An 'Ultra Stealth' Blob! The Pulling Griff
This is the fifth in the series and this time it is a a bit of a strange one! It is tied large size 10, fairly heavyweight hook and is most effective when just pulled under the surface and not as a traditional dry but more of a Blob technique!
My uncle and I were fishing many years ago and he had one of these on - he has always liked a Griffith Gnat tied large for Lakes - and his ‘Gnat’ sunk so he stripped it back quickly to re-Gink it and caught a lovely rainbow. We both tried fishing it this way and had lots of difficult fish to the net in no time!It does, however, also work as a conventional dry fly, especially at Hawthorn Fly time, and I have used it down to size 22 with great success in both still waters and rivers. It is, of course, not my pattern but is most commonly attributed to US angler George Griffith.
Again, it is a simple fly - with just a few materials and the hook! - to tie but works so well on all sizes of still waters.
It is an ideal fly for a beginner to tie and is especially effective on reservoirs and pools, small or large.
****Please tie a few and let me know how you get on in the Comments below. If there are any flies you would like me to tie and show on this channel, please also use the Comments section. *****

The Double Figure Specialist! The Damsel Tadpole
Переглядів 18321 годину тому
This is the fourth in the series and this time it is a fly 'stolen' from a small water angler I fished alongside for many years. I usually like to play about with patterns but with this one, I tried it when I was struggling one day and caught over 20 rainbows on it so it was never altered! Again, it is a simple fly - with just 4 materials and the hook! - to tie but works so well on all sizes of...
A simple fly that rarely fails! The Shipman's Buzzer (Variant)
Переглядів 19914 днів тому
This is the third in the series and this time it is my take on a modern classic. As soon as new patterns are revealed, I like to play about with them and tweak them for my own purpose. With this one, I replaced the white Antron breathers with closed cell foam and it caught over 20 fish the first time out! I think this is now widely known as the Sugar Cube buzzer and probably developed by others...
A simple fly that rarely fails on all waters! The Skinny Damsel
Переглядів 29421 день тому
This is the second in the series and this time it is my take on the ever popular Damsel 'Nymph'. Many of these so called 'nymphs' are more closer to lures in their make up but this one combines a generic profile with fish-catching movement. Over the next few weeks, there will be several flies that all use easily available materials and I will include tips and tricks I have used over many years ...
A simple fly that rarely fails on all waters! The Harepole Nymph is a proven fish catcher!

While this is not my usual type of art video, it is one of my passions and I regular use it as a hobby and find it a great way to relax. In the coming weeks, I will be making videos of flies that I have either devised myself or 'borrowed' from others and all of these are aimed at the beginner fly tier or those with limited time (or patience!). They will use easily available materials and I will...

Welcome to my UA-cam channel! This simple exercise shows how you use masking fluid to create highlights the easy way! Well spotted, pretty sure it was the 'Sparton' brand! He was a great bloke, bought quite a bit from him on eBay and he'd always put something extra in and a hand written note. Real shame he's no longer with us, bless him.

How best to fish it please?

    • @CarlWaineArt
      @CarlWaineArt 24 дні тому

Hi Trevor, many thanks for your comment. I usually fish this as the point fly on a floating line with a 15 to 20 foot leader and have either fish it alone or with one or two unweighted flies above it on droppers. I also fish it as a single fly on an intermediate line. I find I get the majority of my takes 'on-the-drop', allowing it to drop through the water column and watching the line carefully for any movement. If there are no takes as it sinks, I usually make short pulls or a slow figure of eight retrieve. I will have a damsel fly dressing in a couple of days that is also a great catching fly. I hope this helps and please let me know how you get on. Tight lines, Carl

Hi, thanks for your comment. I use Arches Hot Pressed paper (300gsm) and Pebeo Drawing Gum. The latter is latex free so you don't get the smell or problems with allergies etc. Hope this helps!

Many thanks. I have tried both ways of doing it for many years but I now follow this method for most of my finished artwork. I will have to do a video showing the comparisons though so thanks for the suggestion.
