Turn Your Photo Into a Painting Easily with the TK Gen Fill Panel
Hi, Kate. Thank you for this video. It has been a long time since I used Nik. That was in the days when Nik was still for nothing. And now there have been quite a few changes in the program. So I am very happy with your help so that I can use this fantastic program in the right way again. Kind regards from the Netherlands, Antoine.
You are so welcome! Thanks for taking the time to say Hi from the Netherlands! ☺️
This was great Kate. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! 😊
This is great! Would love to see more of these. When you complete the photo can you have it primed on canvas? Would be cool as a piece of hanging art. Thanks again!
Yes, printing on canvas would look really great I think. I haven't done it myself but there's no reason why the texture would not be improved with a real canvas print. Anytime I try something new like that, I'll have a very small one (less expensive) printed first to see if I like the effect. If it's a winner, then I'll print it large. I will try to upload more digital effects tutorials like this. I do have a Creative Photography Playlist which has several videos similar to this one. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/play/PLGC7koSrlhwgCxyT4trpsL-nyG0o5E-h5.html&si=1KxlymKEHCazVS6X Thanks again for the support of my channel. I enjoy sharing photo ideas.
@@KateSilviaPhotography thanks Kate! I think the small canvas is a great place to start. I wonder if I painted the canvas with gel medium after it’s printed would also give the appearance of a real painting? I’m going to give it a try! Thanks again, super helpful video!
I think that’s a great idea. Something else I’ve used to increase the paint effect is an app on my iPad called iColorama. When you load the image in there, go to the Effects list and then select Raise…it gives all the edges a raised or 3D look. It’s pretty nifty! ☺️
Thanks so much, picked up some useful workflows from you.😊
Thanks for taking the time to let me know you found it helpful! Have an awesome day! ☺️
Excellent teacher! Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you! 😊
Thank you Madam! Why would you first develop in color instead of bringing your RAW file directly to Efex and develop directly in BW?
Good question! You could just as easily bring your files directly into NIK and do all of your adjustments. But RAW files in particular need some basic raw adjustments like sharpening and contrast added to them. While I can do that in NIK, it’s just my usual workflow to process a color image until I’m happy with it. Then, if I feel like creating a black and white, I’ll then bring it into NIK. I always recommend that people choose the workflow and software that works for them, not necessarily following every step that someone else does. That leads to knowing the software better, which leads to better final results. Glad you enjoyed the video! ☺️
Your Nik videos are so inspiring and wonderful!
Glad you like them! ☺️
Merci Kate ! I start using Nik Collection and discovering the capabilities with your video ;)
You're so welcome! Nik is an amazing software suite and Color Efex is one of my most used programs outside of Adobe. 😊 Have fun!
Nice work, Kate! I'm a long-time user of DXO Photolab, but am just now starting to play with Color Efex. Super helpful!
Thanks for commenting Greg! I'm so glad you found the video helpful. Have fun with Color Efex...it's such a creative outlet.
Nice presentation and thanks for the tips! I've been using Nik (mostly SEP) at least as far back as v3, but I learned a few things that I somehow overlooked (like Last Edits, although alt-Z/alt-Y can be useful, and I didn't know you could adjust tonality by Zone, although the Luminosity Mask covers that). I've also been too precise with polygonal masking! As a long-time film shooter (including a lot of Tri-X), I really appreciate the excellent emulations (I also have FilmPack but rarely use it). I also generally pick an emulsion first, and then apply global and local adjustments. One of the advantages of digital (Silver Efex, anyway) is that you're not stuck with, say, a Wratten 15 or 16--you can split the difference and back off a bit (and of course apply it ex post facto and try multiple different treatments--nice not to be stuck with one negative). So cool! It's just crazy how much you can do with this program. BtW, workflow-wise, a lot of us don't use Macs and we also don't use Adobe (especially since they changed to "rental" mode). I prefer PhotoLab for RAW processing (including DxO's superior NR, basic tonality/HSL adjustments, possible cropping/geometry corrections, blemishes, etc.) and export from there to Nik. From Nik, I save as a TIFF and print from that.
I really appreciate the comments ddsdds! 😊. The workflow outside of NIK is definitely varied from person to person. I’m glad you have one that works well for you. ☺️
Been a long time Nik user, since before Goggle had it, and have seen lots of tutorials, Kate Silvia has to be one of the best presenters on Nik software that I've run across!
