Exworthy Junction
United States
Приєднався 5 кві 2019
Exworthy Junction is an N-scale model railway in the basement of my home in Circle Pines, Minnesota. It started life as a joint project with my son, representing present day North American practice. After my son left home I repossessed the railway and started to convert it to a British prototype from the 1960's by grafting my holiday memories of the West of England lines into it's DNA. This accounts for some anachronisms and US character that sharp-eyed viewers will detect.
These videos will aim to show how such a railway might have operated. They may be appreciated most by people who have similar memories of the railways of Devon and Cornwall before their rationalisation. I ask for your tolerance as I learn how best to create them!

Exworthy Journeys #22 The Possession
Now that I have finished the bracket signals and the uncouplers, and checked out the new track layout at Exworthy, it is high time that I did the ballasting!
Before I do that, I have taken the opportunity to recreate the ballasting operation using my "dogfish" hoppers, and some rudimentary special effects!
The eagle-eyed may notice that the platforms are still missing some of their furniture, removed for safe keeping during the relaying. At least the platform fencing survived!
Some sounds are from my class 22 diesel, off camera, and the rest are from zapsplat.com .
Video processing was using Cyberlink PowerDirector 16.

Secret Signals . . . (or one up the bracket. )

I guess the secrets are the servo motors under the baseboard! One or two more 'secrets' may be revealed as I give some indications as to how I made my first bracket signal.

This video has been a long time coming, as we are now at that time in Minnesota when every homeowner realises that if they do not get out NOW and do all those things that need to be done before winter, they may suddenly get frozen and covered up by snow! But the railway is now back in business after track renewals and upgrades as I show here.

Just a short presentation to explain why I will not be making any more videos for a little while. My next project is to upgrade the station throat seen in this video to Peco Streamline turnouts with switched electrofrogs, to add more electromagnetic uncouplers, and hopefully do something about the egregious lack of signals! There will be more videos after a while!

I have just finished assembling an N Gauge Society kit of the BR mark 1 Horsebox, so here is its video debut. These were constructed to a standard that would allow them to work in all passenger trains, so here the premise is that one needs to be taken to my imaginary terminus at Treverrin Porth to pick up a racehorse and convey it to London. The horse's groom would travel on the same train in t...

Summer Saturdays arre exciting times on my Mid-Cornwall lines, with trains arriving from all over England. This video results from my experimentation with "green screens", so is probably better viewed in a smaller window! My thanks to Stephen R for providing the background photographs of Southwest England. Incidental sounds from Zapsplat.com

This video is especially for viewers who thought that my video about my "Time Warp Drone" ua-cam.com/video/6-eeZKG_WMU/v-deo.html was just an April Fool spoof. But, in essence, my combination of models and video is a way of showing how things used to be on the railways of Western England - almost as good as having a time machine! This video focusses on the little trains that plied the tracks th...

My Graham Farish class 03 shunter is the star of Exworthy Journeys #14. It is not running as it came "out of the box". This video explains what I did to it. Exworthy Quarry has been working below capacity recently, so there are plenty of empty mineral wagons on hand. The next trainload is almost complete - the quarry shunter, a class 03 diesel, only has to get three more wagons loaded before the train engine arrives. I did a lot of work to get the star of the show ready to appear; here I explain all about it - ua-cam.com/video/AL6lH1aZtug/v-deo.htm...
Exworthy Journeys #13 - Uncle Leonard goes to Exworthy

Come back with me to the 1960's on a visit to Exworthy Junction, as it might have been depicted by my Uncle Leonard using his 8mm cine camera. In 2023 I shot this with my Sony Handycam and also an Arebi "spy" camera, A10 plus, which can get into vantage points too constrictive for my Sony camera. Like most spy cameras, the Arebi is not designed to focus on objects closer than about a foot, so f...

This video is for my friend and colleague, Doug, who pointed out that my railway had no telegraph poles and was therefore not conducive to travel by Sherlock Holmes! So I have started to add the poles . . .fortunately at 2mm to the foot, the wires themselves would be too small to be visible! Sound files courtesy of www.Zapsplat.com
Exworthy Journeys # 11 - Working at the Quarry
Переглядів 1662 роки тому
Now my replacement class 22 is ready to work - with my dummy one providing the sound off camera. OK, so maybe this ore is geologically suspect for southwest England, but who knows what kind of ore it is! This dedicated ore train is so long that it needs to be split for loading - and this is done such that when the loaded train is ready to leave the unfitted wagons are at the rear as they should...

