experts and animal welfare organizations.

@@silverfox9267 I would need some evidence to support your statements. As I have not come across anything in science or anecdotedly that agrees with you, I will have to disagree. Briefly - because this is not the place to be having such an in-depth conversation - prong collars can in fact be used to teach desired behaviours through negative reinforcement, as well as opening the doors to good behaviour through the suppression of unwanted ones. Your statement that they can cause physical and psychological harm is very much irrelevant, as I can say the same thing about a piece of rope; or a harness; or positive reinforcement. And finally, if there were "safer and more humane alternatives", as a loving, responsible and educated owner and trainer, do you not think I would be using them?

@@AdventureswithLycanmyGSD thank you! They have their difficulties for sure but in my opinion German Shepherds are one of the best dog breeds in the world. It's cool that you do protection with Lycan, I've always wanted to do it with Mischa but you have to live near a club and the nearest to me is 4.5hrs drive (and not accepting new members)

Ha don't know if I've ever tried smelling for it. Usually my Mischa will start folding one ear back, scratching at it excessively, and shaking her head a lot. When it's bad it develops this black waxy substance inside the ear. It's best not to have it get that bad however because sometimes with all the muck it blocks the ear canal and cleaning fluid doesn't reach the infection. Then I'd highly recommend going to a vet. But it's just a bacterial infection usually caused by prolonged moisture in the ear. I don't know if there's a higher chance of infection in different bodies of water - - I guess that makes sense, but I'm not a vet.

Some dogs find it harder than others. Mischa has no fear and goes crazy for a ball so she caught on pretty quickly. You should try it anyway! I'm often surprised what our dogs can do. There's no harm in playing around with it as long as you're both having fun.

In my opinion training of all levels only increases the bond between human and dog, as long as the dog's emotions are prioritised. For Mischa agility has given her purpose; she flippin loves it. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Yep my girls both go crazy for the garden hose. That is super super interesting about Lycan's ears and raw food versus kibble. I feed the highest quality kibble I can afford plus as much raw as I can, but like you, for me it depends how much is in the bank. I would prefer to feed all raw but have to compromise if I want to eat as well. I wonder if switching to all raw would fix Mischa's ear problems altogether...?

That's awesome!! The main reason we do any dog sport is because it makes the dog joyous! Competing against other humans is just a perk. Keep doing what you're doing with your dog, not many people give their dogs a purpose in life like that. Even if it is just weaving between goalposts, I bet he loves it!