Wow, thank you!😊
an amazing video thanks so much.
So glad you found it helpful. Thanks 😊
Thanks Kate - very thorough! When I watched your zone system review, it made me wonder why Adobe doesn’t offer this simple answer to luminosity masking in programs like Lightroom. So quick and easy - yet powerful.
Thank you. That is a wonderful idea. Adobe is really missing out on a traditional darkroom method that a ton of people would like to have in LR. I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial. 😊
This was the best explanation I’ve found. I’m going to bookmark her for whatever else she explains bc I know I’ll have more questions and now I know where to look for a direct answer.
Thank you so much! 😊
This doesnt make sense.... How come the brightness does not change when I change the aperture? Is there a pro mode where I can control these settings?
It’s not an actual aperture change which is why I use the word “sorta” in the title. The mode I demo is a tool that “mimics” a change in depth of field…not a change in the exposure. It doesn’t function like a traditional lens aperture. Sorry if it was confusing. 😊
@@KateSilviaPhotography Thanks. Is there a mode that is pro where I can change aperture and shutter speed where I make a change and I can see the change is the image in real time?
@Blackfilmguild You can change the overall exposure in real time by tapping the screen in the camera app to access the yellow box that pops up. Drag your finger up or down to change the exposure. I prefer to see actual numbers associated with my shutter speeds and I use third party apps for that. ReeExpose is a great one, along with Camera+ and Moment. They all allow more manual control of the exposures and will allow for long exposures as well. Slow Shutter has been a simple one that I’ve used for years for long exposure photography with the phone. Using Portrait mode will show you a blurred background in real time. Another option…after the photo is taken…is the Blur tool in the Lightroom App. I’ve used it several times to de-emphasize a background. 😊
Hi Kate...this is the very BEST tutorial for Nik I have ever seen.Thank you very much, Rick
You just made my day…thank you soooo much for your kind words. Glad you found it helpful. 😊
Does LR have a histogram during edits i cannot for the life of me find it????
Yes, in Lightroom (not classic) if you’re in the edit module, there is access to the histogram via the three dots at the bottom of the adjustment list on the far right of the interface. Or just hit the shortcut Command ( CTR on a PC) Zero. Let me know if that helps. Have a great day! ☺️
Bravo..
Thank you 😊
First class.. Being a bit jaded by Adobe I am drifting my way back to the Nik suite and I have certainly learned/relearned some ways to use their products from you, Thank you for that. One thing I may have missed is how to collapse the stack under the control point..? Excellent work carry on. You can open a 'Buy me a coffee' link for support
Ah yes…that stack under the control point can get a little annoying. They changed it in the last update. It’s to the right of the control point choices…When you hover your cursor over it, it says Hide Local Adjustment parameters in the preview. The shortcut is Shift-E. 😊. I knew I’d forget to mention something. 🤣🤣
Good idea on the Buy me a coffee…thanks for the suggestion. I like to teach but suck at marketing!🤣
And...the Buy me a Coffee Link is now in my About section. Thanks so much for the suggestion. :)
Excellent work, thank you. L&S
Thank you so much! So glad you’re finding the videos helpful! I enjoy teaching😊.
Thanks Kate
Any time! Glad you found it helpful. 😊
Like what you do Kate, you have a new subscriber about a week ago. Having just got hold of the Nik7 collection you're providing me with a wealth of information.
Thanks for subbing! I’m so glad you’re finding this information helpful. 😊
That was an awesome explanation. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!😊
Nice! I wish this was stand-alone software…
Actually, you Can! Just right click on any image on your computer (RGB image only) and select the NIK program you want. Also, you can open the program and go to the file menu and open your image from there. ☺️
@@KateSilviaPhotography thank you!
Great tutorial ! Merci Kate ;)
So glad you found it helpful! Thanks for commenting. ☺️
Thanks for this tutorial: really useful and well presented. The suggestion of starting with a chosen film type and working from there is brilliant. The way these are laid out on the menu make them seem like an afterthought, but perhaps many using these programs have never shot film…
Than you so much for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed this tutorial. I started that workflow because I was a film shooter, and just felt like it was a natural transition in software to do the same thing. Have an awesome day! 😊
Excellent tutorial. As it's necessary to turn the mask on/off so frequently, is there a keyboard shortcut for that?