I had intended my next video to be about Exworthy Quarry, but my class 22 suffered a motor failure, so I bought a second one [pre-owned]. My old one is now a "dummy" but I was able to fit it with sound with a "sugarcube" speaker in the fuel tank and an ESU "Loksound 5 micro" decoder where the motor used to be. Now when I run double headed I can have sound. The class 52 Western seems to make eno...

Fantastic
Lovely work 😊 Love your TBM by the way; it looks very similar to my miniature lathe! ❤
Nice work !
Excellent modifications and running smooth over the points.
Very nicely done! Wonderful layout. Such a huge upgrade and wonderful reprofiling for a much better operation. My one caveat (as a real life engineer *train driver in UK terms*) is your mainline crossovers always have to correspond! Both either lined for straight or both for the cross! Once again very well done and thank you for sharing your hobby. Cheers from America
Oops, I missed that! No interlocking either. BTW, I am in America [MN]
Nice model . Hi from NZ
Ok, so I had enough trouble with 4 wheel rolling stock in HO! But at least you can put a little bit extra weight in without to much trouble. You're in N guage, how do you do it? 🤔 great layout by the way, very well detailed for N guage, well done 👏👏👏👏😎👍
I'm sure Squeeze will warm to you using that name/title! 😉
I always wondered what Maradona did when he hung up his boots....
The curved point blade looks like it just needs the end of it bending a bit., it looks like the very end of the blade rail has been bent outwards and so it isn’t a smooth curve and it the kink in it will push the wagons off when running towards the points. It just needs the tip of the point blade bending inwards so to guide the wheels better I think.
You are absolutely right - what good eyesight you have! I did not bother to fix it as I knew I was going to relay that pointwork anyway. My main reason for relaying is to improve the slow running with the live frogs and to smooth out the S-curve into the goods shed. . . but I left the derailment in the video just for fun!!
Pardon my asking, but is this the full size railway? It looks like 00 gauge to me, but you could be some ten minute walk from the station.
Likewise thought it was OO. Looks great. 2.5k views and only 70 Subscribers???? Great looking layout 👍👌
Make that 71 subscribers 👍
Thanks for the nice comment . . . and the subscription!
Very nice video to watch. Thank you for sharing.
Such a lovely layout. I did not realise it was N gauge at first! I thought it was 00 as the details are so good.
Same
Thanks, both of you, for the nice comment. Yes, N scale has enabled me to get a much more realistic layout into the space I have available, but I do find that I tend to lose a lot of small parts into the black hole that regularly manifests itself between my workbench and the basement floor!
What is relaying?
I am putting in all new pointwork at this end of the station to smooth out the road into the goods shed, etc and to get better slow running!
Please make videos of the upgrade process!
I will try to make some still pictures and stitch them together!
Why does your 03 sound like an 08?
nice sound effects !
This layout looks like a lot of fun to operate, very enjoyable, keep the videos coming and great work. Cheers, Dave !
Very entertaining and a great layout !
Great way of getting more reliable running out of the mostly excellent Farish 03 making it excellent in the process!
Would it make any difference if some weight is added to the wagons to persuade them not to ride up on each other? I appreciate that this is harder to hide in cattle wagon but could save you relaying?
I add extra weight to mine but mine is 00 gauge.
I was thinking the same. That and back to backs would be my first port of call.
Is your layout on Instagram or twitter? I had a bit of a search but could not find an account of the same name.
A great video and amazing layout. Thank you for sharing.
Lovely layout and operations. Very similar to how I want to run my future quarry module.
Very nice, a lot grander than my modest Quarry Lane.
But I can't put in the sort of detail that you put into yours!
Awesome
I love the shot around 7 minutes because it looks like a partly cloudy day, with stronger sunlight hitting the foreground and perhaps the shade of a cloud over the station building and the hill behind it. (although I suspect that is the effect of the backscene board)
It is nice. (From Ken)
