    So the main difference is that the Aluminium one buzzes more easily with less force right? Does it means that the aluminium ones are more responsive? Which one have less resistance?

I play in a section in a brass band, though I might stand out if I'm the only one with a copper mute (visually I mean) so I'll probably carry on using the classic Harmon there and save the bubble for jazz. @@duncanfraserjazz Oh man it arrived today and it's AMAZING! What a sound! With the plunger in the projection is ridiculous and the sound full fat. Intonation below C is so much better than with the traditional Harmon. Even though you mentioned it in this video, the weight took me by surprise. My Conn has a gubbins (technical term) on the main tuning slide to switch from Bb to A, so it is already somewhat front-heavy. Also the early 22Bs had no pinky ring so all the support has to come from your left hand. Luckily a have developed a very strong left wrist so I think I can cope with it. It just sounds too good not to.

      Hey Clifford - you are quite right that published sheet music for the reveille is in 2/4. Although for both these pieces I definitely don’t think of them in a given time signature. I’m certainly not counting note lengths. When I play them here they are openly interpreted depending on how artistic you want to make your performance. I also needed to add an extra line into the reveille and spell the title correctly 😬

      @duncanfraserjazz 3 роки тому

      @@everydayshowday5151 You'll certainly notice a bigger sound with the regular monette range, so will help in getting a fatter sound. I don't know much about the lead piece options. I think one of the ones I test here (B4?) is the 3C "equivalent". Also, if you are returning to playing I would recommend getting plenty of long tones into your practice routine. I have found them more effective than any $300 mouthpiece in enhancing tone to be honest!

  • @penelopejoann
    @penelopejoann 3 роки тому

    I normally just put on my jazz records and try to play along. I sometimes try to set my metronome on top of a recording to challenge my sense of direction. A more structured practice routine for me gets boring, but I still can appreciate how scales can make me a better musician. There are still so many notes I likely have never truly heard/felt since I am a beginner, especially high notes and really low notes.

    • @duncanfraserjazz
      @duncanfraserjazz 3 роки тому

      Great, sticking on a record and playing along is a great way to practice! Who do you play along to and who is your favourite musician to play along to? I do it regularly, it's a great way to learn feel and even just getting used to improvising using just your ears to guide you. The scales in this routine make up a lot of common sounds you'll hear on the recordings you play along to, so maybe give a few of them a whirl to get the sound in your ears and listen out for them next time you are playing along with stuff.

    Good video! After years of contemplating the "which mouthpiece is best" conundrum, I have come to the conclusion that the room acoustics, and how I happen to be playing on a given day seems to influence the sound more than the mouthpiece. I know there are individuals who might swear by one particular mouthpiece that works best, but I'm always open to try something new and "wonderful"! Please tell me if you have a similar or different view. I think I would have to see a really big improvement in tone or ease of playing to pop for one of the high priced "miracle" mouthpieces. While I'm ranting, the thing I've noticed that makes the biggest bang for the buck is to clean the mouthpiece really well, and clean the trumpet too!

    • @duncanfraserjazz
      @duncanfraserjazz 3 роки тому

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. What are you playing on at the moment? For me, Equipment is always the last thing I look to change, the problem is usually me!! I try to be consistent and make a sound I like on whatever I'm playing, wherever. If I've exhausted all avenues then I'll look at equipment. I'm not big on chopping and changing all the time, I tend to go for something and stick with it for a long time. This video was done in Sept 2018 and I'm still using this Monette and the same horn (which I've had for 12 years now). Whilst I agree about the price of some of the high end equipment, I will say the difference in sound between what I was playing and this Monette was astronomical. You are also 100% right, a clean mouthpiece is the best thing, when we argue about differences that feel big to us, we are talking about size differences of 100ths of an inch sometimes, so cleaning the dirt off is often like a different mouthpiece!

      @@edstud1 ah cool, my other Horn is a Yamaha (8335LA). Can’t remember how open the 8310 is in comparison, but when I put my monette in the Yamaha it’s super open - ML bore open feeling horn + Mouthpiece with big hole in! I don’t particularly like the combination, but the Yamaha stays in the box 360 days a year tbh! If you can pick up a used B6 - it’s quite a popular size so shouldn’t be too tricky - then it might be worth a try. You’ve got to stick with the Monette gear a bit to get used to it though. Yes, I do teach online. Drop me an email if you want to schedule something or even just talk Trumpet!

I’m really enjoying them and find them very entertaining, you obviously put a lot of work into them and it shows. I can’t believe you haven’t got more subscribers but I’m sure that will come in time. @@Bazzerine lovely stuff. I miss getting out and gigging so much, I bet you’re feeling the same! Yeah the Trumpet is a beastly thing to play. It’s the addiction of possibly one day getting it right that keeps us coming back to it!! I think it was Dizzy Gillespie who said “Some days you get up and put the horn to your chops and it sounds pretty good and you win. Some days you try and nothing works and the horn wins. This goes on and on and then you die and the horn wins.” 😂 I hope you have a great Christmas, if you want to talk Trumpet ever then drop me an email, I’m always up for talking Trumpet.

    Duncan, wonder if you’ve tried Monette’s Traditional plus mouthpiece and your thoughts on it.

      Hi Dennis, No I haven’t. Not even seen one in the flesh - I don’t know how popular they are, most players I come across in London are either on Monette’s like my one or GR’s. But if the sound and ease of playing are similar to the STC range then they’d be well worth a go!

      Hi - yep 2 and a bit years later on I’m still using it 100% of the time and don’t even think about changing I love it. About to hit the studio and record on it in the next month. You might find it a little strange at first if it’s your first one but stick with it and it’ll be the best move you made. Once you’ve played the classic models you can get into the prana & resonance stuff. I’m not too fussed about them though as a) I am very happy with my current setup (still the same as this video) and b) they are quite difficult to get hold of to try in the U.K. Good luck, let me know how it goes and where to hear you on it 🎺

      GetM 02 this is a Yamaha. It’s the Custom LA model (8335LA), which is one of their pricier pro level horns. But the good thing about Yamaha is that even the cheapest models have similar looks and shapes and are all made in the same factory as the pro models, so they are always good quality. A good brand to start with if you were looking to buy one. I’d recommend checking out the 2335 model.

      The two in this video are 3M & 3 SV - I haven't played them for close to 7 or 8 years though. I went onto them to gradually reduce the rim size I was playing on (without having to keep buying a new mouthpiece), but then switched to GR. I even went down to a GR64 at one point when I was working in the West End. I've now gone completely the other way and play a big Monette B2S3 which I've been on for nearly 2 years and have no thoughts of switching from, I love it!