Shortcuts would be nice for masks but I don’t think they are part of the program yet. You can duplicate a Control Point with CMD/CTR D and invert it with cmd/ctr I. Anything that already has a shortcut key will be displayed when you hover over it. But nothing is assigned to turning the mask on and off. Definitely something that would be nice in the next update. ☺️
Great overview about the latest iteration of NIK. I appreciate your comments about upgrading from 5 or 6. Quick question: I see from your panel that you have the various TK panels from Tony Kuyper installed. Have you or do you plan to do videos about how you use those various panels? For me personally, I've standardized my workflow around these panels. Thanks in advance.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I do like Tony’s panels. I’ve been learning to use them myself and do plan on putting some tutorials together soon. There’s so much to cover with those panels, it’s hard to know where to begin. 🤣🤣. I do have one video from a couple months ago where I demo his Gen fill panel to achieve painterly looks. That’s fun to experiment with for creativity.
I don't use LR/PS (IMO, DxO PhotoLab's much better), but it's ironic that you have to export from PL to Nik--the plug-ins should be integrated! Does Switch To work in PL or only PS? Also, for the many of us who are PC rather than Mac users, do we use Alt instead of Option?
I’ve noticed that some plugins only work with Adobe products while others will work with Apple Photos, like Skylum Luminar. That’s up to the companies. The Switch To option should work in the stand alone version of the NIK suite as well as the plugins. And yes, I apologize for not mentioning the PC equivalent of Opt which is Alt like you said. ☺️. I need to be more cognizant of that during demos like this. Have an awesome day!
A tutorial that is not overly verbose, but provides a comprehensive and ordered look at a software product, feature, or process is worth the time spent. This one ticks those boxes. Despite being a longtime user of the Nik suite, I was quickly engaged and even learned a couple things about the software that I didn't know. Thank you. This was an excellent tutorial!
I truly appreciate your comments Chris. After a “you should learn the program before making a video” comment the other day, (which I know I should ignore) this one made my day! I’m so glad you found some new aspects of Silver Efex. I’ve used it for 15 years…Love it! Have an awesome day! 😊
Thanks Kate, that tutorial was so entertaining and fun to watch . To create a B&W in this Nik 7 is faster and more precision in the area you want , less masking than LrC . Cheers
I’m so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Nik is a fantastic software package. Have an awesome day! 😊
You must first learn how to use the Plugin and then make the video, you have omitted important aspects of the program.
Aspects such as?? Everybody else seems to really like this overview of Silver Efex. I guess ya can’t make everyone happy. Peace.
Kate, I use Silver Efex version 4.3, strictly for the presets. Does the latest version add any presets? I find that it is easier to do my other edits in LRC and PS, so if DXO hasn’t added presets to version 7 I don’t need it. Thanks.
HI. I'm not sure how many presets there were before, but there are 64 now and organized a little differently. If that's not a big enough difference, then yes, you don't need the upgrade right now. Hope this helps. Have an awesome day. Kate
This is the video I’ve been looking for😮💨🧡. I’ve been in the fence ever since. Thanks anyways for this amazing video thumbs up💯
I’m so glad you found it helpful! ☺️
Really thanks for your explanation of silver efex 7. I have one question to yoy.. I use Silver Efex for 95% and 5% color efex. I have the 6 version and I doubt or it is usefull to upgrade. In the 6 version was an update that increase the speed between LR and NIK. Do you have an advice>> thxs bart
Hi Bart, Thanks for commenting on the video. There were some significant changes to Nik with regard to the control points and the addition of a polygonal tool for CP's. Whether or not you'd need something like this depends on the types of adjustments you make within the program. I showed it briefly in the video. If the new ability to switch from Nik program to Nik program, along with the new polygonal tools aren't something you'd use...you may want to wait until the next version. There's a big difference from Nik 5 to Nik 7...but not as much from 6 to 7. Nik 6 should work great for a while. :)
This is the best Silver Efex tutorial that I have come across. Thanks, I learned a lot!
Wow, thanks!😊
Excellent video … thanks. I’m early days when it comes to photo editing. Currently shooting mostly B&W landscapes with a Fuji X100V and editing the JPEG’s and occasional raw .RAF’s with Apple Photos on my 2014 Intel iMac. If I purchase and install Silver Efex stand alone suit on my iMac, do you think I can then edit with Silver Efex within Photos as an extension? Monochrome is my main interest and it seems that Silver Efex is an excellent tool for editing these images.
Thank you so much. Apple Photos stores their images as a package that cannot be accessed from other programs…like plugins such as Nik. However Nik can be used as a stand alone program and you can open images directly into Silver Efex. You’d just have to export the image you want to use from Apple Photos…to a folder you keep somewhere on your system, and then open the image from there into Nik. I’d make sure your operating system can handle the software first. Have fun with your black and white photography. It’s amazing.
@@KateSilviaPhotography OK … thanks! 📷😄
Very helpful, Kate. Thanks!
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment let me know it was helpful. Have a great day! ☺️
Thanks Kate for sharing this information, very informative,
You are so welcome!
I am so excited to see you doing some tutorials on the new Nik!! It is such a great program and I want to learn all the new ways to use it!!!
Thank you. It’s wonderful software.
Hello Kate, Jose from Puerto Rico. I enjoyed this video so much that I subscribed to your channel. I was on the fence with the Nik Collection since I got version 6 last year, but this video helped me pull the trigger. I like your teaching approach: it goes straight to the point and with demonstrations; in your case, it's a gift. Glad I found this channel.
You just made my day! Thank you for taking the time to let me know how much you enjoyed the video. I do so love to teach. ☺️. I hope you find the info you need here.
WOW. have never had this package described so thoroughly. Will definitely have to be adding it to my workflow. Thanks fora great presentation
You're so welcome! I’ve been using this software for nearly 15 years. Just keeps getting better!
Very useful tutorial of a great plug-in. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!☺️
Renaming myth about Lr. I just tested renaming using LrC vs. Lr. 12 new photos sitting on my Mac desktop names by the iPhone camera. I counted 8 steps (not counting minor steps within dialogue boxes) to rename within LrC - starting with 'Import'. No 'Import' using Lr. Click 'Local' and select a folder. Right-click ANY one photo to Show In Finder and the entire group appear within Finder. (they are all pre-selected). Use the OS (Finder) rename feature - close Finder. Select All (if desired) then "Copy X Photo(s) to Cloud. New named photos are now on my local drive AND in the Cloud.
Ok.
Use Lr....OR LrC...and keep Photos for your finished images. Photos have gained functionality, but not even equal to Aperture from way back when. Lr/LrC is great, but storage costs gets a bit outrageous if you want to use their higher tiered cloud storage (as well)
Their 1TB is twice the price of a 20GB account. You’re so right. Ridiculous…
Awesome tutoria! Apple definitely makes it harder than it needs to be. For long-term management, consider Lightroom Classic with a NAS. No monthly cloud fees, no storage limits! Imagine having to redo this if you hit your Adobe storage or switch services. A NAS is a one-time cost that gives you total control. Back up directly from your phone and access photos at full speed without waiting for uploads/downloads at home.
Thanks for the tip Darin! I have not researched NAS but it definitely sounds like a problem solver! I'll look into it. Thanks a bunch! Have an awesome weekend.
Thanks--- you've confirmed exactly what I thought was going on with Photos. I hadn't heard of the utility to get all the photos out of Photos so that was a great piece of information. The other option I've had mixed success with is using an external editor from within Photos.... which feels very clumsy. So a useful video , although a tad repetitive, but I've ranted about this myself :) Thanks for making it!
I appreciate your input Ed. I hadn't used Photos for a long time because of how clunky it is...but after tutoring another student who was knee deep in the Photos app and wanting to do more...I felt that there would be more folks out there just like him. I'm glad you found it helpful. And yes...I sometimes repeat myself...sometimes...LOL! Enjoy your day!
Thanks for the overview. Excited about the new features, especially control point variability! One word of caution: Nik 7 is not compatible with MacOS Monterey (OS 12) and earlier versions of Apple’s OS. Don’t understand why Monterey was sidelined. It’s only been out 4 years!
Thanks. I did not know that about the compatibility issue. I think all software companies are doing things like that to force us to upgrade more often. Annoying…and expensive!
A little bit confusing. Keep it simple stupid for your viewers.
I will try. Thanks.
Great video and your delightful personality shines through, Kate!
Awww….thanks! 😊
